"Keep that thing away from me! Or all of us to be honest..."
―Natalie, Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Beholder is a recurring character in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. A grotesque mass of eyes, spikes, and tentacles with no respect for personal space, its role in the games has varied wildly over the course of the series, although it is usually either a boss or a summon (and sometimes both in the same game).

The Beholder is often found in barren environments, like deserts and lava fields.

Appearance[]

The Beholder's main body resembles an Eyeball, being a roughly spherical body with a large, bloodshot eye on the front and numerous jagged scales or spines along its sides and back. However, it also has a row of jagged teeth along its bottom and numerous large tentacles emerging from its back and underside. Some of the tentacles end in secondary eyeballs, and the others can generate barbs, burrow underground, or charge themselves with energy. All of the Beholder's eyes have a slit-like pupil flanked by two small dots, but its main eye also has two small projections on the sides of the pupil, making it resemble a cross.

Unlike the Eyeballs, the Beholder's colors have remained consistent throughout its appearances; a brown body with red spikes, yellow eyes with orange-brown pupils and veins, yellow-white teeth, and dull pink tentacles.

Overview[]

Epic Battle Fantasy[]

The Beholder made its debut in the series as the second boss of the game. Unlike its future appearances, it faces Matt and Natalie by itself, although it is preceded by two waves of Eyeballs.

The Beholder can fire sweeping lasers from its main eye to hit both players for magic damage, but the rest of its moves are single-target physical tentacle attacks. It can directly whack a player with an overhead swing or send barbed tentacles through the ground to stab them from below, but its strongest (and most infamous) attack is a prolonged close-range assault so horrifying that the victim is covered by a black box labelled "[CENSORED]" for its duration; afterwards, they'll suffer from mild Poison.

The Beholder has a severe Ice weakness and no resistances.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

Two Beholders are found in Volcano Peak as high-tier enemies, both appearing on the metal bridges crossing the lava river in the second half of the area. They are mainly accompanied by Eyeballs and Drill Bots in battle. The second Beholder encounter blocks the path to the Rock Runner minigame, and it respawns.

The Beholder has the same moves as in EBF1, but with some adjustments to their mechanics. Its Underground Tentacles and [CENSORED] attacks are partly Poison-elemental; the former has a slight Accuracy nerf, while the latter lost some power and gained a much stronger Poison status. Its Tentacle Whip and Laser remain non-elemental, but the former has a very high Stun chance and the latter can Dispel the party's buffs.

The Beholder is immune to Fire and Earth, but extremely weak to Thunder and especially Poison. It strongly resists Syphon, Stun, and Instant Death, but is highly susceptible to Berserk. It also has a hard cap on debuffs that prevent its stats from being lowered by more than 25%.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Beholder is an optional boss that can be found in the Lava Cave one screen below the Crystal Caverns' Slime Cat, on a small island of rock amid a sea of lava. The player will not be able to battle it until they acquire the Thermal Boots and the ability to walk on lava.

Unlike its previous boss appearance, the Beholder fights alongside a horde of Eyeballs; the party must slay a wave of Eyeballs before it will even join the fray, it is accompanied by four more of the smaller eye creatures when it arrives, and it passively summons another Eyeball every turn if there's room on its side. Its attacks are largely unchanged from its EBF3 appearance, but their status infliction rates have been increased (especially on higher difficulty levels), the elemental degree on its [CENSORED] attack has been reduced while its Poison status became stronger, and Underground Tentacles has gained a small Poison chance while becoming purely non-elemental and regaining normal Accuracy.

The Battle Mountain update gave the Beholder's moves a significant power boost to make it a more fearsome opponent. It also added a Medal, "Lo and Behold", for defeating it on Epic difficulty.

The Beholder is immune to Dark and Syphon while strongly resisting Stun, Freeze, Doom, Instant Death, and debuffs to its offenses and defences. However, it also has several elemental weaknesses: Thunder, Ice, Earth, and especially Water and Holy.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

While the Beholder was initially absent from EBF5, the v2 update brought it back as an optional boss in the Data Bunker. As the boss of the second EBF1 simulation, it acts similarly to its debut appearance in the series. However, its Underground Tentacles and [CENSORED] attack are slightly Earth and Bio-based, respectively, and the latter inflicts Poison comparable to its EBF3 version.

In order to emulate EBF1's battle mechanics, the Beholder has ridiculously high Accuracy, guaranteeing that its attacks will hit their targets; on the other hand, its literally nonexistent Evade ensures that it can't dodge anything the party throws at it in turn. It is also immune to most Status effects (including Invisible and Enchanted) and ignores Lovable.

As with its original appearance, the Beholder is incredibly vulnerable to Ice (although this weakness is halved with "More Foe Resistance" active) and has no elemental resistances. However, it is immune to all status effects besides Syphon, Dispel, Poison, and Virus; it is also moderately resistant to all stat debuffs except for HP.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy[]

  • Anything → Tentacle Whip (2/6), Underground Tentacles (2/6), Laser (1/6), [CENSORED] (1/6).

