- "How is that cyclops speaking without a mouth? Is it just talking out of its ass?"
- ―Matt, Epic Battle Fantasy 5
Jotun is the first boss encountered in Epic Battle Fantasy 5, as well as a summon. He appears at the end of Hope Harbor, blocking the path to the Ice Cave that he apparently calls home.
Appearance[]
Jotun is a hulking, brown-skinned humanoid with a clump of boils where a neck and head should be; instead, he has a single large eye in the middle of his chest. He has a big round belly, but the rest of his torso is quite muscular. His arms are almost as long as his entire body, dotted with white bone spikes and small brown speckles; his hands have four large fingers ending in small claws. In contrast to his brawny upper body, his legs are very short, ending in small feet with three clawed toes. He wears a ragged red kilt held up by a brown rope with dark brown beads on the end; another rope is wrapped around his left hand.
As Jotun takes damage, a few drops of sweat begin beading on the side of his torso and a small wound appears on his stomach (inexplicably covered by two white bandages arranged in an X-shape). When his HP is especially low, a purple bruise appears around his eye as more sweat beads above it, and another wound appears on his side, covered by a single white bandage.
If you have the Mature filter on, Jotun will have visible nipples on his chest and a brown appendage dangling below his kilt.
Personality[]
Jotun is a self-confident cyclops. He frequently yells in third-person English with poor grammar, giving the impression of a brutish personality. He believes that his combat abilities are unmatched, but starts to become worried at low HP. If captured, he acts more humble and appears to willingly work with the party, claiming to understand their "strength of numbers" tactics.
Interestingly, Jotun makes no mention of his sisters in any way, despite them being imprisoned only slightly deeper in the same cave he lives in. There is no clear in-game reason.
Overview[]
Jotun is the first true boss the party encounters, and wields an arsenal of heavy-hitting attacks. Initially, he uses exclusively physical attacks - some non-elemental and others partly Earth-based - but he'll start using magical Bomb attacks as his HP falls. Despite below-average offensive stats (and slightly lower-than-average Evade), most of his moves inflict serious damage, especially if they also hit the party with Stagger. He's accompanied by some weak enemies, summoning more if they go down. When severely wounded, he'll also start buffing his offenses to hit even harder.
On higher difficulty levels, Jotun is better at inflicting Stagger, and his Eye Lasers can Dispel their targets. Once sufficiently damaged, his Ground Pound attack will also unleash an additional Earth skill on the player; either a powerful Quake or a multi-target Tremor. His buff skill also gives him several Brave stacks to further amplify his offensive threat.
While Jotun is certainly a force to be reckoned with, he is much more straightforward than later bosses, with little to fall back on besides raw power. His weaknesses allow the player to quickly wear him down with Poison or inflict severe damage with Wet + Ice combos.
Jotun has no elemental resistances, but is weak to Water, Bio and especially Ice. He has the standard boss immunity to Stun, Chill, Freeze, Syphon, Doom, and Instant Death; he also marginally resists all stat debuffs besides HP. With "More Foe Resistance" enabled, he loses his Water and Bio weaknesses while becoming resistant to Earth.
Defeating Jotun on Epic difficulty awards the "Pop Eye" Medal.

Battle Logic[]
The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.
Start of turn:
- Summon score ≥ 3;
- If fighting in the boss rush;
- If Foe Remix is enabled;
- If playing on Hard/Epic and Jotun is <49% HP → Summons an Obsidian Boulder
- Otherwise → Summons a Roasted Gloop;
- Otherwise;
- If playing on Hard/Epic and Jotun is <49% HP → Summons a Marble Boulder;
- Otherwise → Summons a Gem Idol;
- If Foe Remix is enabled;
- Otherwise;
- If Foe Remix is enabled;
- If playing on Hard/Epic and Jotun is <32% HP → Summons either a Blood Bat or a Bone Bat;
- Otherwise → Summons a Stone Idol, Gem Idol, Sandy Bush, Muddy Bush, Sand Slime or Water Slime;
- Otherwise;
- If playing on Hard/Epic and Jotun is <32% HP → Summons a Chunky Gloop;
- Otherwise → Summons a Stone Idol, Sandy Bush or Sand Slime;
- If Foe Remix is enabled;
- If fighting in the boss rush;
* Summon Score increases by 1 if no other foes are left (checked at the start of
Jotun's turn), and resets to 0 after summoning foes.
