"That squid certainly ain't no kid, it's as big as a house!"
Anna upon seeing a Pink Squid

The Pink Squid is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is primarily found along the Rainbow River, though it occasionally can be found in the Frozen Valley or The Rapture.

Appearance[]

The Pink Squid resembles the Giant Squid from EBF3, with an assortment of arms used as "feet", a pair of long, thin tentacles, two large, mildly unnerving blue eyes flanking its tubular mouth, and a pear-shaped mantle with tiny fins near the base. A large silver fork is embedded in the front of its head, but this doesn't seem to bother it.

As its name implies, the Pink Squid has a rosy coloration; unlike other EBF5 Squids, it lacks spikes on its tentacles, giving them the closest resemblance to real-world squid tentacles.

Overview[]

The Pink Squid is a heavy hitter with a bevy of magic attacks, most of which are multi-target or randomly targeting. Many of them are Water attacks that can inflict Wet and Evade debuffs, but it also has a Dark attack that can make the victim Invisible while severely debuffing their Accuracy. It also uses an Ice attack with a chance to Freeze; while the status chance is comically low, the damage is serviceable even without the high likelihood of the party being Wet at the time. Even death won't stop it from getting one last swing in; it has a modest chance to make each party member Stuffed, preventing them from using Food for three turns.

On Hard or Epic difficulty, the Pink Squid gets a stronger debuff on Blow Bubbles and better status chances on Bubble Shot and its on-death Stuff effect. It also gains the ability to cast Sea Bomb, which hits one player for devastating magical Bomb damage and a fairly high chance to Dispel their buffs.

For all its power, the Pink Squid is severely crippled by Syphon and Berserk; either status will limit it to a basic (albeit multi-target) physical attack with its tentacles. Additionally, like all Squids in EBF5, it will lose its tentacles if hit with a powerful attack (over 25% of its maximum HP in one blow) and will be forced to Surrender if subsequently afflicted with Syphon or Berserk. Its Evade is a bit lower than average, so hitting it will be easier than normal; try to catch it or make it Surrender in order to avoid its final Stuffing attempt.

The Pink Squid absorbs Water and resists Wind, but is weak to Thunder, Ice, Earth, and Bio. It also has relatively limited status effect resistances; it strongly resists Stun, Chill, Freeze, and Accuracy debuffs and has good resistance to Doom and Instant Death, but otherwise can be afflicted and debuffed with the effects of your choice. Activating "More Foe Resistance" makes it fully immune to Wind, nearly immune to Doom and Instant Death, neutral to Ice and Bio, and significantly less vulnerable to Earth; additionally, it gains a significant resistance to having its offenses and defenses debuffed.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned or Berserked, and the Squid has lost its arms → Surrender;
  • If catch score >55, all players are Lovable, and the Squid has lost its arms → Bubble Blast (1/2), Ice Storm (1/2);
  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Tentacle Hit;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Tentacle Hit (1/2), Blow Bubbles (1/2);
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Tentacle Hit;
  • <49% HP and the Squid has lost its arms → Ink Blob (1/5), Bubble Shot (1/5), Blow Bubbles (1/5);
    • If playing on Hard/Epic → Sea Bomb (2/20), Bubble Blast (3/20), Ice Storm (3/20);
    • Otherwise → Bubble Blast (1/5), Ice Storm (1/5);
  • <49% HP → Ink Blob (1/6), Tentacle Hit (1/6), Bubble Shot (1/6), Blow Bubbles (1/6);
    • If playing on Hard/Epic → Sea Bomb (2/24), Bubble Blast (3/24), Ice Storm (3/24);
    • Otherwise → Bubble Blast (1/6), Ice Storm (1/6);
  • If the Squid has lost its arms → Ink Blob (3/10), Bubble Shot (3/10), Blow Bubbles (3/10);
    • If playing on Hard/Epic → Sea Bomb (2/80), Bubble Blast (3/80), Ice Storm (3/80);
    • Otherwise → Bubble Blast (1/20), Ice Storm (1/20);
  • Otherwise → Ink Blob (1/4), Tentacle Hit (1/4), Bubble Shot (1/4), Blow Bubbles (1/4).

Before the v2 update, the Pink Squid would not always Surrender when Berserked after it had lost its arms.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 50% and not Syphoned → Sea Bomb.

Additionally, the Squid will use Stuff when it's killed.

Summon[]

The Pink Squid can be captured and used as a summon; additionally, it has a chance to be randomly summoned by the Captain's Coat. It uses a powered-up version of Ink Blob on a single foe, dealing a large amount of accurate magical Dark damage with a high chance of inflicting Invisible and the maximum possible Accuracy debuff. This gives it some offensive and defensive applications, although the Chunky Gloop summon is a far more cost-efficient source of Invisible.

Trivia[]

  • Anna's line on seeing a Pink Squid is a direct reference to the Inklings from the Splatoon franchise.
  • The Pink Squid share many similarities to the River Squid from EBF4; both share a similar body shape, specialize in Water attacks, and have a devastating magic attack that is used only on the harder difficulties.
