The Giant Squid is one of the bosses encountered in Epic Battle Fantasy 3. Fought at the end of Rock Lake, it is implied to be one of the peaceful denizens of the nearby ocean driven to violence by Akron's power. It reappears in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 as one of the summons available to the player.
Appearance[]
The Giant Squid is a large red cephalopod resembling a more cartoonish version of its real-world namesake. It has a bulbous, somewhat triangular mantle and ten limbs; eight short, sucker-covered arms which function as legs and a pair of long, thin tentacles. Its face consists of a large, funnel-like mouth and a pair of large, bulging eyeballs with orange irises.
Apparently, at least one of the fishermen in the area has taken a stab at the Giant Squid; its mantle has been stabbed by a large silver fork, and it has a large, "X"-shaped scar just beneath it. Judging by the latter's condition, the squid may have received that injury before it started attacking people.
Overview[]
Like Jack before it, the Giant Squid regularly summons foes to assist it; it mostly calls in basic Water foes like Blue Slimes and Spiral Crabs. However, it's the first boss in the game to have unique "helpers"; its Squid Arms* count as separate foes and can continue fighting even after the Squid itself dies (albeit only due to a coding error). The arms use nothing but Water attacks, but some of them are capable of inflicting Evade debuffs and status effects like Poison and Stun; one even hits the enemy side as well as the players, which acts as a weak heal for Water-absorbent foes. Most of the arms' attacks are partially elemental and physical in nature.
The Giant Squid itself uses a ton of Water-based attacks, but it can also cast Iceshard and spit Dark-based ink. Most of its attacks are magical and pure elemental, with the exception of Narwhal; it's physical and only 40% Water-based. Every several turns, it'll regenerate its Squid Arms to full health, also buffing its own defenses in the process; on Epic difficulty, this also gives it a huge offensive buff and it'll use the move almost twice as often.
The Giant Squid absorbs Water, strongly resists Fire, and is immune to Berserk, Death, and Stun. However, it has below-average Evade and serious weaknesses to Ice and especially Thunder, giving all three party members a means to quickly tear through its HP. Its Squid Arms have similar resistances and weaknesses, but they have normal Evade and weaknesses to Stun and Syphon (although the latter does nothing against them).
*Actually its tentacles, but erroneously referred to as arms in-game

Battle Logic[]
The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.
Giant Squid[]
- 6th turn and then every 5th turn → Regrow Arms;
- On Epic difficulty, it is instead used the 3rd turn and then every 2nd turn.
- Berserked → Bubbles;
- Since the boss is immune to Berserk, this pattern never comes into play.
- Syphoned → Ink Shot;
- ≥48.5% HP → Oil Spit (7/28), Ink Shot (7/28), Flood (2/28), Narwhal (2/28), Iceshard (2/28), Summon Blue Jellies (2/28), Summon Blue Slimes (2/28), Summon Blue Clays (2/28), Summon Spiral Crabs (2/28);
- <48.5% to ≥28.5% HP → Oil Spit (5/20), Ink Shot (5/20), Narwhal (2/20), Summon Blue Jellies (2/20), Summon Blue Slimes (2/20), Summon Blue Clays (2/20), Summon Spiral Crabs (2/20);
- <28.5 HP → Bubbles (5/30), Oil Spit (5/30), Ink Shot (5/30), Narwhal (3/30), Summon Blue Jellies (3/30), Summon Blue Slimes (3/30), Summon Blue Clays (3/30), Summon Spiral Crabs (3/30);
- Death → Summons Spiral Crabs.
All summon abilities spawn in two level 14 exemplars of the foe into slots 1 and 5.
- This section is incomplete. You can help Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki by adding required information to it.
To do: List other unused patterns.
Squid Arm[]
- Anything → Basic Strike (1/6), Double Strike (1/6), Poisonous Strike (1/6), Stunning Strike (1/6), Bubbles (1/6), Rain (1/6).
Although the tentacles are weak to Syphon, the status has no effect on them.
Strategy[]
Equipment[]
Water resistance is the main elemental concern, especially from the boss and its main helpers. Poison and Stun resistance helps mitigate the Squid Arms' disruptive potential, allowing the party to focus more on the Squid itself. Offensively, Thunder is the Squid's biggest weakness, but Ice is also very effective and Poison can wear it down over time.

