Monster Cards

Monster Cards are a collectible present in Epic Battle Fantasy 5, introduced in the v2 update of the game. They are found inside chests or as secrets throughout the world map. Each of the cards illustrates a monster with an informative description about them. Collecting the cards grants special bonuses to the players, with each card either increasing gold obtained from foes, the party's maximum SP, the damage dealt with Summons, or a multiplier that makes foes easier to Capture.

Some monster cards replace items in existing chests from the v1 version of EBF5. If you load a pre-v2 save where you already opened the chest containing a particular card, you can still obtain the card simply by visiting the map screen with the chest. There will be no popup telling you that you got the card, but it will appear in the info window.

There are a total of 50 Monster Cards in the game. Keep in mind that the card numbers are based on their number in the game's files, and thus don't correspond to how they're ordered in the game's card menu.

21		Lava Slime	Lava Slimes want to be loved, but everything they touch is incinerated. They contain the bones of their victims. Location: inside a chest accessible after beating Sol and Skadi				+1
22		Magma Slime	Magma Slimes live a miserable existence, as their body is crushed under the weight of a freshly grown, rocky layer. Location: inside the chest that appears after beating the King Slime EBF1 simulation in the Data Bunker.				+2
23		Volcano Slime	Magma Slimes that survive their awkward teenage years will become super-hot Volcano Slimes. Location: inside the chest that appears when PHOENIX is defeated.				+3
30		Normal Turtle	Normal Turtles will soon become fantasy creatures, when they become extinct in real life. Location: inside a chest in the east garden of the Grand Gallery.				+1
31		Derpy Turtle	Derpy Turtles lose the ability to swim when they evolve and grow feet. Even so, they still identify as turtles. Location: inside a chest that drops after defeating God.				+2
32		Titanic Turtle	Titanic Turtles roam the vast oceans, and attacking unsuspecting ships, by shooting little bits of rock-hard coral from their backs. Location: inside the chest that appears when CORALIA is defeated.				+3
46		Donut Snake	A rare birth defect can result in a Donut Snake. Unlike regular donuts, these will be very painful to eat. Location: inside one of the chests accessible after beating the Neon Valhalla.				+2
11		Potted Gloop	If it fits it sits, and Potted Gloops will fit in any container perfectly. Garbage cans are very popular among them. Location: inside the chest that appears after completing Natalie's 1P challenge in the Battle Arena.				+2
12		Crystal Gloop	Gloops develop distinct personalities, which are reflected in their homes. One with a cold personality may become a Crystal Gloop. Location: inside one of the chests accessible after beating the Crystal Hydra .				+2
13		Sandstone Gloop	Some Gloops may prefer warmer climates, and choose to settle down in a desert rock formation, thus becoming a Sandstone Gloop. Location: inside one of the chests in the 80 medal room of the Grand Gallery.				+2
39		Ice Mite	Ice Mites are arthropods that can be found in freezing-cold caves. They can throw their icy spikes if threatened. Location: inside a chest accessible after beating Sol and Skadi				+1
40		Ice Roach	Ice Roaches are often misunderstood. They will not intentionally harm humans - they simply suck the bacterial scum from cave walls. Location: chest in the slippery ice area before GUOYE's room.				+3
43		Specter	Specters are cursed souls who refuse to leave the mortal realm. They remain long after their original bodies have been destroyed. Location: inside one of the chests that appear when THE MAW is defeated.				+2
47		Toaster	Simple and straight-forward, this Toaster model does exactly what you would expect. Location: inside the chest that appears when ROBO is defeated.				+2
48		Baby Bacon	Baby Bacons are ferocious eaters. They will consume as many calories as possible, so that they may grow large and tasty. Location: in the left/west wing of the Greenwood Library.				+1
49		Bacon Roll	When Baby Bacons have fed enough, they form a Bacon Roll - a type of cocoon - and begin their transition into adult life. Location: inside the chest that appears when ANGRY CHAIR is defeated.				+2
50		Adult Bacon	Adult Bacons are a natural food storage unit. Their plump bodies contain huge quantities of salty calories. Location: locked behind a Gold Block in the Grand Gallery.				+3
4		Creepy Idol	Creepy Idols always have a look of utter dread and hopelessness, as if they've realized that they are simply stones. Location: in a chest locked behind a Copper Block in Anna's House.		+1%
5		Undead Boulder	It is unclear how Undead Boulders come to be, since rocks do not generally appear to be alive in the first place. Location: inside the chest that appears after completing Matt's 1P challenge in the Battle Arena.		+3%
9		Beholding Bat	Beholding Bats are very curious, and will follow strangers around. They are completely harmless until they evolve. Location: inside one of the secret spots in The Void.		+1%
10		Beholding Beast	Unlike its first form, the Beholding Beast is incredibly dangerous. Just look at it! Location: inside the chest that appears after beating the Beholder EBF1 simulation in the Data Bunker.		+3%
8		Eyeball Plant	Eyeball Plants produce delicious eye-shaped berries. It is uncertain if they can feel pain or not. Location: inside the chest that appears after beating the Rafflesia EBF4 simulation in the Data Bunker.		+2%
