"Stop pretending to be a foe, tree, you're just a tree."
―Matt, Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Haunted Tree is a recurring foe in the Epic Battle Fantasy series. It usually appears in forested areas like Vegetable Forest or haunted areas like Graybone Cemetery. In Epic Battle Fantasy 5, it appears in the Data Bunker as one of the Classic foes in the Epic Battle Fantasy simulations.

Appearance[]

The Haunted Tree is an unknown species of tree possessed by an evil spirit. It is covered in rugged brown bark with several roots on its base and a few branches on top. The most obvious sign of its possession is the face formed from holes on its trunk: two narrow slits acting like eyes and a huge, jagged hole serving as a mouth. When taking a powerful attack or being killed, the tree's eyes visibly widen.

The Haunted Tree's basic appearance has remained consistent throughout its appearances, with the main variation being what adorns its branches in each game:

  • In Epic Battle Fantasy 1 and 5, the Haunted Tree has seven orange falcate leaves sparsely growing on its branches and several mushrooms growing out of its trunk. There are long, thin mushrooms with purple caps alongside short, fat mushrooms with white-spotted red caps; some of the latter also sprout on the base of the tree's trunk, near its roots.
  • In Epic Battle Fantasy 3, the Haunted Tree looked very similar to its EBF1 appearance, but its leaves are green instead of orange and the mushrooms growing at its base were removed.
  • In Epic Battle Fantasy 4, the Haunted Tree lost its old leaves and mushrooms in favor of four pinnately lobed orange leaves dotting its branches.

Overview[]

The Haunted Tree uses fairly weak, often Bio-based magic attacks, but power isn't its strong suit. Instead, it specializes in afflicting the party with status effects, usually Poison and some more exotic ailments. This can make it aggravating in drawn-out battles (particularly when paired with more immediately powerful enemies), but it's generally a low-priority target that can be dealt with at the player's leisure, especially since its Evade is about as good as you'd expect from an stationary (if possessed) tree.

Haunted Trees are consistently weak to Fire, with Earth and Thunder being common secondary weaknesses; on the other hand, they tend to absorb Water. For maximum efficiency, the player should generally hit them with multi-target attacks like Flame Burst or Thunder Storm, allowing them to pick off the trees while damaging other foes; if they need to be focused on, a turn or two of hitting their weaknesses (or even neutral elements) should topple them in short order.

Epic Battle Fantasy[]

Haunted Trees appear in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh waves of the game, serving as the player's breather between the Beholder and the Defender. They will appear in steadily-increasing numbers (first one, then two, then three), but they'll be individually weaker to compensate; in the tenth wave, aim for the lower tree first, as it has higher offensive stats than the upper tree.

The Haunted Tree can call up Vines for single-target physical damage or fling spores from its branches to hit both players at once for light magical damage. The lime-green spores are slightly stronger, while the dark green spores have a fairly high chance to Poison the victims; it's only one stack, but make sure to have Natalie on standby to Purify the status if it starts to pile up or you're close to beating Wave 11.

The Haunted Tree has no elemental resistances, but it's very weak to Eruption and especially Fireball.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

The Haunted Tree exclusively uses Poison attacks, but it won't be doing an especially worrisome amount of damage with them; its strongest attack, Vines, has middling power (although it also comes with a fairly high chance to apply two stacks of Poison), below-average Accuracy, and only hits one player. Its spore attacks are even weaker (albeit much more accurate), but their pure Poison magical damage isn't the problem; it's the status effects they can potentially apply to the entire party. The Green Spores aren't too bad, only inflicting a light Poison status, but the Yellow Spores have a chance to Stun their victims; they probably won't affect everyone at once, but expect to have at least one player lose a turn unless they have some status resistance.

The party's options will be a little limited when they encounter the Haunted Tree for the first time, but Natalie can all but completely shut it down if she's learned Purify; if not, Garlic is a pretty good alternative. Curing Stun should be a priority unless a Poisoned player is low on HP or the status has several stacks. Once you work around the status effects, the Haunted Tree isn't threatening at all, especially since it has slightly lower-than-average Accuracy and mediocre Evade. Don't bother trying to Syphon or Berserk it; its pattern won't change at all.