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

  • Berserked → Tentacle Whip;
  • Syphoned → Tentacle Whip (1/3), [CENSORED] (1/3), Underground Tentacles (1/3);
  • Otherwise → Tentacle Whip (1/4), [CENSORED] (1/4), Underground Tentacles (1/4), Laser (1/4).

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

  • Berserked or/and Syphoned → Tentacle Whip (1/3), [CENSORED] (1/3), Underground Tentacles (1/3);
  • Otherwise → Tentacle Whip (1/4), [CENSORED] (1/4), Underground Tentacles (1/4), Laser (1/4).

Additionally, the Beholder passively summons an Eyeball each turn.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Start of Turn:

  • Summon score ≥ 4 → Summons either an Eyeball or a Haunted Tree (these will be at the same level as the Beholder).

* Summon Score increases by 1 if no other foes are left (checked at the start of
the Beholder's turn), and resets to 0 after summoning foes.

Action

  • If Syphoned → Tentacle Whip (1/3), Underground Tentacles (1/3), [CENSORED] (1/3);
  • If Berserked → Laser;
  • Otherwise → Tentacle Whip (2/6), Underground Tentacles (2/6), [CENSORED] (1/6), Laser (1/6).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25% → Underground Tentacles.

Additionally, like all the Classic foes, the Beholder ignores the Lovable status on players.

Strategy[]

Epic Battle Fantasy[]

(to be added)

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

(to be expanded upon)

Despite using some Poison attacks, the Beholder has no resistance to it; in fact, Poison is its biggest elemental weakness. As such, stacking Poison on it can quickly rip through its HP, allowing the party to focus more on surviving its onslaught and taking out its backup. Its Thunder weakness also opens it up to heavy damage from Plasmacross, especially if Lance is using the Thunder Core.

Syphon will prevent the Beholder from using its Laser attack (although its 80% resistance will be hard to overcome), and Berserk will limit it to Tentacle Whip; if using the latter, make sure the party has high Defence and Stun resistance (preferably immunity) to withstand its boosted attacks.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

Equipment[]

Aside from a slight Poison element to its [CENSORED] attack and the ability to inflict Poison status with some attacks, the Beholder (and its Eyeball reinforcements) only use non-elemental attacks. As a result, elemental resistance does not play a huge part in this battle; however, it may be a good idea to increase the party's Stun, Poison and Dispel resistance.

Battle[]

After the player fights through an initial group of Eyeballs, the Beholder will emerge alongside several more Eyeballs. It will constantly summon Eyeballs every turn, and they assist the Beholder with some non-elemental damage. Maintaining strong Defence buffs is a great way to lower the Beholder's damage output, since most of its skills are physical. It is also vulnerable to Weaken, Tired, and Curse, which can significantly cripple it despite its high resistance to offensive and defensive debuffs; in particular, Tired can obliterate its Accuracy, and Curse increases its severe Holy weakness. The player can also inflict Wet on the Beholder to amplify its weaknesses to Thunder and Ice; as a bonus, most means of inflicting Wet will also hit the boss's serious Water weakness.

Keep in mind that the Beholder's Laser attack can Dispel the entire party at once, and the Dispel chance is heavily increased on Hard and Epic difficulties. Syphon and Berserk will prevent it from using its Laser; unfortunately, the Beholder is immune to the former, so the party will have to settle for the latter status (and thus endure its powered-up physical attacks).

It is worth noting that the Beholder is only 50% resistant to Stun, Freeze and Death, so Spark Arrow, Frost Arrow and Annihilate can render it helpless or kill it outright with relative ease. Also of note is that the Beholder has a 50% chance each of dropping a Lollipop or Candycane, two stat-boosting items.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Equipment[]

Once again, elemental resistance does not play a huge factor in this battle, as the Beholder's attacks are 25% elemental at best. Strategies involving Lovable will not be useful as the Beholder ignores this status. As a throwback to the original EBF, the Beholder has ridiculously high base Accuracy, meaning that Evade-based strategies are not recommended. However, due to its non-existent Evade, the player is free to use unwieldy weapons such as the Giant Slayer. The Beholder can inflict some heavy doses of Poison, but that is just from one attack; nevertheless, raising Poison resistance can render it a moot point, and Bio absorption (such as from Lance's Biohazard Blaster) will turn it to the party's advantage.

Battle[]

The Beholder fights alongside Eyeballs and Haunted Trees, and it can summon more if they go down. It still uses mainly physical attacks, so high Defence is important. It does have one magical attack: a laser which deals non-elemental damage. The Beholder's only elemental weakness is Ice, so the player can use Ice-boosting equipment to exploit this; unfortunately, its immunity to Wet and Chill prevents them from boosting Ice damage via statuses.

An unorthodox strategy would be to inflict Berserk on the Beholder, which causes it to spam its laser attack every turn; the player can exploit this by buffing their Magic Defence or giving the party Enchanted status. Conversely, inflicting Syphon on the Beholder restricts it to single-target physical attacks, potentially making it more manageable.

Virus Strategy (IN-PROGRESS)[]

Another unorthodox option to beat the Beholder is to exploit its lack of resistance to Poison and Virus. A Virus-focused party can inflict a lot of passive damage while healing off of the spreading status and [CENSORED]-inflicted Poison.

