The Mage Bird is a foe in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4. In EBF3, it is found in several areas, primarily Rock Lake and Volcano Peak. In EBF4, most Mage Birds are found in the upper regions of the Temple of Godcat, although some can also be found in the Lost Ruins of Lankyroot Jungle.

Appearance[]

The Mage Bird is a white bird with a short pink beak and pink feet with three clawed toes. It wears a long black cloth over its head, with two tassels draping over its front and more dangling behind its back; the overall effect gives it the appearance of a nun wearing a habit. Unlike other Birds, it lacks tail feathers, instead having what appears to be another tassel of the cloth on its head dangling where they would be.

Overview[]

As usual for its species, the Mage Bird has high Evade but low HP and several elemental weaknesses, and thus can easily fall victim to high-Accuracy attacks. Unlike most Birds, it generally forgoes physical attacks in favor of a litany of magic spells that vary depending on the game.

Mage Birds tend to be immune to Earth and Holy, but weak to Thunder and Wind.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]

In EBF3, the Mage Bird is a mid-tier foe that can use a variety of elemental spells, including Iceshard, Fireball, Thunderbolt, and Toxic. This gives it diverse offensive potential to go with its above-average Magic Attack, though the party can usually take it down before it can make use of it. Syphon is particularly effective for shutting down the Mage Bird's magic, forcing it to resort to an unimpressive physical attack. Berserk is also viable; even with the power boost, the Mage Bird can't hit very hard without its spells.

The Mage Bird is weak to Thunder, Wind, and Dark, but is immune to both Earth and Holy; as such, Plasmawave, Shockwave, Thunderbolt, and Pulsar are quite effective at taking it down. It's also vulnerable to Syphon and Accuracy debuffs, which can shut it down entirely or leave it hard-pressed to land a hit.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Mage Bird is an endgame foe that specializes in supporting its allies or hampering the party. It can manipulate the flow of time itself to Stun a player and severely debuff their Evade; alternatively, it can accelerate an ally to give them a big buff to Accuracy and Evade. Like the Mage Dog, it can drain a good amount of MP from a single target; on higher difficulty levels, the drain increases to the point where the victim will barely have anything left to perform skills unless they restore their MP with items or the on-hit effect of specific weapons.

Fortunately, the Mage Bird can't use any of its spells if afflicted with Berserk or Syphon, limiting it to minor physical attacks. It has a high Syphon resistance, but the player can reliably afflict it with Berserk to make it into a pathetically weak foe despite the damage boost.

The Mage Bird has a multitude of weakness, being vulnerable to Poison, Wind, Ice, and especially Thunder; on the other hand, it's immune to Dark, Earth, and Holy. Attacks such as Spark Arrow, Iceberg, and Airwave are quite useful against this foe, but Poison Gas and Thunder Storm can do away with large groups more efficiently. It's also susceptible to Evade debuffs, which negate one of its best defensive assets.

If "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, the Mage Bird becomes resistant to Fire, Ice, Thunder, Dispel, Doom, and Instant Death.

Trivia[]

  • In EBF4, the Mage Bird's map sprite has its color palette swapped; while it appears on the map as a black bird wearing a white cloth (similar to the Mage Dog), the in-battle sprite is white with a black cloth.
