"What's this? I sense an ambush up ahead... Does he think I can't see him? I think it's the cat that's been stealing my trash. Well I've had a few practice battles, I bet I can take on a cat now!"
―Matt, upon seeing NoLegs, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

NoLegs is a miniboss and the first player character to be fought in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. He's found in Hope Harbor, on the piers east of Matt's house. After NoLegs is defeated, he will join Matt in his quest to find the source of the earthquake that knocked out the power in his house.

Appearance

NoLegs looks exactly as he does as a playable character: a blue-furred cat with beady blue eyes and no limbs. He wields NoLegs's starting gear: the Knight's Helmet, the Steel Buckler, and the Heroic Armor.

NoLegs is first seen hiding behind a rock near the Hope Harbor pier, apparently planning to ambush Matt. His attempt is ruined by his tendency to occasionally peek out, as well as his tail being clearly visible when he's "hiding;" simply walk over and interact with him to begin the fight.

Overview

As the first miniboss in EBF5, NoLegs is a little tougher than the foes Matt has fought up to this point; nevertheless, he's still not terribly threatening. He uses non-elemental sword attacks, one of which hits multiple times, and he can also raise his shield to give himself a turn of Defend (and a few Brave stacks on higher Difficulty levels). He also has very high Evade, allowing him to dodge more frequently than the average foe.

NoLegs resists Thunder and is completely immune to Stun, Chill, Freeze, Doom, and Instant Death; while most of these are irrelevant to Matt (except for Chill and possibly Freeze), the status immunity will be a recurring sight for boss-level foes. On the other hand, NoLegs is weak to Fire and Water; the latter is especially notable for making NoLegs immediately Surrender if it is exploited.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • Every 3rd turn → Defend;
  • Otherwise → Normal Attack (1/2), Swordplay (1/2).

Additionally, NoLegs will immediately Surrender when he gets hit with a Water-elemental attack.

Unlike most other foes, NoLegs doesn't get a counter when Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled.

Strategy

If you hit NoLegs with a Water attack, he'll surrender automatically (and you'll earn the Cat Person medal). It is recommended that you use the Water Slime summon (which can be obtained in the previous battle) instead of Geyser, as it is guaranteed to hit NoLegs without killing him.

If the player wishes to fight NoLegs "properly," they will have to defeat him without any Water attacks; in this case, use Magma to hit the cat's Fire weakness (unless More Foe Resistance is on). While the battle itself is quite easy regardless, NoLegs's high Evade may drag things out a bit, despite the Ultra Pro 9000X's high Accuracy. When he raises his shield, you can continue attacking or take the opportunity to heal or buff; Protect is an obvious choice, but Temper can also be used to speed things along.

Trivia

  • NoLegs's resistances correspond to the Knight's Helmet, being weak to Water and Fire, but resistant to Thunder.
  • As with all of the player fights, looking at NoLegs in the bestiary will show whatever equipment he currently has instead of what he wore during the fight.
