Scan is one of Lance abilities in EBF 3, but can even be found in EBF 2 being used by the scanbot.
Scan is the only skill which you start with, and it´s ability is rather unique. It scans foes, giving you their info about certain things:
-The elemental weaknesses and strengths of the foe.
-The stat weaknesses (this means, if the enemy is easily affected by a stat, as stun).
-The stat resistance (if the enemy is hardly affected by any stat).
-The type of enemy it belongs to.
-It´s amount of HP left and maximum HP.
-It´s defence, magic defence and evade number (a high defence number, a high defence).
Bill and Lance talking about Scan:
Bill: "That´s an interesting device you´ve got there, my son."
Lance: "I´m not your son, and it´s called a scouter. I stole from a guy with a rough attitude and a tail. It seems to gauge an opponent´s power level."
Bill: "Seems like you already know a bit about it! Remember to use your Scan ability on as many foes as possible, the information you gain will be forever stored in the Bestiary, and can be used across many saved games."
By scanning foes, a total of three medals can be awarded in-game.
