The Magma Hand is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It typically appears in volcanic areas, such as The Rapture and the Lava Lake.

Appearance[]

The Magma Hand, as the name implies, is a hand made out of molten rock (although this would technically make it a Lava Hand, since the rock is above-ground). It has orange "skin" that is beginning to cool in the back, creating black spots and a craggy protrusion on its wrist. It grasps a random melee weapon (see below for chances).

*When viewed in the Bestiary, the Magma Hand has an equal chance to wield any of the Hands' weapons, including the Ice Sword it cannot use in-battle.

Overview[]

A Hand can change its weapon held depending on the weaknesses of the players. It has five different weapons available, each with different stats, and can change them every time it submerges itself for an attack. On Hard or Epic difficulty, it will be more likely to wield a weapon that exploits the party's weaknesses, and the chance of it switching weapons between turns increases. Applying Berserk prevents the Hand from switching weapons.

The Magma Hand can choose from the following weapons:

  • Knife: A part-Wind weapon that can occasionally Dispel the victim of its strikes. It's extremely accurate, but its damage output is tied with the Magma Sword for the lowest of the Magma Hand's weapons.
  • Sword: A non-elemental weapon that can sometimes apply Bad Luck. It's slightly more accurate than normal attacks, and its power is in the middle of the Magma Hand's weapons.
  • Magma Sword: A part-Fire weapon with a good chance to inflict a mild Burn. Its on-hit damage is the lowest of the Magma Hand's weapons, only matched by the Knife; it's also vaguely notable as the only one of the Magma Hand's weapons to have normal Accuracy.
  • Evil Axe: A part-Dark weapon with a decent Curse chance and slightly below-average Accuracy. It's technically the second-strongest of the Magma Hand's weapons, but it lacks the ability to perform a Triple Hit.
  • Mallet: A non-elemental weapon with a small chance to Stagger its target. It does more damage than any other weapon, but it also has the worst Accuracy among them. It also lacks the ability to use a Burst unless "Counter-Attacking Foes" is enabled.

On top of its weapon-based attacks, the Magma Hand can cast Fiery Fume to inflict physical Fire damage to one target, also having a great chance to Burn them. Alternatively, it can inflict Berserk on itself, increasing its power in exchange for preventing it from switching weapons.

As a foe literally made out of molten rock, the Magma Hand absorbs Fire, resists Bomb, and is immune to Chill, Freeze, Wet, and Dry. Fortunately, it also has several common elemental weaknesses; Ice is a good option, but Earth and Water are even more effective; in any case, its Evade is a hair below average, making it a little easier to hit.

If "More Foe Resistance" is on, the Magma Hand gains a Dark absorption and has its weaknesses dampened; it is now only slightly weak to Ice and Water and moderately vulnerable to Earth.

Battle Logic[]

Choosing a weapon
  • Standard weapon array: Sword, Knife, Mallet (twice), Evil Axe, Magma Sword (twice).
  • On Hard and Epic difficulties, chooses the best element to use (including EBF5 Status Lovable Lovable players) between Fire, Dark, Bomb and Wind, adding more weapons to the array depending on the outcome:
    • Fire → Magma Sword twice
    • Dark → Evil Axe twice
    • Bomb → Sword and Mallet
    • Wind → Knife twice
  • Then selects any position of the array to equip, with equal chance for each. For an example, on Hard/Epic and with Bomb being the least resisted element, final chances would be: 1/9 for Knife and Evil Axe, 2/9 for Sword and Magma Sword, 3/9 for Mallet.
  • Whenever the Hand burrows itself after attacking, it has a 25% (50% on Hard/Epic) chance to switch its weapon when it emerges again. The Hand cannot switch weapons if it's Berserked.
Attack patterns

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Flee;
  • If Berserked;
    • If using Knife/Sword/Magma Sword → Triple Hit (1/3), Burst (1/3), Swing (1/3);
    • If using Evil Axe → Burst (1/2), Swing (1/2);
    • If using Mallet → Triple hit (1/2), Swing (1/2);
  • If Syphoned → Berserk (1/5);
    • If using Knife/Sword/Magma Sword → Triple Hit (4/15), Burst (4/15), Swing (4/15);
    • If using Evil Axe → Burst (2/5), Swing (2/5);
    • If using Mallet → Triple hit (2/5), Swing (2/5);
  • Otherwise → Berserk (1/5), Fiery Fume (1/5);
    • If using Knife/Sword/Magma Sword → Triple Hit (1/5), Burst (1/5), Swing (1/5);
    • If using Evil Axe → Burst (3/10), Swing (3/10);
    • If using Mallet → Triple hit (3/10), Swing (3/10).

Before the v2 update, the Magma Hand had no Syphon behaviour.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25%;
    • If Syphoned → Burst;
    • Otherwise → Fiery Fume.

Summon[]

The Magma Hand can be captured and used as a summon; when called, it always uses the Magma Sword for its weapon, but this is purely aesthetic. It grants three stacks of Berserk to the active party, effectively acting like a fully-upgraded Raging Force that isn't locked to NoLegs.
