GunKat-800XL is an optional boss and summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 introduced in the v2 update. It can be found in the Greenwood Library, being the first wave of the Sketch Boss Rush.

Appearance[]

GunKat-800XL is a drawing of a massive robot resembling a limbless cat; as such, it appears entirely in shades of gray. Its head resembles a skull, with small pointed ears, round black holes for eyes with small white pupils, a small, triangular hole for a nose, and a gaping mouth with rounded teeth and an enormous cannon mounted between its jaws. Its lower jaw is slightly askew, and a pair of curved plates are mounted on the supports connecting the two halves of its head; they presumably help to conceal the cannon when its mouth is closed.

GunKat-800XL has a boxy metal body with a grate on its chest, small arches on its lower back, and a pair of darker gray structures on the bottom-front corners. Its "tail" is a long metal wire which coils around the base of its body. Most of its body parts are dotted with small rivets to emphasize its mechanical nature.

Like the other Sketch Bosses, GunKat-800XL is depicted as a static image in battle, with "animations" consisting of it briefly flashing or being moved around by an invisible force. If it leaves the screen (such as when using its Ram attack), a giant pencil will redraw it in its original position.

Overview[]

Being the first of the Sketch Bosses, GunKat-800XL is quite straightforward and not exceedingly difficult compared to what follows after. It uses part-Bomb attacks along with a non-elemental ram; these moves can inflict Disable, Stagger, and Dry, and one of its attacks even hits backup party members. Its Accuracy is above-average and its base offenses are quite high; coupled with its ability to easily set up damage combos, it can cause a lot of damage in a short time if not approached carefully.

Like the other Sketch Bosses, GunKat-800XL will buff itself and attack with pencil stabs as its HP falls past certain thresholds. Neither of these take up its turn, so the party will have to be ready to endure additional damage on those turns. Higher difficulty levels greatly improve its status infliction on top of letting its buffs apply positive effects like Regen and Brave; the latter is especially worrisome when paired with its penchant for Staggering players.

GunKat-800XL is immune to Bio and Wind while resisting Fire; on the other hand, it is weak to Thunder, Water and especially Bomb. It also resists all stat debuffs (except for Evade) and is immune to most status effects (including Invisible and Enchanted) except for Confuse, Stagger, Wet, Dry, Light, Heavy, and Dispel.

After level 26, GunKat-800XL gains a 5% boost to Attack and Magic Attack, and a 2.5% boost to HP and Accuracy on every level-up (these boosts stack additively, acting as a multiplier). This boost caps out at level 36.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Start of Turn (only if Foe Remix is enabled)

  • Summon score ≥ 3;
    • Summons a Jet Fish (same level as user).

* Summon score increases by 1 if no other foes are left (checked at the start of GunKat-800XL's turn), and resets to 0 after summoning foes.

Pencil

  • ≤79% HP and hasn't used Pencil Stab yet → Pencil Stab;
  • ≤49% HP and only used Pencil Stab once → Pencil Stab;
  • ≤19% HP and only used Pencil Stab twice → Pencil Stab.

* Since each cast of Pencil Stab doesn't take up an action, more than one can happen in a single turn if enough damage is dealt at once.

Buff

  • ≤74% HP and hasn't Buffed yet → Buff 1 (1/2), Buff 2 (1/2);
  • ≤49% HP and has Buffed only once → Buff 1 (1/2), Buff 2 (1/2);
  • ≤24% HP and has Buffed only twice → Buff 1 (1/2), Buff 2 (1/2).

* Since each cast of Buff 1/Buff 2 doesn't take up an action, more than one can happen in a single turn if enough damage is dealt at once.

Action

  • If Berserked, or catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Explosive Shell;
  • Otherwise → Ram (1/4), Triple Rocket (1/4), Triple Shot (1/4), Explosive Shell (1/4).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 20% → Explosive Shell.

Strategy[]

Equipment[]

Obviously, Bomb resistance helps with reducing the damage dealt from a majority of the boss's attacks. Stagger, Disable and Dry resistance may also be a good idea.

Battle[]

GunKat-800XL likes to use Bomb attacks against the party, almost all of which hit everybody. However, it also has a non-elemental Ram attack that can inflict Dry, increasing the damage dealt from its own Bomb attacks. The combination of Dry and Stagger inflicted by GunKat-800XL's Bomb attacks can lead to serious damage without proper resistance.

Offensively, the player should use Bomb attacks against GunKat-800XL and use Dry to increase the damage inflicted. The player can also inflict Wet on the boss and then target its Thunder weakness, but this will do less damage (and straight-up backfires if More Foe Resistance is enabled, which lets GunKat-800XL absorb Thunder). Unlike most bosses, GunKat-800XL is immune to all of the status effects that would normally be great in boss battles (i.e. Curse, Weaken and Tired), so an attrition strategy is ineffective.

Pay attention to GunKat-800XL's health as you wear it down; at certain HP thresholds, it will get free attacks and buffs to its Attack, Magic Attack and Accuracy; these buffs also give it Regen and Brave on Hard and Epic difficulties. Dispelling or reversing its buffs should be a priority.

Summon[]

GunKat-800XL can be captured to be used as a summon. It starts by firing its Triple Rocket for three hits of physical Bomb damage to all foes, then follows up with its Explosive Shell to hit them for magical Bomb damage. All of these attacks ignore defensive buffs.
