"These slimes are full of bombs... this might be considered a safety violation."
―Lance, Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Sludge Slime is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 4. It mostly appears in and around the Waste Disposal Plant.

Appearance[]

The Sludge Slime is a translucent black blob with an explosive embedded in its body; this doesn't seem to bother it, as it has the same "cat smile" as other Slimes. Its visual variants differ only by the explosive in their bodies, including:

  1. A gray naval mine.
  2. A pair of round black bombs with short brown fuses, similar to a Hand Bomb without the red "X" painted on its side.
  3. A slim gray missile with red details, identical to the one summoned by Air Strike's three-hit variant.

Overview[]

Like other Slimes, the Sludge Slime is a weak foe that won't be sticking around very long; unlike other Slimes, it's likely to kill itself before the party has a chance to. Every turn, it has a fifty-fifty chance to tackle a player and blow itself up, dealing a decent amount of magical Bomb damage with a fairly high Stagger chance. If it doesn't blow itself up, it simply inflicts a pitiful amount of non-elemental physical damage with no additional effects; this makes it the only Slime in EBF4 that can't afflict the party with the deadly Slimed status. Overall, it's somewhat more of an immediate threat than its brethren, as the chances of it using its explosive attack are much higher than other Slimes' chance of inflicting Slimed.

The Sludge Slime's self-destruction move is pure elemental, so Bomb resistance will greatly weaken or outright negate its threat level. Alternatively, it can be swiftly disposed of, especially given its numerous weaknesses (including to Instant Death), sparse resistances, and below-average Evade. If it can't be taken out quickly - usually because the party has more dangerous foes to worry about - its severe Freeze weakness can be exploited to immobilize it for a while; Syphon is another option to lock it out of its stronger attack. Conversely, Berserk will provoke it to immediately self-destruct; although the party can exploit this if they have high Bomb resistance, it's generally a waste of a turn due to the foe's high chance of blowing itself up normally.

Holy is the best element to use against a Sludge Slime, but Thunder, Fire, and Bomb are notable secondary weaknesses. It's also very easy to Freeze and extremely susceptible to Instant Death; its severe vulnerability to Doom and Weaken is comparatively irrelevant, as it is highly unlikely to live long enough for them to make a difference. Likewise, its resistance to Water, immunity to Earth, and ability to absorb both Bio and Dark will rarely come into play; even with free Poison acting like Regen on Hard and Epic difficulty, players will still have no shortage of effective multi-target skills to pick it off.

"More Foe Resistance" removes the Sludge Slime's weaknesses to Thunder, Holy, Weaken, and Freeze while making it immune to having its magic stats debuffed.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • Syphoned → Jump & back;
  • Berserked → Self-destruct;
  • Otherwise → Jump & back (1/2), Self-destruct (1/2).

Summon[]

The Sludge Slime summon can be obtained in the Premium-exclusive Battle Mountain area; more specifically, it's in a chest one screen to the left from the entrance, where the Armored Oak is fought. The chest is guarded by an eight-wave battle against foes from Ashwood Forest, represented by a Brown Bear; you'll also need The Axe to reach it.

When summoned, a Sludge Slime jumps at an enemy and explodes in their face, dealing decent magical Fire damage with high Accuracy and a great chance of Burning the target. It's stronger than a Level 1 Fireball, but it's otherwise not particularly notable.
