The Dead Pixel is a foe that appears in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is fought in the Hope Harbor Glitch Area outside of the Grand Gallery; in Foe Remix, one appears in the Wild Tropics.

Appearance[]

The Dead Pixel's appearance is similar to the Bone Bat (complete with the same visual variants), but more pixelated. Like other Pixels, it appears as a static image that slightly floats back and forth on the battlefield; vibrating or flashing when struck or attacking.

Overview[]

As with its fellow Pixels, the Dead Pixel is much more dangerous than the foe it appears to be; compared to the Bone Bat, it has slightly more Evade, doubled offensive stats, and almost three times as much HP. Its single-target options include a part-Wind physical attack and a slightly weaker part-Dark magic attack with very high Accuracy. It also has a physical attack that hits three random targets, dealing pure Dark damage with a decent chance to inflict Bad Luck.

On Hard or Epic difficulty, the Dead Pixel's Bad Luck Tackle has a doubled status chance. Its Dark Strike gains a similarly high chance to inflict Shroud, although it can mitigate the status if it hits the affected player with its Wind Strike.

While quite a bit stronger than it looks, the Dead Pixel still has several exploitable weaknesses. It's vulnerable to most elements and status effects, including Stun; this allows the party to keep it immobilized with multi-target weapon-elemental skills like Slicing Cyclone off of the Lightning Shard or Swift Slash off of the Neon Lightbulb. Its offenses and Evade can be easily worn down by Weaken and Tired, respectively, and it has no resistance to Syphon or Berserk, either of which stops its status shenanigans. High-Accuracy skills and gear can be helpful against it; not only is its base Evade on the high side, it often appears with a level advantage on the party.

Aside from its immunity to Doom and Instant Death, the Dead Pixel has similar resistances to the Bone Bat; it absorbs Dark, is immune to Earth, is very weak to Wind and Holy, and has vulnerabilities to Stun and especially Weaken and Tired. With "More Foe Resistance" active, it absorbs Wind and Bio while becoming very resistant to all types of stat debuff apart from HP.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If catchscore >55 and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Wind Strike;
  • Otherwise → Bad Luck Tackle (1/3), Wind Strike (1/3), Dark Strike (1/3).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 50% → Wind Strike.

Summon[]

The Dead Pixel can be captured and used as a summon. It uses Dark Strike to hit one foe with weak magical Dark damage and five stacks of Bad Luck. Despite its low power, its on-hit Bad Luck can be used to facilitate evasion, capturing or status strategies, particularly if the party has a reliable source of Doom to follow up with.

Trivia[]

  • At first glance, the Dead Pixel appears to be the only Pixel to lack a color in its name. However, its name is a reference to an electronic display error where an individual pixel on a screen fails to change color as normal (usually due to a power connection problem), and remains as a black spot on the display. Essentially, "Dead Pixel" is a fancy alternative way to say "Black Pixel" while simultaneously referencing the undead appearance of the foe's inspiration and giving a nod to the developer's studies in Computing Science.
