The Book Worm is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 introduced in the v2 update. It is found in the Greenwood Library.

Appearance[]

The Book Worm is a caterpillar-like creature with a white underbelly and face, an orange back with red spots and small orange projections, large red eyes, and two long orange feelers with yellow tips. It also wears a pair of glasses, despite having no visible means of keeping them on its face. It has three variants based on the design of its mouth:

  1. A triangular frown.
  2. A cat-like smile.
  3. A perfectly straight mouth with a single, square-shaped white tooth protruding from the lower lip.

Overview[]

The Book Worm uses single-target non-elemental attacks; one has a good chance of Confuse and another has fairly impressive power. However, it's most notable for its ability to inflict Enchanted on players, making them more vulnerable to physical damage and immune to magical damage. It can also Enchant itself by curling up, making magic attacks a bit less reliable against it. All of its moves have a small chance to summon other Worms; this is usually another Book Worm, but any species besides the Scaly Worm may appear instead.

On Hard and Epic difficulty, the Book Worm's Sting inflicts two stacks of Confuse instead of one, and its Bite attack gains a small chance to inflict a few stacks of Virus. It also spawns with Defend status, which it can renew by using Curl Up (in addition to Enchantment), but its low HP makes this relatively minor against buffed players or attacks aimed at its weaknesses. Its chance of summoning backup increases significantly, potentially allowing it to swarm the party.

While generally weak, the Book Worm's status effects can be annoying; Enchantment also enables it to deal surprising amounts of damage with Paper Blade. Its self-Enchanting abilities can be exploited with physical attacks, especially ones that exploit its elemental weaknesses; on higher difficulties, Giga Drill can also exploit its Defend buff along with Enchanted. It also suffers from a horrible Freeze weakness that can be exploited by most sources of the status; in particular, NoLegs can lock down an entire group of Book Worms with a single Swift Slash from the Book of Spells. Poison and Virus exploit its most severe weakness, but remember that their damage can be negated by Enchanted.

The Book Worm is weak to Earth, Ice and especially Bio. It's also massively vulnerable to Chill, Freeze, Poison, and Virus. Activating "More Foe Resistance" removes its weaknesses to Ice, Chill, and Freeze while adding a Water absorption and an immunity to Dispel.