14		Famine Face	Famine Faces wander dirty cities at night, spreading disease and polluting the water supply. Location: inside one of the chests accessible after defeating Telperion.		+2%
15		Frosty Face	Frosty Faces descend from the sky during snowfalls. They're quite chill and mean no harm. Location: inside the chest that appears after beating the Giga Golem EBF2 simulation in the Data Bunker.		+2%
16		Fire Face	Fire Faces appear in large numbers during hot Summers. They start forest fires and are thus considered a pest. Location: inside one of the chests in the west side of the Crystal Caverns.		+2%
6		Snarky Radish	Snarky Radishes will defend themselves from predators by telling scathing jokes. Location: inside one of the chests in the Mystic Woods, north of the Slime Cat.		+1%
7		Snarky Tree	Snarky Trees can metaphorically destroy any opponent, with their fast talking and logical fallacies. Location: inside one of the chests that appear when GLOB is defeated.		+3%
28		Chibi Robot	Chibi Robots use their magnetic appendages to suck in bits of metal and grow larger. Location: inside the chest that appears after beating the Jack EBF3 simulation in the Data Bunker.		+1%
29		Dai Robot	This absolute unit is known as the Dai Robot. Dai means "big", and fittingly sounds like "die". Location: inside the chest that appears after beating the Praetorian EBF4 simulation in the Data Bunker.		+3%
34		Electron Child	Electron Children are made from pure electrical energy, and can evolve into many different forms. They are often used as batteries. Location: inside a chest in No Man's Land, on the screen with the graves.		+1%
35		Electron Cloud	Electron Clouds orbit each other to create thunderstorms. They can never touch, as their electrical charges keep them separated. Location: inside a chest in The Rapture, on the screen with the spikes puzzle.		+2%
36		Electron Knight	Electron Knights can launch mighty bolts of lightning from their spears. They may be the basis of many Viking legends. Location: inside one of the chests that drops after defeating God.		+3%
24		Touchy Octopus	Touchy Octopi will probe every orifice of your body. But only in a friendly way. Location: inside a chest on the Secret Island in The Great Sea (north of the seagull). Wait 2 minutes on the island and then try to leave the island; the chest will appear behind you.			+2%
27		Mountain Goat	In the warmer months, frozen Mountain Goats are found under the receding snow, and can be revived with a warm soup. Location: inside one of the chests in the Frozen Valley, west of the Slime Cat.			+2%
44		Hollow Soldier	Hollow Soldiers live in rotted out tree stumps. Their biggest natural enemy is the common house cat. Location: inside the chest that appears after completing NoLegs's 1P challenge in the Battle Arena.			+2%
41		Pupper	Puppers are Doggos that have been bred wrong. Much like Pugs, they cannot survive without constant life support. Location: in the right/east wing of the Greenwood Library.			+2%
42		Doggo	Doggos were once fierce and intelligent wolves, but were later bred by humans to be as pathetic and stupid as possible. Location: inside the chest that appears after completing Anna's 1P challenge in the Battle Arena.			+2%
38		Evil Fungus	Evil Fungi roam dark caves in massive groups. If you happen to eat one, you'll be teleported to another dimension. Location: inside one of the chests that appear when SNEK is defeated.	+2%
19		Spy Satellite	G*ogle's latest model of Spy Satellite will map out your neighbourhood and tell your boss if you misbehave. Location: inside the chest that appears when the puzzle in ROBO's room is completed.	+1%
20		Flybot Drone	This electric-powered Flybot Drone can operate for a full 3 minutes before needing to recharge for 3 hours. Location: inside the chest that appears after completing Lance's 1P challenge in the Battle Arena.	+2%
25		Angry Bee	An Angry Bee is born wheneve a regular bee has a bad day. It will remain angry for the rest of its life. Location: inside one of the chests in Hope Harbor, outside the Equipment Shop.	+1%
26		Fighter Bee	Fighter Bees received all the juiciest honeycombs as children, and turned out to be fierce and respectable adults. Location: inside one of the chests that appear when SNEK is defeated.	+2%
37		Sacred Guardian	Sacred Guardians are machines made with ancient technology. They have long outlived their creators, and their purpose is unknown. Location: inside the chest that appears after beating the Protector EBF3 simulation in the Data Bunker.	+3%
33		Sea Jelly	Sea Jellies float aimlessly on ocean surfaces, nibbling on any fish that get trapped among their tentacles. Location: inside a chest blocked by a Coral Block in the Rainbow River, west of the Slime Cat.	+2%
45		Fire Elemental	Fire Elementals are powerful and ancient demons. They use both melee and projectile attacks. Location: inside the chest that appears after beating the Sand Worm EBF2 simulation in the Data Bunker.	+2%
17		Cursed Medallion	If you ever find a shiny trinket with an evil-looking face, it's best to leave it alone, as it could be a Cursed Medallion. Location: inside the chest that appears when TOTOM is defeated.	+2%
18		Cursed Chest	Bending over and reaching deep into a Cursed Treasure Chest sets you up for a painful death. Always check for teeth. Location: inside one of the chests that appear when TREAGURE is defeated.	+3%

• Trading Cards - Collect 25 monster cards. Maybe they'll be valuable someday. But maybe not.
• Card Shark - Collect all 50 monster cards. Huh? Some of these are just normal animals and household objects...!?

