The Avenger has a long black blade with jagged grey edges and a thin opening near the base. It has a golden crossguard with two horizontal grooves and a pair of red points that attach to the base of the blade. Its hilt is wrapped in red leather, with a small silver pommel.
The Avenger is Matt's starting equipment, and is slightly less powerful but overall more reliable than the Gaia Axe. While the Gaia Axe has more power than the Avenger, the Avenger has no negative side effects to speak of. Both are useful enough for the early game, though Gaia Axe is more powerful against Jack.
Later in the game, the Avenger gives solid boosts to both offenses, as well as somewhat raising Accuracy, Evade and HP. It boosts the power of Revenge, and at later levels can counter with it. It also has an Unleash that buffs Matt's Attack, but due to the low potency of the ability there's little reason to not use Temper or even Beer instead.
If used in the late game, the Avenger is overall outclassed by Blizzard and if the player is feeling risky Soul Eater. The Avenger's only boost is for Revenge, which is a highly unorthodox skill to try to make use of given that it requires dead players for maximum power, and its offenses are lackluster in comparison to Blizzard. If the player seriously needs Stun resistance, they can use the Leather Hat instead.
The Avenger only resists Stun. This becomes an immunity at level 5.
Matt begins the game with the Avenger in his inventory.
