The Obsidian Staff, known simply as Obsidian before EBF5, is a Dark-elemental staff available for Natalie in Epic Battle Fantasy 3 and 5.
Description[]
As its name suggests, the Obsidian Staff is made of obsidian, a black volcanic glass. It has two spikes on the base and an elaborate head made of interlocking spikes; the latter also has two orange orbs with a faint glow. In EBF3, the orbs are next to each other on the front of the staff's head, framed by its uppermost crook. In EBF5, one of the orbs is moved to the back of the head, and both become purple if the staff is equipped while Natalie wears the Dark Gown.
The Obsidian is usually a strong offensive staff that empowers Natalie's Dark skills while giving her weapon-elemental skills the ability to make foes more vulnerable to magic attacks. Its elemental resistances usually include Dark and/or Fire.
Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]
The Obsidian has a high Magic Attack bonus to give Natalie's spells more punch - especially the Dark skills that benefit from its elemental boost - as well as a slight Defence bonus to help her poor physical bulk. It can drastically debuff enemy Magic Defence with a Normal Attack, and gains the ability to counter with said skill once fully upgraded. Its Unleash significantly reduces the victim's Attack, which can be helpful for physically-inclined foes.
The Obsidian's best assets are its ability to boost some of Natalie's strongest spells (including her Black Hole Limit Break) and apply free debuffs that both she and Lance can easily make use of. However, it faces competition if the player is not actively making use of Dark attacks; the Crystal Staff and the Nimbus have identical Magic Attack and useful stat boosts (MP and HP respectively), while the Dark Tooth offers more raw damage at the cost of Natalie's defenses. It's also obtained in a late-game area with many Dark-resistant foes; on the other hand, Natalie can get a lot of mileage from its resistance.
The Obsidian resists Dark, up to 50% at Level 5.
Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]
The Obsidian was intended to return in Epic Battle Fantasy 4, but was cut during the development process. Compared to the Cat Costume (another piece of dummied-out gear), the Obsidian's stats are nearly complete, lacking only forging data. It would have been mostly unchanged from EBF3, but with additional perks of resisting Curse (which becomes an immunity when fully forged) and increasing Natalie's Magic Defence at higher levels; on the other hand, its on-hit Magic Defence debuff is slightly weaker and not guaranteed to land, even at Level 5.
Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]
Normal[]
The Obsidian Staff provides the single highest Magic Attack bonus of any staff, along with a moderate Attack bonus; unfortunately, this comes at the cost of a moderate penalty to both defenses. Its weapon-elemental attacks can inflict Dry on hit, and single-target skills can unleash Invisibility to make the target twice as weak to magic while being immune to physical attacks.
Compared to other "glass cannon" weapons (like the Honjo Masamune or the Soul Eater), the Obsidian Staff provides a less exaggerated boost to Natalie's offence, but it also has much milder penalties and potent support abilities. With this staff in hand, a single Normal Attack can instantly triple the damage of any magical Bomb or Fire follow-ups; this allows Natalie to set up Lance to deal massive damage with Bullet Hell, Air Strike, or even Nuke. On the other hand, the Obsidian Staff's massive offensive output and boost to Dark skills allows Natalie to devastate the opposition with Dark Pulse, Pulsar, or even Black Hole if the party sets her up with Magic Defence debuffs and Weaken.
The Obsidian Staff resists Fire and Syphon, with the latter becoming an immunity at Level 5.
Equip Remix[]
The Alt Obsidian Staff has good offensive stats and minor boosts to Accuracy and Evade. It empowers Natalie's Dark skills and gives her Weapon-elemental skills a chance to apply Burn and unleash Unholy Ritual for significant magical Dark damage and possible Curse. This makes it equally effective at dealing immediate damage (especially against Dark-weak foes), and chipping away at enemy defenses over time.
Compared to the Alt Shooting Star (which has identical Magic Attack and a Dark boost), the Alt Obsidian Staff is better suited for an unleash-based build, allowing Natalie to repeatedly hammer foes with Unholy Ritual; pairing it with the Alt Peace Badge lets it inflict Weaken to further empower its unleash and whittle down the victim's offensive stats along with their defenses. Alternatively, it can be used for its immunity to two elements, particularly in the endgame; using it with the Alt Dark Gown will give Natalie a significant Dark absorption and great magical power, especially with Dark skills.
The Alt Obsidian Staff resists Fire and Dark, becoming immune to both at Level 5.
Epic Battle Fantasy 3[]
The Obsidian is found inside a chest in Volcano Peak, on a small island behind a Beholder and right next to Curly.

Trivia[]
- The roles of the Obsidian Staff and the Dark Tooth are reversed between EBF3 and EBF5. In EBF3, the Obsidian Staff is a reasonably strong Dark-elemental staff, while the Dark Tooth had unmatched magic power in exchange for making Natalie more fragile. In EBF5, the Dark Tooth is a standard Dark-elemental staff, while the Obsidian Staff now provides a massive amount of power but lowers Natalie's defenses.
