  • The Heaven's Gate in EBF1-4

The Heaven's Gate is one of Matt's recurring swords in the Epic Battle Fantasy series.

Description

The Heaven's Gate is a large, two-handed broadsword with an elaborate golden handguard. The handle is dark red with a golden point, and the guard bears two red gems and several small wing designs. The bright, white-silver blade has two curved points at the base, four smaller points along its length as it tapers towards the tip, and diamond-like red markings in its center.

The Heaven's Gate is one of Matt's most iconic weapons; it can easily be considered his signature weapon, since it is wielded in virtually all of his appearances (including Brawl Royale) and is often available from the beginning of the game (with EBF3 and EBF5 being the main exceptions). It usually gives Matt a balanced offensive boost, allows his weapon-elemental attacks to inflict Holy damage, and increases the power of his Holy skills. Later games also allow it to unleash a Holy skill with weapon-elemental attacks, as well as giving it resistances to Holy and Dispel, among other statuses.

Epic Battle Fantasy

The Heaven's Gate is Matt's default and most balanced weapon, slightly increasing all of his stats. Besides the Seiken boost and a very slight Legend boost, it also makes all weapon-elemental attacks (Normal Attack, Drain, Wind Slash and Legend) Holy-elemental, calculated off targets' Seiken resistance.

Epic Battle Fantasy 2

Much like in the original game, the Heaven's Gate gives balanced boosts to both offenses and defenses as well as Evade. It can reduce the Accuracy of foes with its Unleash, and increases the power of Seiken.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Heaven's Gate has solid boosts to Attack and Magic Attack, as well as a pinch of Accuracy and Evade. It has a chance to debuff enemies' Accuracy with weapon-elemental attacks, and can unleash Shine as a bonus skill; unfortunately, a programming mistake prevents the pure damage spell from reaching any decent power levels.

When used with the Unleash skill, it will heal Matt of Poison and Doom. All other statuses do not allow Matt to use Unleash while being afflicted.

The Heaven's Gate resists Holy and Dispel, with the latter becoming an immunity at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Heaven's Gate has above-average offenses and somewhat raises Evade. It counters with a Normal Attack, and may unleash Holy Sword as a bonus skill.

The Heaven's Gate has less raw power than the Sapphire Giant, but it is otherwise comparable to most of Matt's elemental swords. Like all swords, it is effectively replaced by the Equilibrium at the very end of Battle Mountain.

The Heaven's Gate resists Holy, Weaken and Dispel. All but the Holy resistance become immunities at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

Normal

The Heaven's Gate is a solid offensive weapon that gives good boosts to both offenses and a nice bit of Evade. It will counter with Unleash and may unleash Seiken as a bonus skill; combined with its resistances, it's a good choice for an offensive Matt build.

The Heaven's Gate resists Holy, Dispel, Weaken and Tired. All but the first become immunities at Level 5.

Equip Remix

The Alt Heaven's Gate is an interesting defensive weapon suited for a tank build. Its stats are unimpressive but balanced, with below-average Attack and Magic Attack, modest Defence and Magic Defence, and small boosts to HP and Accuracy. While it increases the power of Holy skills, its unimpressive offensive stats mean it won't make much use of said boost. It has a high chance of unleashing Purging Flame, which can Dispel the target and debuff their Magic Attack. Its weapon-elemental skills also have a massive chance of inflicting Weaken, and it grants Auto-Revive to Matt when he Defends himself.

The Alt Heaven's Gate mainly sees use in a Target tank build, protecting Matt from several dangerous status effects while adding Auto-Revive to whatever other on-Defend effects he is using. Its high Weaken chance also can be useful to help lower enemy offences while leaving them vulnerable to follow-up Dark attacks.

The Alt Heaven's Gate resists Holy, Curse, Bad Luck, Doom, and Instant Death; at Level 5, it becomes immune to all of them.

Trivia

  • The Heaven's Gate is a reference to the two-handed sword of the same name in MapleStory; a game that Matt Roszak played a lot in his youth.
  • The Heaven's Gate is one of the most iconic symbols of Epic Battle Fantasy. Apart from being Matt's signature weapon, in every game from EBF3 onwards, it also appears as the loading screen's progress bar.
  • A larger version of the Heaven's Gate appears in the center of both the Ragnarok Limit Break and the Catastrophe summon, while a bright, white version appears as part of the Light Blade and Seiken skills.
  • In EBF5, Matt notes that he feels oddly familiar with the Heaven's Gate when he uses it in battle for the first time. However, due to the nature of EBF5, Matt dismisses it as some bizarre coincidence.
