The Gaia Axe is an Earth-elemental sword for Matt in Epic Battle Fantasy 3.

The Gaia Axe is a large, double-bladed axe with a metallic copper head and pommel; the latter is studded with small spikes, with a larger one at its tip. Its handle is padded with red leather, and its head consists of a pair of curved, dark grey blades; two lines of incoherent runes are inscribed onto the latter.

The Gaia Axe has solid Attack (fourth-best among swords) and also comes with a moderate HP and Defence boost; however, it suffers from slight penalties to Evade, Accuracy, and MP. It also reduces Magic Attack by a fair amount, but the decrease is reduced at higher levels and Matt has little use for Magic Attack in most situations, It can lower a foe's Defence with its Unleash and can cast Quake as a bonus skill; the latter benefits from its Earth boost, as do Matt's natural skills.

While it seems like a reasonably balanced weapon that emphasizes Matt's best stats, the Gaia Axe can't match up to swords that will become available later on. The Soul Eater is much better for all-out offense while the Dragon Killer and Blizzard have better stats and fewer penalties for day-to-day use. With that said, the Gaia Axe is quite useful for the early game, being overall stronger than the Avenger except against Earth-resistant foes; it's also Matt's best weapon for the battle against Jack.

The Gaia Axe is slightly weak to Wind, which remains constant at all forging levels. On the other hand, it has resistance to Earth and the Poison element - up to 60% and 40%, respectively - at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The player begins the game with the Gaia Axe in their inventory, serving as Matt's alternative to the Avenger.

  • The Gaia Axe has the ignoble distinction of being the sword with the most stat penalties in Epic Battle Fantasy 3, lowering four of Matt's stats by small amounts.
  • The Gaia Axe's design would be modified into the Golden Axe seen in Epic Battle Fantasy 5.
