Anna is a miniboss and the third player character to be fought in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. She attacks the party in No Man's Land shortly after Natalie has been kidnapped by Lance, mistaking Matt and NoLegs to be the latter's henchmen. After being defeated and informed of the true situation, she joins the party as they invade the Iron Fortress.
Appearance[]
Anna bears a striking resemblance to Anna, probably because they're literally the same person. She wears the Amber Bobble and the Ranger Skirt, and wields the Fairy Bow.
Overview[]
Befitting the penultimate "player boss" and the first one fought after Jotun, Anna is much tougher than NoLegs or Natalie. She mainly uses physical Bio skills, but she can also inflict Ice, Thunder and Water damage. Additionally, she knows some Wind spells that hit particularly hard thanks to her very high Magic Attack.
Most of Anna's attacks have a high chance of inflicting status effects and Magic Defence drops, with some of the former (namely Wet and Light) amplifying the damage of subsequent moves. In addition, she can summon a variety of weak enemies as backup - when pushed, she'll also call upon the Mighty Oak to deal severe physical Earth damage to both players.
Like all player bosses, Anna can be made to Surrender if certain conditions are met; in this case, she needs to be put at a significant disadvantage by lowering her HP and/or afflicting her with negative status effects. This can be made more difficult by the Air Strikes weather that will be active during the fight, as it will occasionally give Anna a Medipack that will cure her ailments and heal a good chunk of her HP. She can also heal herself after taking significant damage; fortunately, she can only do this once during the battle.
Anna is resistant to Bio, Earth, and Water and immune to Stun, Freeze, Chill, Doom, and Instant Death. On the other hand, she is weak to Wind and especially Fire, with the latter being further emphasized by her susceptibilities to Burn and Scorch. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, she reduces her Fire weakness, loses her Wind weakness, becomes quite resistant to Weaken, Tired, Curse, and Bad Luck, and gains a slight resistance to all stat debuffs except for HP.
Two Medals can be earned from Anna's battle. Forcing her to Surrender (on any difficulty) will award Child Minder, while defeating her (either conventionally or via Surrender) on Epic will award Firewood.

Battle Logic[]
The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.
Action
- If Surrender Score ≥4 → Surrender;
- Every 2nd turn;
- Limit Break → Mighty Oak;
- If playing on Hard/Epic → Hurricane (1/2), Razor Leaf (1/2);
- Otherwise → Whirlwind;
- <59% HP and hasn't eaten yet → Eat Pumpkin;
- Otherwise → Normal Attack (1/4), Piercing Shot (1/4);
- If playing on Hard/Epic and selected target is Wet → Frost Arrow (1/4), Spark Arrow (1/4);
- Otherwise → Aqua Arrow, (1/6), Frost Arrow (1/6), Spark Arrow (1/6).
* Anna's Limit Break becomes available every time she receives damage equal to 50% of her max HP.
Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)
- 50% → Normal Attack (1/2), Piercing Shot (1/2).
Surrender Score is calculated as such:
- Add 1 point for each of Burn, Poison, Wet, Weaken, Tired, Curse, Bad Luck, or Stagger.
- Add 1 point if Anna's HP is below 29%, 2 points if she's below 19%, 3 points if she's below 9%, or 4 points if she's below 4%.
Strategy[]
Anna is a serious challenge for the newly-diminished party, boasting a wide variety of elemental attacks with good chances of inflicting several painful status conditions such as Freeze or Stun. She gets even worse on harder difficulties; Whirlwind gets upgraded to Hurricane (which has higher power and is multi-target), she gains the option of using Razor Leaf, and she will forgo using Aqua Arrow on Wet targets in favor of getting a damage combo with Spark Arrow or Frost Arrow. Fortunately, she's also fairly predictable; she'll alternate between arrow attacks and nature magic unless she gets a Limit Break or decides to heal herself, and she can only do the latter once.
Anna's biggest weakness is Fire, which Matt can exploit with Magma/Eruption (especially if he's equipped with the Inferno). NoLegs lacks Fire skills, so he should use Wispy Strike/Tornado Tantrum to hit Anna's Wind weakness and potentially inflict Weaken to chip away at her offenses. On the defensive side of things, increasing Bio and Wind resistance will help deal with her most common attacks, Earth resistance is useful against the Mighty Oak Limit Break, and increasing resistance to Stun, Freeze, and Wet can neuter the effectiveness of her elemental arrows. High physical Defence will hamper most of her skills, but Magic Defence buffs can help blunt her Wind magic or counteract their debuffing effects. Bomb resistance can blunt incoming Air Strikes from the weather, but prioritize resisting Anna's status effects and elemental damage.
