PHOENIX is a miniboss and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5 introduced in the v2 update. It is found in a secret room in the caves below the Wild Tropics, becoming first accessible once the player gets The Hammer.

Appearance[]

PHOENIX is a small bird depicted in the style of 8-bit video game graphics. It has an orange body, a black beak and legs, and red-and-yellow wings. Its eyes are either yellow with red pupils or pure red with small yellow markings around them.

PHOENIX's arcade room is part of the subterranean caves found in the Wild Tropics. The arcade room's most notable feature is the lava pool and the presences of ores, sprites, and a golem. Columns (presumably for support) are also present, indicating that this room may have existed for some time.

Overview[]

PHOENIX can slash a single target for non-elemental physical damage, but it also has randomly-targeting magical attacks that deal significant damage while debuffing the party's defences and applying Burn or Doom. On harder difficulty levels, the debuffs have higher infliction rates and the status effects become Scorch and Instant Death. Like all Arcade foes, its elemental attacks only have a 25% elemental degree, making resistances less useful.

However, PHOENIX is most notable for its Immortality skill, which it casts every turn as a free action to give itself a stack of Auto-Revive. If killed with the status, it automatically uses its Resurrection skill to recover all of its health and give itself a Burn for a small heal over time. While Auto-Revive can be easily removed with Dispel, PHOENIX can also revive its brethren if they're killed or captured, also giving itself Regen to make it even harder to kill. As a result, it's important to Dispel and immediately kill all instances of PHOENIX at once; if that's infeasible, the survivors must be prevented from reapplying their Auto-Revive effect.

Stun, Freeze, Syphon and Berserk can all prevent PHOENIX from using Immortality; the first two prevent it from taking a turn, while the latter two simply remove it from its combat pattern. Unfortunately, PHOENIX is extremely resistant to all but Berserk, necessitating a dedicated status build or a party that can handle its powered-up Talons spam. Morale is useful to stop its spells from debuffing the party's defences, and Death resistance is important on higher difficulties to prevent it from instantly killing players with its Bird Song.

PHOENIX absorbs Fire and Dark, is immune to Earth, Doom, and Instant Death, and greatly resists Stun, Freeze, Chill, Weaken, Tired, Curse, Bad Luck, and Syphon. However, it is weak to Thunder, Ice, Bio, Water, Wind and Holy. It also resists all stat debuffs aside from HP, especially Magic Attack and Accuracy.

With "More Foe Resistance" on, PHOENIX becomes neutral to Wind and Holy while its Thunder weakness becomes an absorption. Its resistance to Attack and Evade debuffs also increases significantly.

Enters battle with 1x Auto-Revive, and 3x Burn.

PHOENIX gains up to 24% extra Attack, Magic Attack, HP and Accuracy depending on how many optional bosses have been killed, medals awarded and monster cards obtained:

After level 23, PHOENIX gains a 5% boost to Attack and Magic Attack, and a 2.5% boost to HP and Accuracy on every level-up (these boosts stack additively, acting as a multiplier). This boost caps out at level 36.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

1st Action

  • If Syphoned or Berserked, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Flee;
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Talons;
  • If a PHOENIX has been killed, or catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Regenerate;
  • Otherwise → Talons (1/3), Fireballs (1/3), Bird Song (1/3).

2nd Action

  • If not Syphoned or Berserked → Immortality.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% → Talons.

Additionally, if PHOENIX dies while having Auto-Revive, it'll automatically use Resurrection to revive itself at full HP.

Summon[]

PHOENIX can be captured and used as a summon; it can also be randomly called by the Alt Pixel Popper. It uses Immortality on the entire front line, bringing dead players back to life with about a third of their HP and giving living players several turns of Auto-Revive.
