"Taste the rainbow! (TM!)"
―Matt / Anna, Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Rainbow Rafflesia is an optional boss encountered in Epic Battle Fantasy 4. It's a stronger version of Rafflesia and is fought on Battle Mountain — as such, it is exclusive to the Steam release of the game and the post-Battle Mountain update version of the Premium Pack.

Appearance

The Rainbow Rafflesia looks similar to the normal Rafflesia, being a massive green plant monster with a huge, toothy mouth and a large flower on top of its head. However, its teeth are white instead of yellow and its visible eye is no longer bloodshot, giving it a slightly cleaner appearance than Rafflesia. The flower on its head has numerous small petals; most are rounded and multicolored, but a ring of pointed white petals surrounds its numerous orange pistils. It also has curled vines on its back instead of leaves.

Overview

The Rainbow Rafflesia has the same physical attacks as its weaker counterpart, including Thorny Vines and non-elemental leaf strikes, but it also wields a whole "rainbow" of multi-target elemental spells that gives it impressive coverage and the ability to inflict all sorts of status effects and debuffs. Its strongest attack is an arched rainbow beam released from its flower which deals immense non-elemental damage to a single target; if they survive, there's a high chance they'll suffer a Stun. Its attacks are made all the more painful thanks to its high offensive stats; its Attack is almost twice as high as a normal foe's, and its Magic Attack is literally four times higher than average (which compensates for the relatively low base power of its AoE spells).

Much like the regular Rafflesia, Rainbow Rafflesia constantly summons Flowers every turn, increasing its summon rate as its HP falls. However, it only summons one type of Flower: the Rainbloom, which has a plethora of single-target elemental spells to use on the party. Rainbow Rafflesia also has one of the strongest support skills in the game; in a single move, it heals a good chunk of its HP, erases its negative status effects, buffs Magic Attack and Magic Defence of the entire enemy wave, and (on Hard or Epic) gives itself enough Bless stacks to nullify Dispel or status-infliction for nine turns.

Rainbow Rafflesia resists Holy and Dark while only being weak to Wind. It has the standard boss immunity to Stun, Freeze, and Instant Death, but it also resists Dispel while being immune to Syphon and highly resistant to all stat debuffs.

Defeating Rainbow Rafflesia on Epic difficulty will reward the player with the "End Of The Rainbow" Medal.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Start of Turn:

  • ≥49% HP: Summons one Rainbloom.
  • <49% HP: Summons two Rainblooms.

Action:

  • ≥65% HP → Leaf Whip (3/12), Thorny Vine (3/12), Firestorm (1/12), Thunderstorm (1/12), Icestorm (1/12), Hurricane (1/12), Bubble Blast (1/12), Gaia Blossom (1/12).
  • <65% to ≥49% HP → Thorny Vine (3/15), Firestorm (1/15), Thunderstorm (1/15), Icestorm (1/15), Hurricane (1/15), Bubble Blast (1/15), Gaia Blossom (1/15), Rainbow (3/15), Healing Skill (3/15).
  • <49% to ≥32% HP → Thorny Vines (3/15), Firestorm (1/15), Thunderstorm (1/15), Icestorm (1/15), Hurricane (1/15), Bubble Blast (1/15), Gaia Blossom (1/15), Rainbow (3/15), Healing Skill (3/15).
  • <32% HP → Triple Leaf Whip (3/18), Thorny Vines (3/18), Firestorm (1/18), Thunderstorm (1/18), Icestorm (1/18), Hurricane (1/18), Bubble Blast (1/18), Gaia Blossom (1/18), Rainbow (3/18), Healing Skill (3/18).

Strategy

Equipment

  • The Rainbow Rafflesia (and its summoned Rainblooms) can use all elements except for Holy, Dark, and Bomb; that's a lot of coverage, but elemental resistance is not worthless. Some equipment pieces provide a few elemental resistances at once; when combined wisely, this can give some resistance against most (if not all) of the boss's magic, reducing its damage to Regen-able amounts or nullifying it outright. Remember that it also has some non-elemental attacks as well!
  • The Golden Armor will make Matt or Lance immune to three of Rainbow Rafflesia's elements; unfortunately, it is only found after beating the individual Rainbow Rafflesia encounter, relegating its use to the Mega Boss Rush.
  • The Rainbow Rafflesia has relatively sparse elemental resistances; aside from Dark and Holy, any element can be used without fear of dealing low damage. The Wet status effect can be used to boost Ice and Thunder attacks until it is cleansed with the Healing Skill, and Wind attacks hit its only actual weakness (while also dealing more damage to its Rainblooms).

To do: This section has more aspects to cover. Any more specific suggestions?

Battle

  • Most of Rainbow Rafflesia's offensive abilities target all players and can inflict nasty status effects; fortunately, the chance for the latter isn't too high aside from Stun (Rainbow), Tired (Gaia Blossom), and Magic Defence debuffs (Hurricane). Be ready to use Healmore, Slime Bunny, and occasionally Purify.
  • Surprisingly, unlike the basic Rafflesia, Rainbow Rafflesia is neutral to Poison (both the element and the status). However, this tactic isn't very reliable due to the chance of Healing Skill being used, cancelling Poison and (on higher difficulties) giving an immunity against it for 9 turns.
  • The Rainbow Rafflesia's Healing Skill can be used before Bless expires on higher difficulties, effectively giving it immunity to status effects and boosted Magic Attack and Magic Defence for the rest of the battle. The latter buff can be turned against it with Giga Drill; coupled with an Attack buff, it can out-damage the boss's healing.
  • Anna's Whirlwind skill hits the boss' Wind weakness and has a chance to debuff its Magic Defence, partially counteracting the Healing Skill. However, the debuff chance is rather low — 35% with the skill maxed, considering all resistances.

Trivia

  • Rainbow Rafflesia's base Magic Attack is technically higher than that of Godcat, a near-omnipotent being.