* Summoned foes will be at the same level as Jotun.
Action:
- If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Ground Pound (2/5), Eye Lasers (1/5), Bomb Throw (1/5),
Buff (1/5); - If Berserked → Body Slam;
- <39% HP and Jotun has less than a 15% Attack and Magic Attack buff → Buff;
- <39% HP → Ground Pound (1/4), Slam (1/4), Eye Lasers (1/4), Bomb Throw (1/4);
- <74% HP → Body Slam (1/5), Ground Pound (1/5), Slam (1/5), Eye Lasers (1/5), Bomb Throw (1/5);
- Otherwise → Triple Punch (1/3), Body Slam (1/3), Ground Pound (1/3).
* If <65% HP, Ground Pound will immediately be followed by either Tremor or Quake (same 1/2 chance for each) on Hard/Epic.
Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)
- 20% → Ground Pound.
* If <65% HP, Ground Pound will immediately be followed by either Tremor or Quake (same 1/2 chance for each) on Hard/Epic.
Strategy[]
Equipment[]
Jotun's weakness to Water can easily be exploited by the Sapphire Saint Sword, and the Bandit Blade Cat Toy. While the Black Fang is also fairly effective, the Wet condition caused by Water attacks will further amplify his serious Ice weakness. The Sapphire Saint also has an unleash that will deal heavy damage in comparison to the rest of the players' skills. The Druid Staff can be used to increase the Damage of Natalie's Toxic and consistently inflict either Poison (Pre v2) or Tired (v2) with her Normal Attack or Spectrum.
Defensively, focus on Earth and Bomb resistance, since Jotun only uses those two elements.
Battle[]
As the game's first real boss, Jotun is not terribly difficult. Try to keep the party's Defence and Magic Defence buffed (while Jotun initially uses physical attacks, he starts using strong magical attacks as his HP gets lower), then buff up Matt and/or NoLegs's Attack and Natalie's Magic Attack; Matt and NoLegs should focus on using Water-elemental attacks, while Natalie should use Ice. Having Matt do a Normal Attack with the Sapphire Saint to trigger the Torrent unleash; following up with Natalie's Ice (or possibly Iceshard) will deal heavy damage to Jotun.
Alternatively, the party can focus on Jotun's Bio weakness by hitting him with Nettle, Toxic, and Ivy; the latter should be used by NoLegs, as he lacks a natural Bio skill. The Poison status allow you to use your turns more freely to buff or heal while still having Jotun take serious amounts of damage. You can use the Dirt Boulder summon to inflict Tried, though it is costly, and after v2, Druid Staff also inflicts it, making Jotun go down a lot faster to Bio attacks.
Once Jotun gets low on HP, he'll start buffing his offenses, reusing it whenever the buffs get too low. If the player needs some breathing room, this behavior can be abused with NoLegs' Star Blast and The Destroyer, which will Dispel him and force him to spend his next turn rebuffing. However, neither of these can be used repeatedly, so they should be saved for an especially tight spot. The Dark Tooth's on-hit Dispel can be spammed more easily, but the status infliction is less consistent.
Keep in mind that the Sandstorm weather present in the fight mainly benefits Jotun, since the Dry inflicted on the players will increase his own Bomb damage, while the Dry inflicted on him will dampen his Ice weakness. Try to remove Dry with a Water attack before using any Ice attacks. If Weather Remix is enabled, you'll have to deal with an Earthquake instead; keep an eye on who suffers Stagger between turns and act accordingly. If Temper is available, you can use it on a Staggered ally to make them Brave, negating the risk of Jotun scoring a critical hit; Matt and NoLegs also appreciate the Attack buff.
