"Ahahaha! Who's dropped into my lair this time?
A group of feeble mortals?

LET'S PLAY A GAME TO DECIDE WHICH OF YOU MAY LIVE!!
"
―Annabelle, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Annabelle is an optional boss in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. She is found in the Temple of Trials, together with other Evil Players — as such, she is currently exclusive to the paid Steam release of the game.

Appearance

Annabelle is a demonic version of Anna, with red skin, black hair and black eyes with glowing red pupils. She wears a modified Spider Gown with a shortened skirt (giving it a slight resemblance to the Ranger Skirt), revealing her black boots and black-and-orange stockings. She also wears an orange version of the Curly Horns - which could be actual horns, considering her demonic origins - and wields a variant of the Black Widow bow with brown leather wrapped around its red segments.

Personality

Annabelle is a foul demon who seems to be a perverse manifestation of Anna's "hunter" side, seeking to not merely hunt targets but sadistically inflict pain on them. As such, she treats the party like her prey, and toys with them for her own amusement instead of for the sake of anything as simple as victory. Annabelle also seems to represent Anna's childish, somewhat naive qualities, given that she treats the battle as some sort of game. She is indifferent to the outcome of the battle, simply expressing a desire to go back to hell if defeated.

Annabelle's personality changes little after being captured; she looks forward to finding new targets to torture and kill, commenting that "The hunt never ends" and treating the whole arrangement as a "deal" she made with the party. However, she also reminds the party that she will eventually come to hunt them again, potentially foreshadowing some sort of revenge plot.

Overview

To do: insert overview here

As with other Evil Player battles, the players will be afflicted with a special unremovable status until the boss is defeated. Annabelle's is Brimstone (EBF5 Status Brimstone.png), which inverts all attempts to buff the party's stats; debuffs work normally. The exception to the rule is the Turtle Gi, which buffs the wearer depending on how hard he was hurt. All three Flybot summons also have no effect at all when used in this fight.

Annabelle's base offenses and defenses are slightly below-average, but her Accuracy and Evade are quite high. She primarily uses Dark and Wind-based physical attacks, along with a few Dark spells and a massive number of debuffs and status conditions. Contrary to what her flavor text implies, none of her arrow attacks are Bio-based; the text actually refers to the Poison that they can inflict upon the party. However, she does have a Bio skill which throws spiders at the party, hitting multiple times to inflict damage, Virus, and a Magic Defence debuff.

Befitting her demonic nature, Annabelle absorbs Fire, Bio, and Dark while being extremely weak to Holy. She has lesser weaknesses to Ice and Wind while being immune to Bomb and many status effects. Additionally, she is very resistant to all stat debuffs, especially regarding her Attack and Magic Attack. If "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, she gains resistances to Thunder and Earth while turning her Wind weakness into an absorption.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Bow Whack

  • 3rd turn, and every 2nd turn afterwards → Bow Whack;

* Bow Whack will always target the least damaged player.

Action

  • Limit Break;
    • <32% HP → Black Hole;
    • Otherwise → Annihilate;
  • If Summon Score ≥4 → Equip & Defend;
  • <39% HP → Arrow Rain (1/7), Combo Shot (1/7), Tentacles (1/7), Tempest (1/7), Unholy Ritual (1/7), Syphon (1/7), Throw Spiders (1/7);
  • <74% HP → Arrow Rain (1/5), Black Spikes (1/5), Tentacles (1/5), Tempest (1/5), Screamer (1/5);
  • Otherwise → Piercing Shot (1/3), Black Spikes (1/3), Screamer (1/3).

* Annabelle's Limit Break becomes available every time she receives damage equal to 35% of her max HP.

* Summon score increases by 1 if no other foes are left (checked at the start of Annabelle's turn), and resets to 0 after summoning.

Before the v2 update, summon score reset when it reached ≥7 even if she couldn't summon due to using her Limit Break, which could delay her re-summoning.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 66% → Bow Whack.

Strategies

Note that all Virus, Poison and Burn based strategies will not work, as Annabelle absorbs those elements.

Dark and Wind immunity are recommended, since those will outright nullify a lot of Annabelle's attacks (such as Screamer, Tempest or Hurricane). Her most dangerous attack is Tentacles, which can inflict massive physical damage, and cannot be resisted due to being non-elemental. It's generally a good idea to set up a Target tank with high Defence to protect your party from Annabelle's random and single target attacks.

Annabelle will use Annihilate as her first Limit Break and Black Hole as her second. As both only hit once, they can be blocked with Morale and Auto-Revive (though the Demon and Angel Mirror summons respectively can also be used to block their damage). Do keep in mind that if Annabelle uses her Bow Whack on the same turn as her Limit Break, she may Dispel the protective statuses off her target, leaving them defenseless against her ultimate attacks.

Try to inflict Weaken and Tired on the Zombie Hydra to keep it debuffed, which will allow you to focus your attention on Annabelle.

As for offence, Ice, Wind (not applicable when More Foe Resistance is on) and especially Holy are your best bets. NoLegs with the Honjo Masamune in particular can deal tremendous damage with proper setup.

Trivia

  • Like Anna, Annabelle's bangs will sway if the cursor is moved over them. Unlike Anna, her hair can only be swayed forwards.
  • Annabelle's dialogue upon being summoned may be a reference to making a pact with a demon, a common subject in English folklore. In this case, Annabelle gives the party her power in combat, but she warns them that she'll be back for them.
  • When Annabelle casts Annihilate, the kanji are mirrored.
  • In the Evil Players' beta designs (seen on his deviantART page), Matt Roszak gave Annabelle the regular version of the Spider Gown (with the floor-length skirt), and her eyes were more similar to Anna's, but with red irises instead of green.
