The Scaly Worm is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It appears in multiple location, but it tends to be most common in the Frozen Valley.

Appearance[]

The Scaly Worm is a caterpillar-like creature with an off-white underbelly and face separated from its blue back with dark red spots by a thin red stripe. It also has large red eyes, two red horns with blue stripes near the base, and two tiny blue wings on its back. It can have one of five expressions:

  1. Four small fangs protruding from the upper lip.
  2. A single square tooth protruding from the middle of the lower lip.
  3. One triangular fang protruding from the upper lip.
  4. Two triangular fangs protruding from the lower lip.
  5. One triangular fang protruding from the corner of the lower lip.

Overview[]

The Scaly Worm is a fairly simplistic foe with the standard bite and sting attacks of its brethren. Both deal mild non-elemental physical damage and the Sting has a high chance to inflict Disable, but they also have terrible Accuracy; Sting in particular will literally miss half of the time. Its strongest and most reliable attack deals magical Water damage and inflicts a few stacks of Wet; however, its damage output is still quite low and Wet is largely inconsequential unless the Worm's allies have powerful Thunder or Ice attacks. Additionally, it can curl up to give itself a Defence buff, but low HP and a plethora of weaknesses means that the party will have little difficulty taking it down even without magic attacks or sources of Dispel. All of its skills have a decent chance to call a Worm for backup; it's usually another Scaly Worm, but it can occasionally bring in a Cutie Worm instead.

On higher difficulty levels, the Scaly Worm's buff ability also improves its Accuracy, the Disable effect on its Sting becomes twice as powerful and its Bite gains a very small chance to apply Virus on its target. The chance of it summoning reinforcements also increases significantly, so be prepared to take out multiple Worms at once.

In general, the Scaly Worm can be easily defeated by anything other than Water attacks, especially since its Evade isn't very good. If you're having trouble killing it faster than it can call backup, Stun and Freeze will prevent it from acting on its turn (and thus, summoning more Worms). Tired also cripples it severely; it lowers its already-poor Evade, makes it even harder to land its physical attacks, and further amplifies its extreme vulnerability to Bio damage.

A Water absorption is the extent of the Scaly Worm's resistances; on the other hand, it's weak to Ice, Earth, and especially Thunder and Bio. The latter weakness is further emphasized by its severe susceptibility to Poison and Virus. "More Foe Resistance" turns its Ice weakness into an absorption.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If Berserked → Bite;
  • If Syphoned → Sting (1/2), Bite (1/2);
  • Otherwise → Sting (1/4), Water Shot (1/4);
    • If the Scaly Worm has at least a 10% Defence buff → Bite (1/2);
    • Otherwise → Bite (1/4), Curl Up (1/4).

Additionally, any action other than Surrender has a 25% (50% in Hard/Epic) chance to summon either a Scaly Worm (3/4 chance) or a Cutie Worm (1/4 chance), these will be at the same level as the user.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25% → Water Shot.

Summon[]

The Scaly Worm can be captured and used as a summon. It simply applies five stacks of Wet to the entire party (including backup players), reducing Fire and Bomb damage at the cost of making them more vulnerable to Thunder and Ice.
