"We need water skills, and I happen to have one!"
Matt meets a Flame Sprite, Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Fire Sprite (called Flame Sprite in EBF4) is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. It is typically found in charred areas such as Ashwood Forest or The Rapture.

Appearance[]

The Fire Sprite is a small, vaguely humanoid creature made of orange fire. Its head and upper body are bright orange, while its skirt-like lower body is a lighter shade. Its head is covered in wispy protrusions resembling flames, befitting its element.

In EBF4, the Flame Sprite has a pair of blank white eyes and a small mouth that only becomes visible during certain animations. In EBF5, the Fire Sprite has more detailed orange-brown eyes, a small mouth that's visible at all times, a pair of light orange "blush spots" on its cheeks, and a diamond-shaped red gem on its forehead.

Overview[]

As the name suggests, a Fire Sprite uses Fire attacks with a specific focus on inflicting Burn on ally and enemy alike; the latter is more annoying than it sounds, since it usually groups up with Fire-absorbing foes. It can also exhale clouds of smoke to lower the Accuracy of the entire party, making it harder for them to hit their marks. Inflicting Syphon on it is an excellent way to reduce its capabilities; Berserk works too if the party has high Fire resistance.

Unsurprisingly, Fire Sprites absorb Fire, but they have serious weaknesses to Earth and Water with lesser vulnerabilities to Bio and Dark. They are also susceptible to Poison. Their base Evade is a little lower than average, so they're easier to hit even with their Accuracy-debuffing capabilities.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Flame Sprite is great at inflicting Burn on the party; all three of its skills can potentially inflict the status on their victims. Its best Burn skill also hits the enemy side, healing it and other Fire-absorbent foes over time - it also starts the battle with a Burn (nine stacks on Hard or Epic difficulty, three stacks otherwise), essentially acting as a makeshift Regen. It can also debuff Accuracy with Its other multi-target skill, but its only direct-damage option is a relatively weak single-target magic Fire attack.

Fire and Burn resistance will drastically reduce the Flame Sprite's ability to threaten the party, since all of its damage is pure Fire-elemental. However, it's not a very challenging foe even without the right resistance, with low HP, below-average Evade, and numerous elemental weaknesses. Similar to the Thunder Sprite, inflicting Syphon on it will force it to do nothing at all until the status wears off.

Flame Sprites absorb Fire and are immune to Bomb while being extremely vulnerable to Earth, Wind, and Water; Bio and Dark also work to a lesser degree. They are susceptible to Poison but immune to Freeze. The "More Foe Resistance" challenge makes it neutral to Wind and Dark and resistant to Stun, Dispel, and Syphon.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Fire Sprite has a weak non-elemental headbutt, but it prefers to use its fiery breath, which hits multiple times for light Fire damage and a decent chance of Burn. It can also reduce the party's Accuracy (also inflicting Shroud on higher difficulties) or rain Hot Ash on the entire battlefield to inflict Burns on ally and enemy alike; since it's often paired with Fire-absorbent foes, this translates to a weak Regen effect.

While it's not completely helpless if afflicted with Syphon, the Fire Sprite becomes much less of a threat when it's limited to its headbutt by the status. Berserk is another option, especially if paired with a Target tank that can apply Enchanted to themselves or has very high Fire resistance.

Interestingly, the Fire Sprite's base Attack and Magic Attack are higher than average, but this only offsets the low base power of its attacks. On the other hand, its base Evade isn't as high as the average foe; even if it debuffs your Accuracy, it's still a little easier to hit.

Fire Sprites absorb both Fire and Bomb (the former more so than the latter), but they're weak to Bio, Dark, and especially Earth and Water. Their Bio weakness is complemented by their vulnerability to Poison and Virus. If "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, their Water and Earth weaknesses are greatly reduced and they become resistant to Bio, Dark, Stun, Syphon, Doom, and Instant Death.

  • Syphoned → Nothing;
  • Otherwise → Spit Fire (1/3), Fiery Smoke (1/3), Hot Ash (1/3).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

  • 25% and not Syphoned → Fiery Smoke.

Summon[]

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

In EBF5, the Fire Sprite can be captured and used as a summon. It changes the weather to Hot Ash for five turns, being the only method through which the party can manually cause that type of weather.

Trivia[]

  • In EBF4, the Flame Sprite was noted by some fans to resemble Flame Princess, a character from the Adventure Time cartoon series. Matt Roszak's redesign of the foe for EBF5 only strengthened the resemblance.
