The Black Wasp, also known as Dark Moth and Spikey Moth, is a recurring foe in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. It appears primarily in Volcano Peak (in Epic Battle Fantasy 3), Ashwood Forest, and Lankyroot Jungle (in Epic Battle Fantasy 4); in EBF5, it appears in the Data Bunker and is also available as a summon.

Appearance[]

The Black Wasp is a large, monstrous insect of indeterminate species or origin, vaguely resembling a cross between a wasp and a butterfly. As its name suggests, it is primarily black in color, with a subtly mottled/speckled appearance on its head and thorax. Its head has a pair of long, thin antennae with tiny clubs on the end, five round red eyes, and a row of light grey fangs along the bottom. It has three pairs of grey legs, with the front pair ending in spear-like points while the others end in smaller hooked claws. Its wings are particularly unusual, appearing to consist of multiple black "feathers" or membranes mounted on long, almost bow-like grey bases. Its abdomen is pure black, tipped with a stinger-like point, and covered with grey spikes of various sizes.

Overview[]

The Black Wasp is considerably stronger than other Wasp variants; as such, it tends to appear as a late game foe even after having first appeared much earlier on. It has a fairly strong physical attack that can Poison the victim, as well as a Supersonic Wave that can lower their Defence; the latter is usually (but not always) a magical Wind attack. As a flying foe, it also has above-average Evade, although not to an overwhelming degree in most cases.

Fortunately, like all Giant Insects, the Black Wasp has several weaknesses that make it easy to dispose of. Its most common weaknesses tend to be Fire, Thunder, and Wind, and status effects like Syphon and Berserk can stop it from using Supersonic Wave.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2[]

The Spikey Moth is encountered three times in Epic Battle Fantasy 2. A pair of them are fought alongside a Red Bee in Wave 7, a lone specimen backs up a Red Bee and a Rock Eater in Wave 14, and an especially powerful individual attacks in Wave 18, backed by two Spirits.

The Spikey Moth is similar to the Red Bee, using the same Flip (a straightforward non-elemental physical move) and Supersonic Wave (deals light magical Wind damage and has a high chance of debuffing Defence, but can be prevented via Seal). However, it replaces Toxic Powder with Barrage, a fierce three-hit assault that deals noticeable non-elemental physical damage while having a slight chance to Poison the victim. This move has slightly below-average Accuracy, making Blind an option to reduce its threat.

The Spikey Moth strongly resists Earth and Poison attacks, can only be debuffed to -40% in any stat, and is completely immune to the Poison status effect. On the other hand, it's very weak to Fire, Thunder, and Wind; Ice is another option, although it's a much less pronounced weakness, However, this gives Matt another incentive to use the Blizzard against the foe; he can do extra damage with a boosted Iceberg or try to stun the Spikey Moth with Unleash.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

The Dark Moth can attack the party with one of two non-elemental physical moves; Flip is nothing special, but Barrage is twice as strong, hits three times, and has a low chance to Poison the victim. It can also launch a Supersonic Wave to inflict mild magical Wind damage while halving the target's Defence; the latter can be a serious issue, especially if more powerful physically-inclined foes are present. Fortunately, Supersonic Wave can be disabled entirely by inflicting Syphon or Berserk; the latter status also disables Barrage, leaving the Dark Moth largely impotent despite the power boost to its Flip attack.

The Dark Moth has high Evade, but no resistances aside from an immunity to Earth and Dark. Its elemental weaknesses include (in ascending order of severity) Wind, Thunder, Fire, and Holy, giving the party no shortage of options for killing it.

For farming purposes, the Dark Moth is one of the best sources of Red Potions, having the best drop rate alongside the Giant Red Slime. It's also the party's best source of Purple Potions; the Giant Squid has a better drop rate, but it can only be fought one time.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

With low HP and slightly above-average Evade, the Black Wasp specializes in wearing down the party from multiple fronts as the battle goes on. It uses slightly Bio-based physical attacks to deal direct damage and potentially inflict mild Poison; Barrage is significantly stronger than Flip in both damage and Poison chance. Its Supersonic Wave doesn't inflict damage, but it will slightly lower the entire party's defenses while having a high chance to call a Red Wasp if there's room on the enemy side. On higher difficulty levels, Supersonic Wave has an additional chance to summon another Black Wasp, potentially adding two new foes to the battle if the player is unlucky.

While not especially dangerous on its own, the Black Wasp can send a manageable fight spiraling out of control if left unchecked (especially when paired with other Giant Insects that have their own forms of disruption). Fortunately, it's crippled by Syphon or Berserk, either of which limits it to its basic Flip attack. Even without those status effects, its debuffs and Poison infliction can be managed with periodic use of Protect, Barrier, and status-clearing options; they're all very weak as well, so the player can usually afford to ignore them unless there's other foes stacking the same in a single turn.

The Black Wasp resists Earth while being immune to Bio, Poison, and Dark; on the other hand, it's weak to Wind, Thunder, Fire, and Holy. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, it becomes neutral to Fire and Thunder while gaining an additional resistance to Stun.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

As noted by its Bestiary entry, the Spikey Moth is the more offensive, less dodgy counterpart of the Red Bee. Its Evade is significantly lower (but still high compared to the average foe) and it has no way to debuff Accuracy, so it's a lot easier to hit; on the other hand, it has more HP and stronger physical attacks, including one that hits three times and has a modest chance to Poison the victim with each hit. Its sole magic attack, the Wind-based Supersonic Wave, is its weakest skill, but it can also debuff Defence and potentially summon new foes. On higher difficulty levels, the foe gains better infliction chances on Barrage and Supersonic Wave; the latter also inflicts a stronger Defence debuff.

Syphon and Berserk reduce the Spikey Moth's annoyance level by stopping it from using Supersonic Wave; bear in mind that Berserk will make it spam a powered-up Barrage, however. If these statuses cannot be inflicted, don't rely on Protect and other Defence-buffing options to counteract its debuffs; instead, try debuffing its Attack, Stunning it, or straight-up killing it before it can exploit the party's vulnerability.

As a Classic foe, the Spikey Moth ignores Lovable and can't be afflicted with Invisible or Enchanted; it also has a modest resistance to all debuffs except for HP. It resists Earth and Bio while being immune to all status effects aside from Stun, Poison, Virus, Syphon, Dispel, Doom, and Instant Death. On the other hand, it has a small weakness to Thunder and Ice, a moderate weakness to Fire and Holy, and an extreme weakness to Wind. "More Foe Resistance" removes its weaknesses to Fire, Thunder, and Ice, greatly reduces its Wind weakness, and allows it to absorb both Bio and Dark.

Like all the Classic foes, the Spikey Moth ignores the Lovable status on players.

Summon[]

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Spikey Moth can be captured and used as a summon. It uses a modified version of Supersonic Wave on a single foe, massively reducing their Attack. Although the BOSH summon is more efficient for entire enemy waves, the Spikey Moth summon is a cheaper alternative for debilitating a single physically-inclined target (especially when paired with Weaken support).

Trivia[]

  • The Black Wasp has the longest antennae of any Giant Insect. It's also the only member of the family to never be called a "Bee", retaining its designation as a "Moth" in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 before becoming a "Wasp" like the rest of its family in Epic Battle Fantasy 4.
