The Chainsaw Gun - known simply as the Chainsaw in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 - is a non-elemental gun available for Lance in Epic Battle Fantasy 3, 4 and 5.
Description[]
The Chainsaw Gun is a massive machine gun made purely out of copper and stainless steel. Its buttstock is decorated with hazard stripes, and it has two glowing yellow lights: one at the buttstock, and the other at the gun's chamber. Its main feature is a massive chainsaw blade running along the gun's entire length, functioning as a bayonet during close-quarters combat.
In EBF5, the Chainsaw Gun had a slight redesign (notably losing the lights on its body) and gained a matching revolver, mostly black and grey with a hazard stripe on its frame under the barrel.
In all of its appearances, the Chainsaw Gun's main asset is its colossal Attack stat. It is invariably one of the strongest physical guns at Lance's disposal, if not the strongest - however, this typically comes at the cost of a dreadful Magic Attack stat and occasional defensive penalties. Its Equipment Effects vary between games, but typically include a low chance to inflict Instant Death via its on-hit status effect and/or skills from the Sawblade tree.
Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]
As its in-game description notes, the Chainsaw has an unparalleled Attack stat (almost 1.5 times higher than the Deep Blue), literally doubling Lance's physical damage output; it also boosts his Accuracy slightly while weakening his Magic Attack and Magic Defence. Its Unleash has a chance to instantly kill the target, and it gains the ability to counter attacks with Lance's Normal Attack at Level 5; while this can't inflict Death on foes, it'll still deal immense damage.
Although the Chainsaw gives Lance some impressive physical damage output, he lacks high-powered physical skills to really take advantage of it. Furthermore, the gun has no resistances and two status vulnerabilities that can easily shut Lance down; as a result, it's usually better to give him a magic-focused gun like the Steel Shark or the Shadow Blaster while letting Matt handle the physical offense. To add insult to injury, the Chainsaw's even outclassed in a physical build; thanks to the weird Berserk mechanics in EBF3, the Deep Blue gets boosts to its Normal Attack and its Flood unleash, giving it impressive damage output against Water-weak foes.
The Chainsaw has serious weaknesses to Syphon and Stun, which remain constant at all forging levels.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]
The Chainsaw Gun has pitiful Magic Attack, a pinch of Evade, and immense Attack. It's nowhere near as powerful as The Phantom in the latter regard, but it also lacks defensive penalties and doesn't require any progress into Battle Mountain to obtain; unfortunately, it's still hampered by Lance's dearth of strong physical skills.
Aside from devastating physical damage, the Chainsaw Gun has numerous ways to apply Instant Death; its weapon-elemental attacks (including its Normal Attack counter), its Sawblade unleash, and the Triple Sawblades it can randomly cast between turns. While the Death chance isn't especially high on any of these options, Lance can repeatedly threaten foes with the status on pretty much every turn, also inflicting a good amount of non-elemental damage. However, The Departed is a better option for inflicting Death on a whole wave (albeit with a few turns' delay), since Arrow Rain is more consistent than Hyper Beam.
The Chainsaw Gun is resistant to Doom and Instant Death, becoming fully immune to both at Level 5.
Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]
Normal[]
The Chainsaw Gun has the single highest Attack stat among guns, along with small increases to Evade and a nominal Magic Attack stat. It improves the damage of non-elemental skills and ignores defensive buffs on enemies it hits. It can also unleash Sawblade and scare plant-based foes.
While Sawblade has an Instant Death chance, it's too low to be reliable; the Super Snipe ZX and the Spine Snapper are better for Instant Death exploitation, to say nothing of an appropriately-equipped Anna. The ability to ignore defensive buffs can help Lance score some hits while his allies work elsewhere, but it's usually better to just Dispel the buffs with Armor Crush if it's available. Additionally, guns like the Heavy Claw or the Deep Blue can match or even exceed the Chainsaw Gun's physical damage output with their elemental skills and the appropriate status support from the party.
Overall, while the Chainsaw Gun has plenty of raw power, physical Lance builds tend to prefer the Heavy Claw for its synergy with Machine Guns and Big Bullet.
The Chainsaw Gun resists Bomb, Stagger, Confuse, Doom, and Instant Death, becoming immune to all but the first at Level 5.
Equip Remix[]
If you thought a giant gun with a built-in chainsaw couldn't be any more terrifying, you haven't played Equip Remix. The Alt Chainsaw Gun gives Lance up to 200% more Attack (and a little bit of Accuracy and Evade), letting him inflict catastrophic damage with his physical skills. It also intimidates plant-based foes, boosts non-elemental skills, and counters attacks with Armor Crush. Its weapon-elemental skills have a good chance to unleash Sawblade, giving Lance some extra damage output and a negligible chance of Instant Death infliction.
The Alt Chainsaw Gun is the strongest physical option in Lance's arsenal, with its physical skills doing more damage than guns with the appropriate elemental boosts. Unfortunately, its awesome Attack comes at the cost of halved defenses, so Lance will need support from his allies and other equipment to keep him going. If the player wants a less extreme physical gun, the Alt Super Snipe ZX's Attack power is nothing to sneeze at, while the Alt Desert Scorpion can deal impressive Earth damage with its Cataclysm unleash.
The Alt Chainsaw Gun resists Bomb, Stagger, and Confuse, becoming immune to the latter two at Level 5.
Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]
The Chainsaw can be bought from the Equipment Shop for 14,000 gold.
