Matt & Lance with the Ninja Hood.

The Ninja Hood is a male hat available in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 4. Its armor counterpart is the Ninja Gear and its female armor counterpart is the Ninja Skirt. It was succeeded by the Basket Hat (and on a lesser aesthetic level, the Surgical Mask) in Epic Battle Fantasy 5.

Description

The Ninja Hood is a black hood with a similarly-colored piece of cloth that covers the lower half of Matt or Lance's face, leaving only their eyes and part of their hair visible. In EBF4, it gains a white symbol on the forehead, and Matt's version has a visible knot at the back.

In both of its appearances, the Ninja Hood has poor defenses for a hat, but it also grants the wearer a good amount of Accuracy and Evade. It also tends to make them resistant to having their stats lowered - either by rendering them immune to the relevant debuffs or by negating Weaken and Tired - but it has no special effects beyond that.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Ninja Hood is overall the least bulky male hat in the game; its Defence is the lowest of any hat, and its Magic Defence is tied for third-lowest with the Captain Hat, Officer Hat, and Pilot Goggles, only being higher than that of the Genji Helmet and the Gas Mask. On the other hand, its Evade is second to none, and its Accuracy is only beaten by the Pilot Goggles.

The Ninja Hood's wearer is resistant to having his Accuracy, Attack, and Evade lowered. The hat becomes fully immune to these debuffs at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Ninja Hood has poor Defence and Magic Defence, being tied with the Officer's Hat, the Death Mask, and the Casual Cap for the lowest non-zero values in both stats. However, it has the second-best Evade of any headgear (with the Headband and Casual Cap tied for first) and the third-best Accuracy (only beaten by the Cowboy Hat and the aforementioned two hats). It has no special Equipment Effects.

The Ninja Hood resists Weaken, Tired, and Thunder, becoming immune to the former two at Level 5.

Adventure Story

The Ninja Hood is one of the hats available in Adventure Story, providing a moderate bonus to Matt's attack power and magic. This makes it an effective offensive hat for players who use a mixture of melee and magic attacks.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

The Ninja Hood is found in Vegetable Forest, in a chest along the northern shore of the river on the same screen as Heinkel. To reach the chest, cross the second bridge blocked by a battle appearing as a Kitten Soldier on the previous screen and go to the right.

Trivia

  • Interestingly, if the party leader is wearing a Ninja Hood, it will show them wearing a straw hat in the overworld rather than a hood. This is similar to how real-life ninjas were said to hide, by disguising themselves as rice farmers and other citizens.
  • The symbol on top of the EBF4 Ninja Hood partially resembles a Chinese character.
  • The Surgical Mask Flair has a similar aesthetic resemblance to the Ninja Hood as a mouth-obscuring clothing, although the equipment are otherwise completely different.