The Haunted Tree has an enormous Water absorption, but this is easily avoidable given the party's dearth of Water attacks. It's also resistant to Poison damage (but not the status), as well as Doom and Death. Conversely, it is weak to Earth, even weaker to Thunder, and especially weak to Fire; all three elements should be easily accessible to the party, giving them plenty of options to cut down this possessed plant.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Haunted Tree has an insidious mixture of Dark and Bio attacks to chip away at the party and make them more vulnerable to its stronger allies. Its multi-target attacks are very weak (despite a fairly high critical hit chance), but they can apply annoying status effects; its spores can Poison, and its dark breath inflicts a significant amount of Curse, albeit rarely. If it wants to make a bigger impact, it can use its stronger single-target moves; Vines is notable as the only physical attack it'll use under normal circumstances, while Haunt stands out for its high chance to apply eight stacks of Curse on the victim.

Luckily for the party, it'll take time for the Haunted Tree's status effects to really make an impact, giving them a chance to cure them with Purify, Medipack, or other methods. Applying Bless leaves it with only its mediocre damage output to fall back on, but Syphon and Berserk are even more crippling; either status will force the Haunted Tree to use a weak part-Earth physical attack with no special effects. Of course, the simplest method to end its threat is to kill it outright, a task made simpler by its low Evade and numerous weaknesses.

Fire and Holy are the Haunted Tree's most severe weaknesses, but Earth, Thunder, and Wind will also deal extra damage to it. On the other hand, it's immune to Dark and absorbs Water. It's also very easy to Syphon and incredibly susceptible to Burn: the latter gives another incentive to focus on Fire attacks. If "More Foe Resistance" is active, it gains Bio and Dark absorptions, along with immunity to Curse, Doom, and Instant Death; additionally, it becomes neutral to Thunder and has its Holy and Fire weaknesses lessened.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Haunted Tree is largely based on its first appearance in the series, but with some enhancements to befit a late-game optional foe. It has Vines for decent single-target physical damage, but it can also flick spores at the players for light magical damage and a risk of suffering status effects. The Lime Spores have a small Stun chance while the Dark Green Spores can reliably Poison players; on higher difficulty levels, the former gains a much higher infliction chance and the latter applies a slightly stronger Poison effect. To better replicate EBF1, it has ludicrously high Accuracy and literally zero Evade, ensuring that neither it nor its enemies can miss their targets; additionally, it ignores Lovable status like all Classic foes.

All of the Haunted Tree's attacks inflict Bio damage, but two of them have very low elemental degrees and its sole pure-Bio attack is weak enough to be insignificant. As such, elemental resistance is negligibly effective unless you plan on absorbing Bio to exploit the Poison from its Dark Green Spores; on the other hand, status resistance (especially against Stun) is highly recommended. Inflicting Syphon will lock it into Vines, preventing it from using its annoying status skills; Berserk is another option, but the power boost makes it less desirable.

Much like its debut appearance, the Haunted Tree resists no elements and has an extreme Fire weakness. However, it's immune to the majority of status effects (including Enchanted and Invisible), with the exceptions being Stun, Poison, Virus, Syphon, Dispel, Doom, and Instant Death; it also has a decent resistance to all non-HP debuffs. "More Foe Resistance" halves its Fire weakness while making it immune to Holy and Dark.

Adventure Story[]

Haunted Trees also appear as enemies in Adventure Story, featured in the game's first two worlds. They are stationary and attack by spitting clouds of little poison bubbles at Matt when they notice him.

Summon[]

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Haunted Tree can be captured and used as a summon. It throws its Lime Spores over all foes, inflicting very low magical damage with a slight Bio element and a decent chance of Stun.

Although it shouldn't be relied upon to affect foes with any sort of Stun resistance, the Haunted Tree is a cheap and fairly effective method of Stunning an entire wave's worth of non-resistant foes, especially when paired with Bad Luck support. Its pitiful damage is actually an asset in this regard, allowing it to be used on even Bio-absorbing foes with minimal risk of healing them.