Surrender Strategy[]
In order to make Anna Surrender, the player needs to put 4 points on a hidden "Surrender Meter". It gains a point for every status ailment Anna's currently suffering from; relevant statuses include Burn, Poison, Wet, Weaken, Tired, Curse, Bad Luck, and Stagger. The Surrender Meter also gains points as Anna crosses certain HP thresholds; the checkpoints are at 29%, 19%, 9% and 4%.
While a combination of damage and status effects can make Anna Surrender, it's entirely possible to do so with nothing but the latter. A reliable combination would be throwing a Shuriken (Poison), using a Weapon-elemental attack with the Baby Penguin flair (Wet), casting the Dirt Boulder summon (Tired), and finishing with a Hand Bomb (Stagger). NoLegs can also add points with Bubbly Strike (Bad Luck), Wispy Strike (Weaken), and Shadow Strike (Curse), but their lower infliction chances makes them less reliable.
Be wary of the weather while you work on Anna's Surrender meter; if she gets a Medipack, she'll be cured of most status effects on top of getting a decent HP heal. On the other hand, Matt or NoLegs can benefit from the Medipacks as well, and the missiles and bombs can occasionally Stagger Anna, adding a point to her Surrender meter or increasing the power of your next attack (which can be helpful if you're trying to beat her conventionally or add points to her Surrender score by lowering her HP). If the Air Strikes are too annoying, NoLegs can temporarily clear the skies with The Creator Limit Break, also dealing a fair amount of damage to Anna and giving the players Good Luck to slightly boost their ailment infliction rates. If you explored the Freezeflame Dungeon earlier, you may also have the Fire Sprite summon; its Hot Ash exploits Anna's severe Burn weakness to chip at her for a while or add another point to her Surrender meter.
Quotes[]
- "STOP RIGHT THERE, CRIMINALS!! I can tell by your blonde hair - you’re with the dark-coats!" (Entering Battle)
- "This isn't fair. We're really innocent this time! We're the victims here!" (Matt's reply)
- "All of Lance’s henchmen have blonde hair - you should have tried harder to disguise yourself. The jig is up, and you’ll answer for your crimes!” (Second Attack)
- *You've got us all wrong, numbnuts* (NoLegs's translated reply)
- "You’ve even trained this innocent cat to be your lackey! Is there anything in the world that you won’t desecrate for your evil goals? And you, cat! You should be ashamed of yourself!" (Third Attack)
- "WE'RE NOT YOUR ENEMIES, YOU STUPID BRAT! We've got the same goals here! Try to chill out for a second." (Angry Matt)
- "If that's your way of begging for your life - it's not going to work. I'm prepared - I know that scumbags like you will say anything to trick people." (Fourth Attack)
- “WHAT IN THE SEVEN HELLS WAS THAT!?!? - Who are these guys!?” (When players use a Limit Break on her for the first time)
- “Ack, a few status effects won’t stop me. I’d have to be ALMOST DEAD and VERY BOGGED DOWN to surrender!” (Around 50% HP, with status ailments and/or debuffs)
- “I’m not stupid enough to fight alone. GET’EM, MIGHTY OAK!! SMASH THEIR HEADS IN!!” (Summoning Mighty Oak)
- “May the spirit of the earth punish you for the scars you've inflicted on her! This is gonna to hurt a lot!” (Summoning Mighty Oak again)
- “Can’t give up. Can’t give up. Can’t give up. Greenwood will be destroyed if I don’t win.” (Low HP)
- "I c-can't keep this up. I'm exhausted. I s-surrender... I SURRENDER! I'm gonna be sick..." (Self explanatory)
- "Oh, we did it. We've knocked her out. It's going to be a tad complicated convincing her that we come in peace. How did we end up in this situation?" (Matt after KO-ing Anna/0HP)
Trivia[]
- As with all of the player bosses, looking at Anna in the bestiary will show whatever equipment she currently has instead of what she wore during the fight.
- If Anna is fought during a "Randomized Equip Locations" Custom Game, she will appear with her default equipment set, no matter what she's actually carrying when she joins the party.
- Despite not wearing any equipment that gives an elemental weakness (in fact, the Amber Bobble resists Fire), Anna still is vulnerable to Fire and Wind.
- Unlike NoLegs and Natalie, the base stats of Anna's boss self (exemplary Magic Attack and average Evade and Attack) don't reflect her stats as a playable character.
