The Quartz Ore is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is mostly found in rocky areas, like the Forgotten Ruins or the eastern coast of the Frozen Valley.

Appearance[]

The Quartz Ore is a roughly oval chunk of grey stone. It has two oval holes in its front with glowing white eyes and numerous chunks of white quartz embedded in its other surfaces. The largest chunks have flat tops, as if the tips were cut off or smoothed down.

Overview[]

Like all Ores, the Quartz Ore's default strategy is to sacrifice itself to cast an elemental spell; in this case, Holy magic. It can use Purging Flame to damage a party member with a high chance of inflicting Dispel and a decent Magic Attack debuff; alternately, it can cast Nine Lives to heal the rest of the enemy wave. Fortunately, the latter doesn't grant Auto-Revive like NoLegs's version, essentially turning it into a reskinned Heal More.

As usual, the easiest way to neutralize a Quartz Ore (besides killing it before it can act) is to inflict Berserk or Syphon on it; both statuses force it to forgo suicide in favor of a weak ramming attack. If that's not an option, it's also fully vulnerable to Stun and Freeze, which leave it immobile until it can be killed off; the latter is especially useful, since it's resistant to Thunder but weak to Ice. On higher difficulty levels, the player can try maximizing the party's Holy resistance and spending the first turn of the battle setting up a powerful combo on the other foes; the Quartz Ore will become much more likely to use Bash instead of Purging Flame, and Nine Lives can't cure debuffs or status effects.

Aside from Ice, the Quartz Ore is vulnerable to Bomb and Wind, but its worst (or, if "More Foe Resistance" is active, only) elemental weakness is Dark; this allows Natalie, Lance, or NoLegs to easily kill it with their natural skills. On the other hand, Wind, the aforementioned Thunder, Earth, and especially Holy will be ineffective against it; it's also immune to Poison and Virus.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned or Berserked, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Nine Lives;
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Bash;
  • If the most damaged foe is ≥65% HP → Purging Flame;
  • Otherwise → Nine Lives (1/2), Purging Flame (1/2).

* On Hard/Epic, Purging Flame has up to a 70% chance to be replaced by Bash depending on player party Holy resistance.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% and not Syphoned → Purging Flame.

Summon[]

The Quartz Ore can be captured and used as a summon. When called upon, it sacrifices itself to use Heal More, restoring a good amount of HP to active party members. While the player has plenty of other healing options available, the Quartz Ore is relatively cheap and effective in an emergency.

Trivia[]

  • While likely coincidental, the Quartz Ore's design resembles a much rougher version of the Diamond Bit; a rounded grey stone dotted with white crystals, with the largest crystals arranged in a cross-like formation around its edges.
