The River Squid is a foe that appears in Epic Battle Fantasy 4. It is primarily found in Lankyroot Jungle.

Appearance

The River Squid has large eyes with orange-yellow irises, two long tentacle "arms", several short tentacle "feet", and a head shaped rather like a calabash. Its body is primarily dark blue, but with lighter blue markings resembling waves and splashes of water. It also has a pair of tiny, light blue fins near the base of its head.

Overview

The River Squid uses a combination of physical tentacle jabs and watery (but not necessarily Water-based) magic attacks, allowing it to make good use of its high offensive stats. Its jabs can be non-elemental or partly Thunder-based, with the latter having a good chance to Stun the target. Its magic attacks deal non-elemental damage while applying Wet and a modest Evade debuff; Spit is more powerful, but Bubbles is more accurate and hits the entire party at once. Either way, the victim(s) will be more vulnerable to the Squid's Stunning Jab; fortunately, its AI isn't programmed to specifically exploit this combo.

The River Squid intensifies its assault once its HP falls past a certain point (below 49% in v1, below 29% in v2). Its Jab is powered up, and it'll start using a new multi-target Water spell. On lower difficulty levels, it can cast Bubble Blast, essentially a slightly stronger Bubbles that deals pure Water damage and has a small chance to inflict Wet and an Attack debuff. On Hard or Epic difficulty, it gains access to Tsunami, which is much stronger (about double the base power of the Megaflares used by most Dragons), incredibly accurate, and all but guaranteed to inflict the maximum amount of Wet to non-immune players.

Due to its dangerous low-HP pattern, players should avoid dealing significant damage to the River Squid unless they're certain they can kill it on the same turn it passes the threshold. The best way to do this is to use Instant Death attacks, but regular damage stacking is also perfectly viable; Cloudburst can apply Wet for subsequent Ice and Thunder skills without healing the foe. Until it gains access to Tsunami, Accuracy debuffs are another means to reduce its damage output; it has no resistance to the debuff or Tired status, its spells are rather inaccurate, and its base Accuracy is a little lower than a normal foe's. Alternatively, Berserk or Syphon can be used to prevent it from using its magic and its Stunning Jab, but be prepared for the resulting Double Jab spam.

The River Squid absorbs Water, strongly resists Stun and Freeze, and resists both Fire and Wind. on the other hand, it is weak to Bio, Ice, and especially Earth and Thunder; additionally, it has a vulnerability to Doom and Instant Death. "More Foe Resistance" removes its Ice and Earth weaknesses and makes it very resistant to Doom and Instant Death.

Battle Logic

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • Berserked or/and Syphoned → Double Jab;
  • ≥29% HP → Jab (1/4), Stunning Jab (1/4), Spit (1/4), Bubbles (1/4);
  • <29% HP on Hard/Epic → Double Jab (1/5), Stunning Jab (1/5), Spit (1/5), Bubbles (1/5), Tsunami (1/5).
  • <29% HP on Easy/Normal → Double Jab (1/5), Stunning Jab (1/5), Spit (1/5), Bubbles (1/5), Bubble Blast (1/5).

Before the v2 update, the River Squid's low-HP pattern was triggered at 49% HP instead of 29%.