A combination of either the Gas Mask/Pirate Gear or the Captain Hat/Leather Armor will give Matt solid resistances to Water and Stun; the Gas Mask also makes him resistant to Poison damage. Since the Blizzard isn't available yet, the Dragon Killer and the Black Fang serve as Matt's best weapons; the former hits the Giant Squid's Thunder weakness and tops off Matt's Stun resistance, while the latter allows him to easily stack Poison to chip away at the boss.

Natalie doesn't have many Water-resistant options, but combining the Nirvana, the Green Dress, and the Pink Flower should make her all but immune to the Squid Arms' attempts to Poison her; if sufficiently forged, she can even turn the status into a pseudo-Regen. The Nurse Hat is an alternative that makes her a bit more physically bulky while empowering her healing spells. Offensively, Natalie can use the Nirvana to efficiently stack Poison on the Giant Squid; the Green Dress's auto-skill can further accelerate the process. If you completed a quest for Krystal (conveniently right before the boss fight), the Arctic Wind gives Natalie added punch with her Ice magic, some resistance to the Squid's Iceshard attack, and a means to occasionally Stun foes if needed; forging it a few levels also lets it provide some useful Water resistance.

In terms of armor, Lance should use whichever combination of the Gas Mask/Pirate Gear or the Captain Hat/Leather Armor that Matt isn't using; the former may be preferred, since he lacks a weapon to top off his Poison resistance. He won't have any guns to amplify his elemental damage against the boss, but the Deep Blue provides Water resistance and the Rapturer can easily apply offensive debuffs to weaken the opposition; the latter is especially important on Epic difficulty in order to counteract the Giant Squid's offensive buffs. If you managed to complete Bartolo's quest before the fight, the Steel Shark is another Water-resistant option that also gives Lance great Magic Attack.
Battle[]
The Giant Squid fights with Water and Dark attacks, but mainly relies on its tentacles - which act as separate enemies - to deal physical damage and inflict status effects. If you want to fill out your Bestiary, don't forget to use Lance's Scan on one of the arms as well as the Squid's main body.
The Giant Squid is weak to Thunder and Ice, but it also lacks resistance to Poison damage; it's recommended to stack some Poison on it before hammering its weaknesses. Buffing Matt's Attack and then using Cleaver with the Dragon Killer should do high damage. Inflicting Syphon will force it to spam Ink Shot, which hits decently hard and severely cripples Accuracy; however, its single-target nature means that this can be counteracted with judicious use of Lock On or Softdrinks.
The Giant Squid will summon a lot of backup over the course of the fight, so you should focus on taking it down first. In terms of its non-Arm minions, the Slimes are probably the least threatening backup and thus preferable to leave alive; for comparison, the Jellies can slightly heal the boss with their Rain attacks, while the Crabs and Clays hit harder. The Squid also periodically heals and revives its Arms, buffing itself in the process; you won't have any Dispel effects this early, so your best bet is to either use Natalie's Kyun or have Lance use Crush and Unleash with the Rapturer to counteract the stat boosts.
Summon[]
The Giant Squid returns in Epic Battle Fantasy 4, but it is now one of the summons available to the player. It can be acquired two screens above Greenwood Village's Slime Cat, in Lankyroot Jungle, from a chest guarded by a battle that appears as a Green Jelly. Leafy Boots are required to get to the chest.
When used, Giant Squid will breathe watery bubbles which fly towards foes and pop above them. This deals magical Water damage to all foes, with above-average Accuracy and a high chance to inflict Wet.

Trivia[]
- Strangely, the Squid Arms are capable of fighting even after the Giant Squid has been defeated. This is actually an oversight: the code to remove the tentacles from the battle on boss' death does exist, but it uses incorrect syntax to identify their slots, making it non-functional.
- The Giant Squid returns in the cutscenes after completing Rock Lake, where it crashes the players' beach party by catching the beach ball Natalie threw at Matt. It proceeds to try and drown the boys by pulling them underwater with its tentacles, while using another tentacle to try and remove Natalie's bikini top. It is also seen in the ending cutscene, joining the players, NoLegs, Meow Meow, and the Tundra Mammoth in celebrating the defeat of Akron.
- It is unclear if the Giant Squid seen in the aforementioned cutscenes is the previously defeated boss or a new individual of the same species, but it's implied to be the latter. When the Giant Squid is defeated in battle, it clearly shows "X" eyes (usually symbolizing death), and both the medal for defeating it and Matt's post-battle comments imply that the party cut it up for food.
- While the Giant Squid itself only appears as a foe in EBF3, it inspired the Squids in subsequent games. To date, it remains the only member of this family whose tentacles count as separate enemies.
