―Matt, Epic Battle Fantasy 4

Ragnarok, also called Catastrophe in Epic Battle Fantasy (and renamed Calamity in the Epic Battle Fantasy Collection), is a summon for Natalie in Epic Battle Fantasy, and a Limit Break for Matt since Epic Battle Fantasy 3.

Description

In EBF1, a large, winged knight with claws, horns, and a mass of chains for a lower body will appear above the battlefield. It summons a collection of giant swords, spears and axes to drop on the battlefield, finishing off with a massive version of the Heaven's Gate which will deal significantly more damage than the other weapons. Most of them will rain down at the enemy, but one of them is guarantee to hit Natalie, dealing massive recoil damage. The weapons then glow white before disappearing.

Since its rework into a Limit Break in EBF3, the weapons are merely spawned in mid-air before freefalling. The weapons also no longer deal recoil damage to the caster, and will burn bright red before disappearing. EBF5 also enables Ragnarok to grant Brave and a powerful Attack buff to the entire party, letting them dish out massive physical damage on subsequent turns without fear of debuffs.

Catastrophe/Calamity hits all enemies 4 times for massive non-elemental damage, but deals heavy recoil damage to Natalie. This is often very dangerous, since Natalie always goes last in battle, so Matt cannot heal her before the enemies act.

As with all summons in EBF, it doesn't scale with Natalie's offensive stats but will still be affected by target defenses. This also applies to the recoil damage.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3

Ragnarok (which is now named) is now a Limit Break available to Matt. Despite its in-game description of it being 25% Holy, it is actually a non-elemental skill.

On top of dealing damage, Ragnarok now also essentially casts Temper on the whole party, giving a sizable Attack buff and the Brave status for several turns.

Trivia

  • Aside from Heaven's Gate and the strange axe with a curved orange blade and a red gem at the center of its head, the weapons summoned by Calamity are entirely different from those summoned by Ragnarok.
  • Some of the weapons that appear in this skill would later become usable weapons for the party. Aside from Heaven's Gate, the Black Fang and the Sol Spear can be seen in the Calamity animation, while the Thunder Spear and the Silver Blade appear in the Ragnarok version.
  • The name of Catastrophe/Calamity and Ragnarok are based off of abilities in the game Golden Sun; a summon and a spell, respectively.
    • While Ragnarok is an appropriate name for the Limit Break, given that it amounts to summoned swords raining down on the opponent, the Limit Break's animation (especially the original one) is specifically inspired by the summon.
  • The inscription on the blade of the Heaven's Gate is the word "heaven" displayed in the Symbol font, which contains Greek letters for the code points of Latin letters. Since the two alphabets don't exactly match, the Greek inscription would read as "ēeapen".
    • This inscription is not visible on the equipment version of the Heaven's Gate.
