The Green Bush is a recurring foe in the Epic Battle Fantasy series, having appeared in Epic Battle Fantasy 3, 4 and 5 and Adventure Story. It is also a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It appears mostly in nature/forest-themed areas, such as Vegetable Forest (EBF3), Lankyroot Jungle, the unburned portions of Ashwood Forest (EBF4), and the Wild Tropics (EBF5).

Appearance[]

The Green Bush is a small plant creature covered in bright green leaves. Like all Bushes, it has a rounded body with two long arms and no visible feet. Its face consists of two beady green eyes and a toothy mouth that only appears in certain attack animations. It also has a small branch protruding out of its head, dotted with a large leaf or two and sometimes accompanied by a colorful flower or additional branches.

Overview[]

The Green Bush is a very weak foe in all of its appearances. It mostly uses single-target physical attacks - usually non-elemental or Bio-based, sometimes with a small Poison chance - and a scream that can lower the party's stats; while it can make players an easier target for more dangerous foes, its low HP and numerous weaknesses make it unlikely to survive a turn.

The Green Bush absorbs Water and is seriously vulnerable to Fire, with Earth, Bio, and Wind being common additional weaknesses. It lacks any other resistances unless the "More Foe Resistance" challenge is enabled.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

The Green Bush has four visual variants in this game, determined by the type of flower at the base of its head branch:

  1. No flower.
  2. A very small flower with four rounded blue petals and a dark blue center.
  3. A large sunflower with sixteen long yellow petals and a brown center.
  4. A large flower with eight pink petals and a yellow center, resembling Natalie's Pink Flower headgear.

The Green Bush is one of the first foes the party can battle in the game, and it's about as strong as that distinction implies. It uses weak physical attacks on a single player; Bite is slightly stronger and purely non-elemental (and thus can't be resisted), but Leaf Stab is more accurate and has a small chance to Poison the victim. Additionally, it has a pair of screams for support moves: one hits the entire party for mild magical Wind damage and a fair Defence debuff, while the other sharply boosts its own Attack. While potentially annoying - especially with stronger physically-inclined foes around - the Green Bush is weak enough to be killed before it can really get its support going in most cases.

The Green Bush is vulnerable to most elements and status effects; while it absorbs Water, this is easily avoided. On the other hand, all three players have a means to exploit its severe Fire weakness; its Earth and Bio weaknesses are also easily accessible. Strangely, it's also extremely vulnerable to Berserk, although this should be avoided; it doesn't actually change the Green Bush's patterns and gives its attacks a little more power.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

Unlike other games, all Green Bushes have the same appearance, resembling the "pink flower" variant from EBF3 with less detailed leaves covering their body.

The Green Bush is a simple foe with non-elemental physical attacks; while they can't be resisted, their low Base Power and single-target nature makes them very manageable. Its only real asset is its Scream, which has a good chance to debuff the entire party's Defence - this debuff becomes a bit stronger on higher difficulty levels, but its infliction rate remains unchanged.

Amusingly, the Green Bush was even weaker than intended in the original version of EBF4; due to a programming oversight, it was limited to using its weakest attack at all times, as if it were Syphoned. This was fixed in the v2 update, although it remains a fairly inconsequential foe that can be picked off with multi-target attacks while the party focuses on more powerful enemies.

Aside from a Water absorption, the Green Bush has no resistances. It is very weak to Earth, even more vulnerable to Bio and Wind, and especially susceptible to Fire damage; the latter can be further exploited with its massive vulnerability to Burn. It's also easy to Stagger, reducing its life expectancy even further. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, its Earth and Bio weaknesses become absorptions.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

In this game, all Green Bushes have a small green leaf at the base of their head branch and a small, daisy-like flower with pale pink petals and a yellow center at the top of their head branch. Their visual variants are determined by the arrangement of other branches and leaves growing out of their head:

  1. A short brown twig protruding from the right side of the main branch, with a large green leaf growing behind the flower.
  2. A brown twig with two green leaves on the end, protruding from the back of the Green Bush's "head".
  3. A long brown bramble with light brown thorns protruding from behind the main branch, with a small green leaf growing behind the flower.

The Green Bush has two Bio-based attacks to choose from; a slap with its arms and its own version of Matt's Nettle skill. The latter has better Base Power and a small chance to Poison its target, but the former's low elemental degree makes Bio resistance negligible for reducing its damage. The Bush can also scream at the party to slightly reduce their Attack; on Hard and Epic difficulties, the debuff becomes a little stronger. This can be mitigated with the Brave status or the use of magic-based attacks instead of physical ones.

The Green Bush's main weaknesses are Fire and Bio; the former is further emphasized by its severe vulnerabilities to Burn, Scorch, and Dry. It also has lesser weaknesses to Earth and Wind, as well as severe vulnerabilities to Stagger and Wet. "More Foe Resistance" removes its Earth and Wind weaknesses while giving it a very strong Bio absorption.

Adventure Story[]

Green Bushes are fairly basic foes who charge at Matt to inflict damage. They are notable for their ability to hide in the background, jumping out as Matt walks by; their eyes are visible within their hiding place, occasionally blinking. They can also be summoned by the Giant Bush boss when it uses its jumping quake attack or upon its defeat.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

  • Anything → Leaf Stab (2/6), Bite (2/6), Thin Tone Scream (1/6), Deep Tone Scream (1/6).

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

  • Berserked → Bite;
  • Syphoned → Leaf Stab;
  • Otherwise → Leaf Stab (1/3), Bite (1/3), Scream (1/3).

Before the v2 update, an oversight caused the Green Bush to always execute its Syphoned pattern, rendering all other patterns impossible.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Action

  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Hit;
  • Otherwise → Hit (2/5), Nettle (2/5), Scream (1/5).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25% and not Syphoned → Scream.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Trees, the Green Bush will immediately Surrender and Flee on their turn.

Summon[]

In EBF5, the Green Bush can be captured and used as a summon. It uses its Scream to debuff the Attack of all enemies.

Trivia[]

  • EBF3's Bestiary claims that the Green Bush is resistant to Blind, despite this status effect not appearing in the game and the foe itself having no resistance to Accuracy debuffs.