The easiest way to capture Jotun is to get him to low HP (aim for 20% or so) and use the Putrid Worm summon; the massive Evade debuff will greatly increase his Capture score. Also, the player can obtain the Spelunking Hat after completing Indy's quest, and the Mini Drone from the Grand Gallery; there's also the Viking Fur from the Equipment Shop, but that's probably over the player's budget. Add some Good Luck and some hefty defensive buffs (7th Heaven works well here), and the player can capture Jotun before he's about to die. For more information, see Capturing.
Quotes[]
Like most other Epic Battle Fantasy 5 bosses, Jotun will speak to the party during the battle. He calls the party "monkeys" and "chimps" while referring to himself as "cyclops".
- This section is incomplete. You can help Epic Battle Fantasy Wiki by adding required information to it.
To do: Add what conditions cause Jotun to say these things
- "CYCLOPS REST NOW. MONKEY APES CAN GO HOME OR BECOME RED PAINT FOR CAVE!!" (Entering the battle)
- "PATHETIC APES BACK FOR MORE BEATING? RUN AWAY LIKE DINGOS LAST TIME!" (Fleeing and returning to the battle)
- "CYCLOPS SMASH PUNY BABOON MEN INTO DIRT!!" (First turn)
- "CYCLOPS IS CHAMPION!!! NO MONKEY CAN DEFEAT!! EAT FIST AND DIE!!"
- "MONKEY BONES CRUNCHY AND TASTY!! MAKE GOOD BUTTER FOR ROCK TOAST!!"
- "WHY STUPID CHIMPS DO NOT BREAK?! CYCLOPS NOT HIT HARD ENOUGH?!"
- "WHY IS CYCLOPS TIRED AND HURT?!"
- "CYCLOPS EYE HURT. NEED EYE DROPS."
- "CYCLOPS DIE WITH ALL REGRET... (Defeated)
Summon[]
- "CYCLOPS WORK HARD FOR TEAM!! UNDERSTAND STRENGTH OF NUMBERS NOW!"
- ―Jotun when summoned
Jotun can be captured and used as a summon. He throws a sea bomb at the foes before shooting them with his eye lasers, dealing five hits total. Each hit deals significant magical Bomb damage, and the lasers have a decent chance of inflicting Stun.
Jotun is a useful summon during the early game (especially in the Iron Fortress) as a source of potent Bomb damage prior to the acquisition of Lance. His Stun chance is decent enough to be useful, although it will usually fail against foes with any sort of Stun resistance. While his SP cost is quite high when first obtained, it will become more manageable as the player progresses; however, he'll usually become obsolete around the mid-game.

Trivia[]
- Jotun's name comes from Norse mythology; the Jötunn were a race of giants.
- Jotun's stomach and eye can be clicked on to make them jiggle. Repeatedly clicking on his stomach is an option to earn the "Squishy" Medal.
- If the player summons Jotun against Sol and Skadi, unique dialogue will be spoken by them.
- Concept art of Jotun appears in the Grand Gallery, depicting him alongside the Beholding Beast under the title "Uglies." The art depicts Jotun with clawless feet, a more pronounced seam around his eye, and crude weapons: a spiked club apparently made out of a tree trunk and a large boulder tied to his left hand like a whip or flail. The final version of Jotun goes unarmed, but the ropes tied around his left hand are likely a remnant of his original concept.
- The appendage under Jotun's kilt resembles a "dong," but Matt Roszak has stated that it's actually a tail because cyclopses have tails (maybe). He mentioned this while streaming a playthrough of EBF5 at 1:29:45.
- This, however, would make it inconsistent with the designs of Sol and Skadi, as they don't have visible tails.
