The Gem Idol is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. In EBF4, it is mostly found in Lankyroot Jungle and the Temple of Godcat; in EBF5, it mainly appears around the Forgotten Ruins.
Appearance[]
The Gem Idol has a more refined appearance than other Idols, being made of polished white stone and adorned with a colorful jewel - according to its EBF5 bestiary entry, the jewel is what animates its body. Its variants include:
- A rectangular Idol with diamond-shaped eyes, four more diamond-shaped holes forming a larger diamond shape on its front, and a round green gem on top of its body.
- A diamond-shaped Idol with round eyes, a smiling mouth with a single "tooth", limbs that appear slightly thinner than the main body, and a diamond-shaped red gem on its "forehead."
- An irregularly-shaped Idol with curved arms (one pointing up and one pointing down), half-circle eyes, an angular mouth connected to a groove running around its body, and a triangular blue gem on its pointed top.
Overview[]
Gem Idols have the standard Idol melee attacks, but they can also cast some magic, mostly Wind and Holy-based. Although they can inflict a few status effects and have above-average Magic Attack and Evade, they're fragile and generally weak opponents that can only hit one player at a time. Thunder, Holy, and Poison effects are ineffective against them, but they take extra damage from Bomb, Wind, and especially Dark.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]
The Gem Idol has the standard Idol jump attack (which is very slightly Earth-based), but it can also swoop at a player for physical Wind damage and a decent chance of Stagger or cast one of two basic attack spells; Gust simply inflicts Wind damage, while Shine deals Holy damage with a mediocre chance to apply several Weaken stacks. While none of its moves are particularly damaging, the Gem Idol's surprisingly high Magic Attack gives its spells a little more punch than its physical skills.
The Gem Idol is immune to Thunder, Holy, Burn, and Poison, but no resistances or absorptions. On the other hand, it is slightly weak to Wind, fairly weak to Bomb, and extremely weak to Dark. It also has a massive vulnerability to Curse, which makes it even more fragile by reducing its defenses over time; applying Weaken also amplifies its main elemental weakness while rendering its poor offensive output nearly nonexistent.
With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, the Gem Idol absorbs Wind and Holy while gaining resistances to Bio, Stun, and Tired.
Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]
Aside from their basic, slightly Earth-based Jump attack, Gem Idols exclusively use magic in battle. In addition to the Wind-based Ghostly Fly and a radial burst of Holy power, they can use an elemental spell based on their specific variant; the green Gem Idol can use Air, the red Gem Idol can use Fire, and the blue Gem Idol can use Ice. All of their spells can inflict status effects, but most of them aren't very impactful or suffer from very low infliction chances; the main exception is the Dispel inflicted by their Holy Burst. Higher difficulty levels increase the status chance on Ghostly Fly and Holy Burst
Despite good Magic Attack, slightly above-average Evade, numerous elemental resistances, and the ability to potentially boost its own Wind damage with Light, the Gem Idol is an annoyance at best. It has low HP, no debuff resistance, and almost no status resistances, allowing the player to debilitate or immobilize it with ease if they're not just killing it outright. Ghostly Fly also gives itself a few Light stacks, making it suffer even more damage from its Wind weakness. It only becomes somewhat problematic if accompanying stronger foes, since it can support them by Dispelling the party's buffs. If killing or immobilizing it is infeasible in these situations, the quickest solution is to inflict Berserk or Syphon, both of which prevent it from using Holy Burst.
The Gem Idol is weak to Bomb, Wind, and especially Dark, but it absorbs Holy and resists all other elements. Conversely, its only status resistance is an immunity to Poison and Virus; it is also incredibly vulnerable to Stagger. Activating "More Foe Resistance" makes it neutral to Bomb and Wind while turning its Earth and Bio resistances into an immunity and letting it absorb Fire, Water, Thunder and Ice.

Battle Logic[]
The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]
- Berserk or/and Syphoned → Jump;
- Otherwise → Jump (1/4), Ghostly Fly (1/4), Gust (1/4), Shine (1/4).
Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]
Action
- If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
- If Syphoned → Hit;
- If Berserk → Ghostly Fly;
- Otherwise → Holy Burst (1/3), Ghostly Fly (1/3), Magic* (1/3);
* "Magic" is Air for green gem, Fire for red gem and Ice for blue gem.
Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)
- 100% and not Syphoned → Holy Burst.
Summon[]
The Gem Idol is available as a summon in both EBF4 and 5, although its function is completely different between games.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]
The Gem Idol summon can be obtained as a reward from the Lankyroot Jungle block puzzle, which is located one screen below to the jungle's Slime Cat. The Hammer is required to get to this place.
When used, a quintet of Gem Idols appear and use their Ghostly Fly attacks, dealing high physical Wind damage to the entire enemy wave with high Accuracy. This is a rare example of a fully-elemental physical attack available to the players, especially from an element associated mostly with magic.

Trivia[]
- The EBF5 Gem Idol is one of the only foes in the series whose cosmetic variations actually affect their moveset.
