Emo0083 "This is an older model. It was discontinued when engineers decided it was a bad idea to give robot fish machine guns. There's a funny story about that..."
―Lance, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Jet Fish (also known as Steel Fish) is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. It's frequently found in industrial areas, such as the Waste Disposal Plant and the Iron Fortress.

Appearance[]

The Jet Fish is a mid-sized robot that vaguely resembles a fish, possibly a bass. It is made entirely out of grey and silver metal (probably steel, at least in EBF4), with a large projection on its back resembling a dorsal fin. Like all Fishes, it has rocket engines to keep itself afloat; fixed thrusters on its rear and two movable thrusters on its sides.

In EBF4, the Steel Fish has a metallic silver grate covering its mouth-like frontal vent, a single "tail" engine, and blue flames for exhaust. Its EBF5 incarnation loses the front grate, adds two smaller engines to its rear thruster, and emits light purple flames for exhaust; its color scheme is slightly darker overall.

Overview[]

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Steel Fish is armed with a single-target Wind attack, a multi-target Thunder spell, and a physical Bomb attack that hits random targets multiple times (on Epic difficulty, it has double the hits). While its attacks are generally not especially strong, its Thunder attack can Stun the party; fortunately, the infliction chance is low enough that even a slight Stun resistance will negate the risk. Aside from its Machine Gun attack, all of its moves have 100% elemental degrees, so raising the appropriate resistances will greatly reduce their damage.

Like all Fishes, the Steel Fish can perform one last attack on death, hitting one player for moderate magical Bomb damage with a high chance to Stagger. This can be avoided by defeating the Steel Fish as the final foe in the wave; keep in mind that its Evade is a little higher than normal.

The Steel Fish is seriously vulnerable to Thunder, but it's often paired with the Thunder-absorbing Copper Fish; fortunately, it has similarly severe weaknesses to Wind and Bomb, so Shockwave and Air Strike will remain effective multi-target options. On the other hand, the Steel Fish is immune to Burn, Earth, and Poison (including the Poison status) while being quite resistant to Freeze.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Jet Fish mainly uses Bomb attacks, with one being single-target magic and the other dealing multiple hits of physical damage to random targets. It can also use Plasma Wave (which can debuff the party's Evade) and a non-elemental ram attack. Its Evade is slightly higher than average, but this won't be more than a minor annoyance unless you're using low-Accuracy equipment or skills.

When killed, the Jet Fish will launch its thrusters at a random player, hitting them with a final Energy Bomb. The damage isn't especially notable, but hitting the Jet Fish with Syphon or Stun will prevent it from launching its last attack entirely.

The Jet Fish is immune to Earth, Poison, and Virus while being fairly resistant to Bio. Its primary weakness is Thunder, with lesser vulnerabilities to Wind and Bomb. However, be careful if you're dealing with other Fishes at the same time; the Steam Fish is neutral to Thunder, and the Gold Fish absorbs both Thunder and Bomb. In these cases, Wind attacks like Shockwave or Power Metal are your best bets for eliminating all of the Fishes at once.

With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, the Jet Fish loses its Wind weakness and becomes immune to Fire, Ice, Bio, and Water. It also gains significant resistances to Evade and Accuracy debuffs.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

  • Death → Mini Missiles;
  • Berserked → Bombs;
  • Syphoned → Cooler;
  • Otherwise → Cooler (1/3), Machine Gun (1/3), Bombs (1/3).

Mini Missiles will not be activated if no foes are left in the wave.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Flee
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Plasma Wave (3/4), Machine Gun (1/4);
  • If Syphoned → Ram;
  • If Berserked → Machine Gun;
  • Otherwise → Ram (1/4), Machine Gun (1/4), Plasma Wave (1/4), Energy Bomb (1/4).

Additionally, the Jet Fish will use Fish Missiles when it's killed (unless it's Syphoned or Stunned).

Unlike most other foes, the Jet Fish doesn't get a counter when Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled.

Summon[]

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Jet Fish can be captured to be used as a summon. When used, a Jet Fish will fire its Machine Gun at all enemies, hitting them four times for decent physical Bomb damage.
