- "WHY HAVE MORTALS ENTERED THE REALM OF POSEIDON, THE SEA GOD?! ONLY ONE REASON IS POSSIBLE - TO CAUSE GENOCIDE AGAINST MY CHILDREN!"
- ―Poseidon's opening line when fought, Epic Battle Fantasy 5
Poseidon is a boss in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. He can be found at the end of the Frozen Valley, blocking the path across Rainbow River to reach Redpine Town.
Appearance[]
Poseidon is a golem shaped like a crude human skull, with a triangular hole for a nose and oblong eye holes with pale blue dots of light. His body appears to be made of two separate pieces of light grey stone, with the gap between them forming a cavernous mouth dotted with white crystal "fangs." The bottom of his body is covered in dark brown mud and the top of his body is adorned with blue crystals and various forms of sea life; orange sponges, pink coral, and a few strands of dark green seaweed. The visible side of his head is dotted with small patches of green algae.
As Poseidon takes damage, his "teeth" and the objects on his head begin to break off, his eye lights grow brighter, and water builds up at the bottom of his eye holes like tears. When badly damaged, he begins "crying" water as his eye lights become even brighter, revealing tiny, pupil-like black dots at their center to give him a vaguely surprised/pained expression.
Poseidon's design hints towards most of the different elements at his command: Ice (blue crystals), Water (coral and sponges), Holy (white crystals), Earth (mud and his stone body in general) and Bio (seaweed).
Personality[]
He is very protective of the ocean and its denizens, considering them to be his children; conversely, he has little love for humans and other "mortals," seeing them as a threat to his domain with their fishing and water pollution. Unfortunately, Poseidon's response to this threat is to kill anyone who crosses his path with extreme prejudice, even if they're trying to save the world as a whole.
He also has a significant ego, boasting of his power and being convinced that he will be remembered as a hero in the annals of history; if Captured and summoned in battle, he will bemoan his fate as being worse than death. As violent and prideful as he is, Poseidon is also rather well-spoken, giving various eloquent rants and threats to the party as they do battle.
Overview[]
Poseidon is revered as the god of the seas, with many structures in the Frozen Valley and Rainbow River being built in his honor (including the Stone Heads used to open the northern gate to the valley).
Poseidon wields a broad array of elemental attacks, both physical and magical. He mainly uses Ice and Water, but also has Holy, Earth, Bio, and Wind skills at his disposal. This range of elements comes with an equally diverse array of status effects, including Wet, Chill (which can easily become Freeze given his many Ice attacks), Stagger, Poison, Weaken, Syphon, Dispel, and even Instant Death (Hard/Epic difficulty only). He also summons Ores on every turn to support him with their suicidal buffs and attacks. When low on HP, he'll buff his defences and even cast Tsunami on higher difficulties.

Battle Logic[]
The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.
Start of turn:
- Summons a Quartz, Sapphire, Zircon or Peridot Ore; if Foe Remix is enabled, can summon any of the 7 Ores (ie, adds Topaz, Ruby and Amethyst Ore to the summon pool);
- Has a 1/3 chance to summon a second Ore, this becomes guaranteed once <49% HP.
- Level of the summoned ores depends on Poseidon's HP;
- <29% HP: Poseidon's level + 3.
- <59% HP: Poseidon's level + 2.
- <89% HP: Poseidon's level + 1.
- Otherwise: same level as Poseidon.
- Level of the summoned ores depends on Poseidon's HP;
- Has a 1/3 chance to summon a second Ore, this becomes guaranteed once <49% HP.
Action:
- If playing on Hard/Epic, <39% HP and hasn't used Tsunami yet → Tsunami;
- If Berserked → Magic*;
- <19% HP and Poseidon's Defence and Magic Defence buffs are below 25% and 45% respectively → Defend;
- <39% HP → Dispelling Wind (1/5), Disabling Roar (1/5), Ram (1/5), Eye Lasers (1/5), Magic* (1/5);
- <74% HP → Dispelling Wind (1/6), Disabling Roar (1/6), Chilling Breath (1/6), Eye Lasers (1/6), Magic* (1/6);
- Otherwise → Magic* (1/3);
- If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Chilling Breath (2/3);
- Otherwise → Spit Water (1/3), Chilling Breath (1/3).
*"Magic" has a 66% chance to choose best elemental spell based on active party's elemental resistance between Torrent, Tundra, Quake and Overgrowth, and otherwise randomly picks one of the four to use.
Unlike most other foes, Poseidon doesn't get a counter when Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled.
Strategy[]
Equipment[]
Having maximum resistance to Water, Ice and Holy will make the fight quite a bit easier, as this will make you immune to most attacks from Poseidon. Secondary resistances to Wind, Earth, and Bio are also recommended. It's recommended to equip Ice weapons as they give you Ice/Water resistance and boost the damage of Ice spells, which is one of his weaknesses.
As for status effects, it is recommended to have Death resistance against Tsunami, and Dispel resistance against Poseidon's wind attack and Quartz Ores.
Battle[]
During the battle Poseidon constantly summons Ores (which gradually gain extra levels as the boss loses health), specifically Peridot, Quartz, Sapphire and Zircon ones. They are relatively weak and won't deal too much damage, but Quartz Ore can heal and Zircon Ore can buff Magic Defence, so they should be killed as fast as possible. Lance is quite effective here because of his Bomb spells, which is the weakness of every ore and Poseidon.
As usual, keep your Defence and Magic Defence buffs up to decrease damage from what you're not immune to (his great elemental variety means it may not be possible to resist all of his attacks). When low on HP, Poseidon will start using his Ram attack, dealing high physical damage to both the front players and the backup.
On Hard and Epic difficulties, he'll use the Tsunami Limit Break once when at <39% HP (which is the point at which his sprite changes to show him crying), which deals a high amount of Water damage to the whole team and has a chance to kill instantly (on Epic the chance is greatly increased, so immunity to the status, Bless or Auto-Revive are recommended). At <19% HP, he'll start buffing his Defence and Magic Defence if they're low, and on higher difficulties this will grant him Haste, which allows him to attack on the same turn. Try to either invert his buffs (with Red/Yellow Flybot summons) or Dispel them, and deal damage (or capture) in the same turn.
Summon[]
- "WHAT A PITIFUL EXISTENCE FOR A GOD TO BE REDUCED TO!! DEATH WOULD BE MORE FITTING THAN SUCH SLAVERY!!"
- ―Poseidon when summoned, Epic Battle Fantasy 5
Poseidon can be captured to be used as a summon. It casts a powered up version of Matt's Typhoon on every foe.

Trivia[]
- Poseidon is named after the god of the oceans in Greek mythology. Some of the party's comments during his battle express confusion and dismay about Poseidon's inhuman appearance (the mythological Poseidon was usually depicted as a man with a beard and a trident).
- Ironically, Poseidon's brother is named after a Roman god instead of a Greek one, and while the mythological Poseidon/Neptune did have siblings, Hephaestus/Vulcan was not one of them.
- Poseidon bears a significant resemblance to the Golem boss of Adventure Story.