CharIcon Natalie Natalie
EBF5 WepIcon Beholding Eye EBF5 Hat Robot Ears EBF5 Hat Blue Elephant EBF5 Arm Mecha Suit EBF5 Arm Ranger Skirt

Natalie will be doing most of the healing and support for this strategy; while more buff-boosting gear would be useful in this regard, the primary aim of this build is to let her heal off of Poison and Virus. The Robot Ears and Mecha Suit are useful for their high Defence (and their Thunder weaknesses are a non-issue against the Beholder), but the Ranger Skirt can be useful if you plan on capturing the Beholder. The Camo Skirt also has strong Bio resistance, as well as a Medipack auto-skill that can ease Natalie's healing duties; however, Medipack will also cure Virus from the recipient, which may be suboptimal.

In terms of Flairs, the Juicy Beast is probably the best option for topping off Natalie's Bio resistance; the others either make it harder for Poison and Virus to affect her or change the on-hit status of her weapon-elemental attacks to something other than Virus. The Juicy Beast also provides some SP regeneration, which can be helpful for emergency summons. The Tr*force should be considered as well; its auto-Morale can help Natalie's odds of survival, and its passive Limit regeneration could let her fire off 7th Heaven for added insurance.

Natalie should also carry Heal More and Revive to supplement the party's survival, especially since she can't learn Protect to increase their Defence.

CharIcon Lance Lance
EBF5 WepIcon Biohazard Blaster EBF5 Hat Pumpkin Head EBF5 Hat Knight's Helmet EBF5 Arm Explorer's Jacket EBF5 Arm Heroic Armor

With the Biohazard Blaster alone providing enough Bio resistance to let Lance absorb Poison and Virus damage (including its self-inflicted Poison), Bio-resistant hats and armor aren't as important for Lance as they are for Natalie; however, they can be used to further increase the healing Lance receives. Otherwise, the Knight's Helmet and Heroic Armor can be used for their massive defences, since their elemental weaknesses and Evade penalty are rendered moot for this battle. The Space Ace is another armor option, but the Space Helmet should be avoided - its Virus immunity will prevent Lance from being infected (and thus healing off of the status).

Summon[]

All instances of the Beholder summon will also cure Freeze from all players by forcing them to jump off the screen.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2.[]

The Beholder is one of Natalie's Summons in this game, with two versions. In the first one, the Beholder fires its eye laser at the foes, in the second one, the Beholder instead uses its [CENSORED] attack on a single foe. The latter is less common, as it's only 1/7 (≈14%) chance. As with all Summons, it uses Natalie's base Magic Attack, thus ignoring any buffs and debuffs to the stat, and also ignores her Accuracy.

Trivia[]

  • The Beholder seems to be based on the enemy of the same name in Dungeons & Dragons.
  • The Eyeball enemy seems to be somewhat related to the Beholder, given that their appearance is very similar. It can be speculated that the Eyeball might be a juvenile form of the Beholder.
    • Eyeballs and the Beholder also both resemble The Devourer, though it is unclear what connection there is between them.
  • The Beholder is the first creature/character in the Epic Battle Fantasy series to have been both a summon and an enemy, along with the Slime Bunny.
  • The Beholder's [CENSORED] attack is a parody of Japanese hentai anime and manga, wherein girls are often sexually assaulted by tentacled monsters. Fitting the theme, Natalie will say "Ewwww. Hope I don't get pregnant from that..." when she is hit by said attack for the first time in EBF3.
    • In EBF4, Natalie says "Ewwwwwwwwww. I hope I don't get pregnant from that again. ;_;" when she gets hit by the Beholder's [CENSORED] attack. Although intended to be a reference to her comment upon being hit by said attack in the previous game (i.e. "I didn't get pregnant from the last time it did this, and I hope my luck holds out this time, too!"), many fans interpreted her comment to imply that she may had previously become pregnant from the attack.
    • When fought in EBF4, depending on who's at the front, either Matt or Lance will say, "I've seen enough hentai to know where this is going!"
    • In this flash file showing off the Beholder's animation scripts on Matt Roszak's DeviantArt page, the [CENSORED] attack is unabashedly referred to as "rape."
  • So far, Epic Battle Fantasy 3 is the only game in the series to feature Beholders as an entire species rather than a single unique entity.
  • The only game to not feature the Beholder in any way is the pre-v2 version of Epic Battle Fantasy 5; the v2 update allows it to be fought as part of the EBF1 Data Bunker simulations and the 2-Player Classic Boss Rush.
    • Depending on your interpretation of the implications of The Devourer, this may technically not be the case.
    • As of EBF5's v2 update, EBF2 is the only game in the main EBF series without the option of fighting a Beholder. Conversely, EBF and EBF3 are the only main games without a Beholder summon.
  • In Epic Battle Fantasy 5, it costs 69 SP to summon a captured Beholder; this may be intentional, as the Beholder is arguably the most overtly suggestive foe in the game. On the other hand, this may simply have been judged as the appropriate SP cost for the Beholder summon's abilities.
