"Omg, so cute! ^_______^"
―Natalie meets a Friend Dog, Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Rescue Dog (Friend Dog in EBF4) is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. It is a fairly rare foe that can be found scattered across the map in both games.

Appearance[]

The Rescue Dog has off-white fur with a white underside, brown paws, and a short tail. Unlike most other Dogs, its ears and tail are curly rather than straight and pointed. It also has a round barrel tied around its neck with a red string; the barrel is stopped with a small brown cork and has a large cross on the front.

In EBF4, the Friend Dog has small black eyes, a scattering of tiny freckles along its muzzle, a red cross on its barrel, and a red scroll tied to the back of its neck. In EBF5, its Rescue Dog counterpart loses the scroll, has the cross on its barrel changed from red to green, and gains larger eyes, more prominent freckles, and small brown claws on its paws.

Overview[]

"Eee, it's too cute to fight!"
―Anna, being debilitated by the Friend Dog's cuteness, Epic Battle Fantasy 4

The Rescue Dog poses very little threat on its own, with its only offensive move being a weak non-elemental strike that has no special effects. Instead, it will support its teammates by buffing their Evade, or using its cuteness to debuff player Attack. It can also heal itself with a swig from its barrel, so taking it out in one shot is recommended.

As with other foes that can buff their allies, it is generally recommended to deal with a Rescue Dog as fast as possible before it has a chance to make other enemies that much harder to kill. Fortunately, it consistently lacks resistances while being weak to Bio and especially Dark; magic attacks can circumvent its Attack debuff and applying Syphon or Berserk can lock it out of its more annoying support moves.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

As the name suggests, the Friend Dog is a peaceful creature that won't even attack someone trying to kill it, preferring to make it harder for assailants to hurt it and its allies. It can buff the Evade of the entire wave at once with a bark, or pose cutely to weaken the entire party's Attack; it can also fully heal itself by taking a drink from its barrel. On higher difficulty levels, its buff and debuff become slightly stronger.

The only thing that can provoke a Friend Dog to violence is to give it Berserk status, driving it to use a non-elemental physical attack. Fortunately, this attack isn't very strong even with the Berserk boost; more importantly, it stops the Friend Dog from using its regular skills. If Berserk isn't an option, Syphon will force it to spam its Cute Pose, which can be exploited by a magic-focused party to take it and its allies down. If fought conventionally, it's best to take out the Friend Dog in a single turn to prevent it from healing itself; Poison and Burn can help chip away at it between heals.

The Friend Dog has literally no resistances whatsoever, as well as weaknesses to Bio and especially Dark. It's also incredibly vulnerable to Curse, although this can be difficult to exploit when it is first encountered. Enabling "More Foe Resistance" makes it neutral to all elements.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Rescue Dog has a non-elemental physical strike, but it's very weak and unremarkable. Its true specialty is hampering the party's ability to kill their foes, whether by hitting them with a decent Attack debuff or by increasing the Evade of itself and its allies. When injured, it can drink from the barrel around its neck to restore about half of its HP; it will always do this once its HP falls below 19%, so it's important to finish it off on the same turn it hits that threshold.

Higher difficulty levels improve the Rescue Dog's support abilities. Its Evade buff becomes stronger, its Cute Pose makes it Lovable while reducing Attack by a greater degree, and its Alcoheal applies a few stacks of Regen to let it heal over time.

When trying to kill a Rescue Dog, remember that it won't start using Alcoheal until it falls below half health; try to keep it just above that threshold before wiping it out with a strong attack. It's not very tough, so it's not too hard to do so, but spells are more effective, since it has no way to debuff Magic Attack. Skills like Bind can be used to counteract its Evade buff, which is especially useful if the Rescue Dog is Berserk; it'll spam its buff to the exclusion of all else. Syphon is an even better countermeasure, as it forces the foe to use its weak Hit instead of its healing and support moves.

The Rescue Dog's biggest weakness is Dark, but Bio is also effective at taking huge chunks out of its HP. It has no other elemental resistances, but it does resist Freeze and Chill. With "More Foe Resistance" active, it loses its Dark weakness and gains a Holy absorption.

Summon[]

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Friend Dog summon is available from the beginning of the game; in the Premium version, the Puppy Hat may randomly summon it between turns. It is essentially a replacement of the NoLegs skill from previous games.

Upon activation, a Friend Dog will appear and throw its barrel into the air, giving a random healing item to the party. The items are still affected by the item power boost of the Casual Shirt, the School Uniform, and the Shrine Maiden Dress.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Rescue Dog can be captured and used as a summon. It uses its Cute Pose to make the entire party Lovable for two turns.

Trivia[]

  • Even though the Friend Dog is the first summon available to the player in Epic Battle Fantasy 4, it is still only the second cheapest, being 3 points more expensive than Scanbot.
  • In EBF5, the Rescue Dog is the only member of its family unaffected by Beast-scaring equipment.
  • In EBF5, the Puppy Hat has a chance to randomly summon "Maxi", a Rescue Dog with a unique sprite. This is a homage to Matt's dog Maxi (the same dog who was originally featured in the Screamer attack), who died during the development of EBF5.