Trivia

• The Monster Cards are based on collectible trading card games, with the design of the cards resembling the Pokemon Trading Card Game.
• Many of the Monster Cards are based on foes (and a few other things) from the Epic Battle Fantasy series.
  • Cards 1, 2, and 3 obviously reference Bushes. Card 1 ("Baby Bush") specifically resembles the Green Bush, Card 2 ("Big Bush") resembles a non-pixelized BOSH, and Card 3 ("Bazooka Bush") may be a reference to the Big Green Bush from Epic Battle Fantasy 4 or the giant bush bosses from spinoffs like Adventure Story or Bullet Heaven 2.
  • Card 4 ("Creepy Idol") resembles a Stone Idol.
  • Card 5 ("Undead Boulder") references the Boulders. The skull on its head also resembles the offhand item of the Human Skull, complete with red pinprick eye lights.
  • Card 9 ("Beholding Bat") is similar to a Blood Bat, but with the face replaced by a single eye. Likewise, Card 10 ("Beholding Beast") resembles a cross between a Blood Bat and the Beholder, the latter of whose name is referenced in both Card 9 and 10's names.
  • Card 12 ("Crystal Gloop") resembles a Hardy Gloop, which was called "Crystal Gloop" in beta versions of EBF5.
  • Card 13 ("Sandstone Gloop") resembles a Chunky Gloop, albeit with cacti growing on it like a Sand Slime.
  • Card 20 ("Flybot Drone") is obviously based on Flybots in general, but its color scheme and some of its design cues specifically resemble the Drill Bot from Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4.
  • Card 21 ("Lava Slime") shares its name with the Lava Slime from Epic Battle Fantasy 5, but its bone-laden appearance hearkens back to the Red Slime from Epic Battle Fantasy 3.
  • Card 23 ("Volcano Slime") resembles a Big Lava Slime.
  • Card 28 ("Chibi Robot") appears to be a non-pixelized ROBO.
  • Card 32 ("Titanic Turtle") shares its name and some of its design cues with the Titanic Turtle boss from Bullet Heaven 2.
  • Card 37 ("Sacred Guardian") depicts a robot whose head slightly resembles an Ancient Eye from Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4. Its description lightly references the relics and still-functioning creations of the ancient Kitten Kingdom seen in those games.
  • Card 38 ("Evil Fungus") has similarities to the Evil Mushroom from Epic Battle Fantasy 4, with a color scheme resembling its appearance in Adventure Story.
  • Cards 39 and 40 ("Ice Mite" and "Ice Roach", respectively) somewhat resemble the Icicle Creep from Epic Battle Fantasy 5.
  • Card 43 ("Specter") somewhat resembles The Destroyer, with its bone spike "limbs" resembling the Blade of Hell (albeit much smaller and with fire coming out of them instead of bony tentacles).
  • Card 45 ("Fire Elemental") is a direct reference to the Fire Elemental from Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4.
  • While likely a coincidence, Card 46 ("Donut Snake") could be a reference to SNEK, which curls into a "donut" shape in some of its battle animations. The pattern on its body also resembles a recolored, more detailed version of SNEK's design.
  • Card 50 ("Adult Bacon") somewhat resembles the pigs that could be interacted with in Epic Battle Fantasy 3.
• Some of the Monster Cards have non-EBF references as well.
  • Card 11 ("Potted Gloop") references the "If It Fits, I Sits" meme.
  • Card 14 ("Famine Face") appears to be a reference to the Pokémon Grimer, having a similar color scheme, a sludge-like appearance, and being described as living in polluted cities.
  • Card 19 ("Spy Satellite") practically namedrops Google and specifically references their Google Maps navigation service, which uses satellite imagery to provide detailed maps of locations down to individual houses.
  • Much like the Beholder, Card 24 ("Touchy Octopus") is a reference to the sexualization of tentacles popularly attributed to Japanese hentai.
  • Card 29 ("Dai Robot") references the "Absolute Unit" meme.
  • Card 30 ("Normal Turtle") references how many species of turtle are endangered, while Card 31 ("Derpy Turtle") references the slightly arbitrary distinction between turtles and tortoises (whether they have flippers or feet).
  • Cards 41 and 42 ("Pupper" and "Doggo", respectively) are references to Internet slang words for puppies and adult dogs, respectively.
  • Card 44 ("Hollow Soldier") is blatantly based on the player character in the Hollow Knight video game.
  • Card 47 ("Toaster") has the face and color scheme of Balrog from Cave Story.
• Several Monster Cards are based on scrapped creature designs drawn by Matt Roszak for the Epic Battle Fantasy series. Some of these designs appear in artwork in the 60 and 70 Medals Room of the Grand Gallery.
