Kaladanda 5.png

The Kaladanda is a non-elemental staff available to Natalie in Epic Battle Fantasy 5.

Description

The Kaladanda is made of a very long and thin bone with some vertebrae-like spikes on the top and a head made from the skull of what looks like a small Zombie Hydra. A tattered strip of what appears to be Leather is wrapped around the top of the staff, just below the jaws of the skull.

Normal

With above-average defenses and massive offensive stats second only to the Obsidian Staff, the Kaladanda seems to offer Natalie both great power and endurance. Unfortunately, its self-applied Weaken and lack of an elemental boost reduce its effectiveness in an offensive build; instead, it is a powerful support tool.

The Kaladanda is a stupendous staff for debilitating foes, with Weapon-elemental skills (including its own Normal Attack counter) that can inflict Weaken and substantially debuff Defence. In other words, Rainbow Blast's multi-target version becomes a damaging Debilitate with no cooldown and Weaken thrown in. While it caps at 70% instead of 80% (assuming the player uses two pieces of debuff-boosting gear), the fact that it has no cooldown and applies Weaken (setting up Dark skills) makes it ludicrously powerful. Keep in mind that Natalie also has all of the important debuff skills, though a more generalist support build might consider the Beholding Eye.

In a sense, Kaladanda is the physical counterpart to the Obsidian Staff. While the Obsidian Staff applies Dry and Invisible in a single Normal Attack (courtesy of its unleash), allowing it to ramp up Lance's Bullet Hell, the Kaladanda finds itself more useful when paired with Twilight Tango and Demon Swords. Using status-changing Flairs can help it support different elemental offensives as well.

The Kaladanda resists Weaken, Tired, Confuse, Stagger, Curse and Bad Luck. All of these become an immunity at Level 5, but it does not protect against self-inflicted Weaken.

With good boosts to Defence, Magic Defence, and HP, the Alt Kaladanda makes Natalie quite a bit more durable. Its Attack and Magic Attack are serviceable enough to give her attacks and heals respectable power; however, the player will have to deal with automatic Tired. Its Weapon-elemental skills can inflict Tired on foes while debuffing their Attack and sometimes unleashing Bones; it can also summon a Skeleton Hand between turns to give Good Luck to the entire party.

Ultimately, Alt Kaladanda is less effective for tanking than Alt Wrecking Rod or Alt Oak Staff, yet has the stats and on-hit effects to merit a support role if needed.

The Alt Kaladanda resists Weaken, Tired, Confuse, Stagger, Curse and Bad Luck, becoming immune to all of them at Level 5. This does not prevent its self-inflicted Tired from activating, however.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Kaladanda is found in the lever puzzle area at the Mystic Woods; the chest is revealed by arranging the levers in a specific formation seen on the walls of Indy's Cave.

Trivia

  • The Kaladanda can be considered part of a subset of bone-themed weapons in EBF5, along with the Human Skull, The Deceased, the Club of Withering and the Spine Snapper. Other than their visual appearance, their common themes include being focused around debuffs, being able to inflict either Instant Death or Doom (be it directly or through bonus/auto skills), and being Non-elemental (except for the Spine Snapper).
  • In addition to the above, the Kaladanda could be specifically considered the magical counterpart to the Club of Withering. Both weapons have similar aesthetics and stats, as well as the ability to debuff the defensive stat opposite to their wielder's favored offense; the Kaladanda is used by the magic specialist Natalie and can debuff Defence, while the Club of Withering is used by the physically-focused Matt and debuffs Magic Defence.
  • The Kaladanda is an object from Hindi mythology, being the staff of Yama; it was capable of killing anyone whom it struck, with no way of avoiding their death.
  • A staff resembling the Kaladanda can be seen under the table in the second potion shop in the original Epic Battle Fantasy.
