- The weapon's name may be a reference to the anime Soul Eater, in which gifted humans called "maestors" fight Witches and demon-like creatures called Kishin with Scythes, humans that can take the forms of Weapons. The Maestors' ultimate goal is to collected 99 Kishin souls and one Witch's soul to prove their worth, granting their Scythes massive power and the title "Death Scythe".
- Alternately, the Death Scythe could be a reference to the Grim Reaper, a popular image of death.
