"A mysterious artifact said to have fallen from the sky."
―In-game description, Epic Battle Fantasy 4&5

The Dark Rune is a recurring crafting item in the Epic Battle Fantasy series, introduced in Epic Battle Fantasy 3. It is a rectangular black rock covered with intricate red patterns similar to a Cosmic Monolith. It is used for forging mostly Dark-related equipment to their last two levels.

In EBF3, the Dark Rune can be bought in The Town for 18,000 gold once it has been found elsewhere (such as inside a chest or as a drop from a foe). Aside from being a crafting material (with 29 being needed for the relevant upgrades), it can also be used to cast Doomsday in battle; the player will receive the "Doomsday" medal for the latter.

In EBF4, Dark Runes can be bought from the Material Shop in Goldenbrick Resort for 20,000 gold apiece. To upgrade everything, 24 are required.

In EBF5, the Dark Rune had a visual update; notably, it faces in the opposite direction as its EBF3 and 4 sprite, and its red markings were made much brighter. It can be purchased from the Material Shops in The Great Sea and Redpine Town for 20,000 gold, and 56 are necessary to fully upgrade the relevant equipment.

Drop Rate[]

Dark Runes are dropped by mostly Dark-based foes, with the Cosmic Monolith usually being a reliable source of them.

Additionally, smashing a red crystal with The Big Hammer has a 5% chance to drop a Dark Rune.

Trivia[]

  • The Dark Rune may be a piece of a Cosmic Monolith or technology similar to it, going by its appearance, Dark affinity, high chance of dropping from Cosmic Monoliths, and item description in EBF4 and 5. This is further implied in EBF5, where it can also drop from robotic foes with aesthetic similarities to the Cosmic Monolith, such as the Neon Valkyrie, the Red Flybot, and the Prototype 9X.
