Despite lacking a status boost, the Lightning Shard has a strong claim to being Matt's best sword for a status build; coupled with the Captain's Hat and either the Flame Suit or the Captain's Coat, it can easily immobilize whole waves of non-resistant foes or passively spread a status of the player's choice with the proper Flair. Outside of this niche, however. it's completely outclassed by the Golden Axe, which has higher Attack, a much stronger unleash, and a makeshift Accuracy boost (among other things) via Good Luck and Bad Luck applications. While its luck-based nature means that players shouldn't be over-reliant on this bonus, the Alt Lightning Shard can certainly grant a good amount of extra turns in an extended fight without lowering Matt's stats like the Alt Dragon's Feather. Its on-hit status is useful for supporting Earth-focused allies like Alt Desert Scorpion Lance or Alt Fairy Bow Anna; alternatively, Matt can exploit it himself with his Earth skills (especially if he gets Haste). Additionally, it's the only Alt sword to enhance Thunder attacks; Matt should learn Surge if he wants to make the most of this trait.

Lightning Shard

The Lightning Shard is a Thunder-elemental sword available for Matt in Epic Battle Fantasy 5.

Description

The Lightning Shard appears to be carved from a formation of yellow crystals embedded in brown stone. Its blade is made of a long, polished crystal that seems to fuse into the brown stone forming the guard; the guard is covered with small yellow crystals, including a large crystal at the center. The hilt is wrapped in white cloth, leaving a bit of brown stone exposed to act as the pommel.

Normal

The Lightning Shard provides below-average Attack, above-average Magic Attack, and moderate Accuracy. It is capable of unleashing Thunder with single-target weapon-elemental attacks, but this won't do significant damage, even with the sword's Thunder boost. Its Slicing Cyclone counter is unique among swords for its multi-target nature, allowing Matt to passively spread status conditions with the use of relevant Flairs; even without them, he has a decent chance to inflict Stun that can be further amplified with Unleash for single targets.

Its Stun chance isn't as high as that of Thor's Hammer or the Neon Lightbulb, but it compensates with better multi-target application thanks to its counter. To maximize its effectiveness, Matt can throw a Brick to give himself Target without having to Defend himself; alternatively, NoLegs can use Cherish on himself while Matt's other ally Defends themselves with the Heart Pendant.

Outside of its status-spreading niche, the Lightning Shard suffers from being a magic-leaning weapon in the hands of the physically-inclined Matt. It's completely outclassed by the Golden Axe, which has higher Attack, substantial HP, a much stronger unleash, and a makeshift Accuracy boost (among other things) via Good Luck and Bad Luck applications.

The Lightning Shard resists Thunder, Ice, and Stun, with the latter becoming an immunity at Level 5.

Equip Remix

The Alt Lightning Shard has above-average offenses and minor boosts to Accuracy and Evade. It gives Thunder and Earth skills a boost, with Weapon-elemental skills having a good chance to make foes Heavy while occasionally unleashing a Big Spark for extra damage; however, it's most notable for its high chance to grant Haste between turns.

While its luck-based nature means that players shouldn't be over-reliant on this bonus, the Alt Lightning Shard can certainly grant a good amount of extra turns in an extended fight without lowering Matt's stats like the Alt Dragon's Feather. Its on-hit status is useful for supporting Earth-focused allies like Alt Desert Scorpion Lance or Alt Fairy Bow Anna; alternatively, Matt can use it to empower his own Earth skills (especially if he gets Haste). Additionally, it's the only Alt sword to enhance Thunder attacks; Matt should learn Surge if he wants to make the most of this trait.

The Alt Lightning Shard resists Thunder, Earth, and Stun, becoming immune to the latter at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Lightning Shard is found inside a chest in No Man's Land, on a small rock island accessible by pier and guarded by a battle that appears as a Blue Creep.

Trivia

 • The Lightning Shard's design is a recolor of the Blood Blade from Epic Battle Fantasy 4. Incidentally, this means that both of Matt's Thunder-based swords in EBF5 are based on the designs of weapons he used in previous games.
 • Much like the Heartstopper, the Lightning Shard's flavor text describes it as being forged by lightning hitting the earth.
