The Putrid Worm is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is typically encountered in the Wild Tropics.
Appearance[]
The Putrid Worm is a small, caterpillar-like creature with a pale green underside and a lime green back. It has large emerald eyes, matching the color of the spots and stripes on its body. A pair of thick antennae with pink tips protrude from its head, and its back is dotted with thin white spines or hairs.
The Putrid Worm has several variants, distinguished by the teeth in their mouths:
- Four small fangs protruding from the upper lip.
- A single square tooth protruding from the middle of the lower lip.
- One triangular fang protruding from the upper lip.
- Two triangular fangs protruding from the lower lip.
- One triangular fang protruding from the corner of the lower lip.
Overview[]
Putrid Worms have a few weak physical attacks (including one part-Bio attack), but are only really notable for their ability to sharply debuff Evade and inflict a bit of Poison. While they can give themselves Regen, their HP is too low for this to matter much, especially since their Evade is a bit below-average. All of their skills have a chance to summon more of their kind unless they're fighting alongside Anna in No Man's Land.
On higher difficulty levels, Putrid Worms gain stronger status infliction abilities; their Sting inflicts more Poison stacks, their Spider Web inflicts Bad Luck along with the Evade drop, and their Bite has a high chance to saddle the victim with Virus. Their defensive skill also buffs their Evade, and they begin battle with a few stacks of Poison on themselves, allowing them to passively regain HP for a while. The chance of their skills summoning backup also increases quite a bit.
Putrid Worms absorb Bio, but are weak to Earth and especially Fire. Multi-target Fire skills like Flame Burst and Fire Storm work exceptionally well, but a quick shot of Tremor or Magma will do the trick when they are first encountered. They're also very vulnerable to Poison and Virus, but this works in their favor, given their Bio absorption. If "More Foe Resistance" is enabled, they also absorb Water.

Battle Logic[]
The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.
Action
- If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
- If Berserked → Bite;
- If Syphoned → Sting (1/2), Bite (1/2);
- Otherwise;
- If the selected target has at least a 10% Evade debuff → Bite (1/2);
- If the Putrid Worm has Regen → Sting (1/2);
- Otherwise → Sting (1/4), Curl Up (1/4);
- Otherwise → Bite (1/4), Spider Web (1/4);
- If the Putrid Worm has Regen → Sting (1/2);
- Otherwise → Sting (1/4), Curl Up (1/4).
- If the selected target has at least a 10% Evade debuff → Bite (1/2);
Additionally, any action other than Surrender has a 15% (40% in Hard/Epic) chance to summon another Putrid Worm; it will be the same level as the user. This summoning is disabled during Anna's boss fight.
Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)
- 25% and not Syphoned → Spider Web.
Summon[]
The Putrid Worm can be captured and used as a summon; in Equip Remix, the Alt Hobo Clothes can passively summon it between turns. It uses Spider Web to hit the targeted foe with a small amount of non-elemental physical damage while massively debuffing their Evade.
The Putrid Worm summon is a fantastic asset for capturing other foes, especially since it can be acquired very early on. Its pitiful damage minimizes the risk of killing the target and its enormous Evade debuff gives a good boost to their capture score. It has competition later in the game, where some foes are resistant to Evade debuffs and other capture-boosting options become available (including the Red Flybot and NoLegs Doll summons), but it remains a useful asset for most capturing scenarios.

Trivia[]
- On a NG++ and beyond, if the final boss has been previously captured, it will be replaced by an uncatchable Putrid Worm scaled to be 20 levels above the party. (see here)
