"This hat isn't my style at all. I'm a gentleman - not a savage!"
―Lance, Epic Battle Fantasy 5
Viking Fur and Helmet

Matt & Lance with the Viking Helmet in EBF4.

The Horned Helmet, also known as Viking Helmet prior to EBF5, is a male hat available in Epic Battle Fantasy 3, 4 and 5. Its armor counterpart is the Viking Fur, and its female counterparts are the Fur Hat and the Fur Dress; the Ice Shards can also be considered a female counterpart, albeit to a lesser degree.

Description[]

The Horned Helmet is a conical helmet made of brown wood with silver metal reinforcements and a pair of curved, off-white horns. In EBF3, one of its horns is broken, and in EBF5, the horns point downward at a sharp angle.

In EBF5, the Horned Helmet changes color to match the Spartan Cuirass and the Shell Armor if worn with them. With the Spartan Cuirass, it becomes red with golden reinforcements; with the Shell Armor, it becomes black with bright golden reinforcements.

The Horned Helmet usually increases Attack and both defenses while lowering Magic Attack, but its most memorable trait is its tendency to make the wearer go Berserk, which boosts his strength even further at the cost of forcing him to use random weapon-elemental skills on random foes. Its value changes dramatically between games for various reasons.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

The Viking Helmet provides a massive Attack boost which is further amplified by its auto-Berserk effect; furthermore, it provides good bonuses to all stats outside of MP and Magic Attack, neither of which are used by a Berserk player. As the characters cannot have their order switched around in EBF3, do note that a Viking Helmet-equipped Matt cannot do anything else for the duration of the battle unless he's freshly revived (and not from Auto-Revive) or the battle has just started; in which case he has one turn to do as he pleases before the Berserk effect kicks in.

While the magic-focused Lance generally can't make good use of it, the Viking Helmet is a powerful option for Matt that allows him to readily wipe the floor with any and all foes who do not absorb the element of his equipped sword. It's an integral part of the deadly "Soulzerker" build, along with the Soul Eater and the Genji Armor. However, having a player in a constant Berserk state seriously limits their versatility; other hats will prove more reliable in most situations.

Curiously, the Viking Helmet's Berserk boost also affects skills used by Equipment Effects, including Narwhal and Wooly Mammoth. This allows it to be surprisingly useful for a specific Lance build; pairing it with the Pirate Gear and the Deep Blue enables him to output an impressive amount of otherwise-rare Water damage against the relevant foes.

The Viking Helmet has no elemental or status resistances, but it resists Attack and Defence debuffs, up to 50% at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Viking Helmet has solid Attack and above-average boosts to Defence and Magic Defence, although this comes at the cost of a large Magic Attack penalty. It's one of the rare hats to resist two elements at once, but it's most notable for having a chance to make its wearer go Berserk at the start of every turn.

Compared to its EBF3 incarnation, the Viking Helmet is a little more versatile; not only is its wearer more likely to have some free turns to do as he pleases, the player can now customize the front line to keep the wearer away from the first position, enabling them to cure Berserk or swap him to Backup as needed. This is particularly useful for an offensive/support Matt build; Lance's relatively lacking physical options mean that he'd rather wear magic-focused headgear like the Mage Hat.

However, the Viking Helmet having a chance of Berserk each turn instead of guaranteed Berserk makes it rather unpredictable; as such, the player may prefer hats that provide other bonuses for a more controlled and tactical strategy as opposed to raw power. For Attack in particular, the Death Mask is a viable alternative; it's literally two-and-a-half times as powerful and has an innate means to buff Attack even further in exchange for lower defenses and a significant loss of Accuracy.

The Viking Helmet resists Ice and Wind, but it won't be immune to either of them at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Normal[]

The Horned Helmet offers great defenses and amazing Attack - it's tied with the Necromancer's Helmet for the second-best Attack of any male hat. However, this comes at the aggravating price of making the user permanently Berserk without interference of Ice, Water, Wet, Chill, or status-healing skills. It also reduces Magic Attack by a significant amount, but the effects of Berserk render that a moot point.

Unlike previous appearances, all three of the Horned Helmet's potential wearers have viable physical builds to make use of its abilities; it is recommended to keep the user away from the front of the party, in case the player wants to switch him out on any given turn. However, a Berserk-enhanced offensive is generally less useful than elemental skills boosted by weaknesses and neutral status effects; elemental weapons can mitigate this, but the part-elemental nature of weapon-elemental skills still makes them less effective than pure elemental attacks.

Ultimately, the Horned Helmet has its uses, but it's typically outclassed by hats that don't take control away from the player; if Berserk is desired, NoLegs can cast Raging Force instead. The Death Mask has even more Attack power without the issues of Berserk, and its own weaknesses (such as horrible Accuracy and negative resistances) are typically more manageable in the heat of battle.

The Horned Helmet resists Ice and Wind. Neither becomes an immunity at Level 5.

Equip Remix[]

The Alt Horned Helmet has a good Defence boost and unmatched Attack; the latter is literally more than twice as high as the next-best option. Unfortunately, it also has large penalties to Magic Attack and Magic Defence, a weakness to three common elements, and absolutely no special effects, which mainly limits it to "glass cannon" physical attacker builds (such as Alt Buster Sword NoLegs or Alt Chainsaw Gun Lance).

The Alt Horned Helmet is moderately vulnerable to FireThunder, and Ice. These weaknesses remain consistent at all forging levels.

Adventure Story[]

The Viking Helmet also appears in Adventure Story as one of the hats available to the player. It greatly increases Matt's HP and attack power, but renders him incapable of using any magic. The player will earn the "Master Warrior" Medal upon their first attempt to play a stage with the Viking Helmet equipped.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

The Viking Helmet is found in the restricted 20 Medals Area of Rock Lake. It is inside the top-left chest, and can be obtained without triggering the ambush battle further down the pier.

Trivia[]

  • The EBF5 version of the Horned Helmet bears some resemblance to the Iron Helmet from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, although it lacks the face plate.
