"Awesome, looks like dinner has arrived! (The bears might be thinking the same thing, though.)"
―Matt's first encounter with a Brown Bear, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Brown Bear is a foe in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5, and a summon in the latter. In EBF4, it mostly appears in Ashwood Forest, while in EBF5, it tends to appear in the Mystic Woods and the Frozen Valley. In the latter game's Foe Remix Custom Game, it makes its first appearance in the Wild Tropics, replacing the Leafy Chomper.

Appearance[]

The Brown Bear resembles a real-life grizzly bear, being a hulking quadrupedal mammal with rough brown fur, a tan snout and several beige claws on each paw. It has a small brown circle for a tail, and has two small rounded ears.

In EBF4, the Brown Bear has two blunt claws on each paw, no visible mouth at rest, and large white eyes set in a permanent angry glare. In EBF5, it has three sharp claws per paw, a visible mouth, beady brown eyes, and a neutral expression unless angered.

Overview[]

The Brown Bear is an elite foe that combines solid health with sheer non-elemental power. It focuses primarily on pure damage to single targets, although it has a decent chance to inflict Stun with one attack. While it is fairly easy to wear down (especially with below-average Evade), it will use much stronger moves as its HP falls. Like most Bears, the Brown Bear will go Berserk when it takes a serious blow, making it much more powerful (especially on higher difficulties, when it also buffs its Attack). While this can be negated with Ice or Water attacks, the Brown Bear resists both elements.

Brown Bears consistently halve Ice, Wind and Water damage, also having great resistances to Freeze, Doom, and Instant Death. On the other hand, they're weak to Fire and Bio, but be careful not to Enrage them before you're prepared for the following rampage.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

Aside from the Stun chance on its Body Slam attack, the Brown Bear is a very straightforward foe. It exclusively uses single-target non-elemental physical attacks, swapping out Maul for a much stronger multi-hit attack once reduced to less than 49% of its HP. Use your strong attacks wisely; if it loses more than 20% of its maximum HP in a single blow, the Brown Bear will automatically give itself Berserk (and a good Attack buff on Hard or Epic difficulty) to make it hit much harder.

There are three ways to deal with the Brown Bear's Enraged state; kill it as quickly as possible, use weak attacks and damaging status effects to avoid hitting its Enrage threshold, or use an Ice or Water attack to calm it down. In the latter case, Cloudburst is probably the best option; despite not doing actual damage, it still clears Berserk and applies Wet for the party to exploit (probably via Thunder skills, since the Brown Bear doesn't resist that element).

The Brown Bear is resistant to Ice, Wind and Water, but extremely weak to Fire and Poison. It's also very resistant to Stun, Freeze, Doom, and Instant Death. It is also somewhat notable for its chance to drop Ham, albeit at the comically low rate of 2%.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Brown Bear is a bulky offensive powerhouse with a simple but effective strategy; beat the snot out of the players with strong non-elemental physical attacks. Most of its moves are single-target and lack additional effects, but it can occasionally Stun the victim of its Body Slam. After losing about half of its HP, it upgrades its basic claw strike with a frenzied six-hit assault; it can also use a rather distressing Earth-based move that hits several times. Fortunately, it only uses the latter move once per battle, and it can be disabled entirely by turning off "Mature" content in the Options menu.

The Brown Bear will focus its attacks on whoever attacked it last, which can be exploited to keep its attention on physically bulky characters even without Target. It will also go Berserk if it loses more than 25% of its HP to a single blow, giving its attacks significantly more punch. In this state, it gains a rolling attack that hits the entire front line before smashing the backup players for even more damage; however, it only uses this move on the turn it became Enraged (unless its Surrender conditions are met while Berserk).

If Enrage is triggered, you should quickly finish off the Brown Bear or remove its Berserk status with a Water or Ice attack. The issue can be avoided altogether by using attacks that don't pass Enrage's damage threshold; status effects like Poison and Burn can help in this regard. Alternatively, skills like Spark Arrow, Plasma Cage, or the Slime Mouse summon can exploit the Brown Bear's lack of Stun resistance, leaving it completely open for the party's biggest damage combos.

On Hard and Epic difficulty, the Brown Bear's Enrage threshold is reduced (>20% of its HP instead of 25%), and it gets a good Attack buff on top of the Berserk status. Its Dump attack also gains a small chance to inflict Virus; while it's only one stack, the nature of Virus means that you should be ready to cure it in a prolonged battle. On the other hand, Virus can help accelerate the Brown Bear's demise if it spreads back to it.

The Brown Bear resists Ice, Wind and Water while being weak to Fire and especially Bio. It's also highly resistant to Chill, Freeze, Doom, and Instant Death, as well as being somewhat resistant to Attack and Defence debuffs; on the other hand, it's incredibly easy to Stagger. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, it loses its Fire weakness, becomes completely immune to Doom and Instant Death, and gains resistances to Earth, Holy, Dark, and debuffs to Magic Attack and Magic Defence.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

  • ≥49% HP → Maul (1/3), Bite (1/3), Body Slam (1/3);
  • <49% HP → Bite (1/3), Body Slam (1/3), Frenzied Barrage (1/3).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Action

  • If catch score >55, all players are Lovable, and the Bear is not Berserked → Surrender;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Roll;
  • If Enrage was triggered this turn → Roll;
  • <49% HP or Berserked → 6x Hit (1/3);
    • If Dump was already used or if Mature is turned off → Body Slam (2/3);
    • Otherwise → Body Slam (1/3), Dump (1/3);
  • Otherwise → Maul (1/3), Bite (1/3), Body Slam (1/3).

The Bear will target the last player who attacked them with their attacks.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% → Maul (1/2), 6x Hit (1/2).

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Beasts, the Brown Bear will inflict 1x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their action).

Summon[]

In EBF5, the Brown Bear can be captured and used as a summon; the Viking Fur can also summon it between turns. When called, it uses its 6x Hit to strike a single foe, inflicting non-elemental physical damage. Uniquely among summons (and similar to the Revenge skill), its damage increases depending on the party's condition; if the summoner is at critical HP and their allies are dead, it can become almost ten times stronger than normal.

Note: Power gain is same as Revenge's: (100 - Summoner's remaining HP % rounded down) ^ 1.3, up to ≈398 at <1% HP, plus 150 power for every dead player, including backup ones, up to ≈998 power in total; unlike Revenge, if the end result is <100, it becomes 100 instead. This gives the Brown Bear summon a minimum power of 100 and a maximum of 998.
