"That's no dragon, that's just a big stupid bird!
What's it gonna do, peck us to death like a pigeon looking for crumbs?
"
―Matt meeting a Sky Dragon, Epic Battle Fantasy 5

The Sky Dragon is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. Though there are a few in The Rapture, the majority of the population is found in the Forgotten Ruins.

Appearance[]

The Sky Dragon is a large reptilian monster with assorted avian features. The upper half of its neck and most of its head are covered in sage-green feathers, with white-tipped dark green feathers sprouting from its cheeks and forming a crest on the back of its head. It has round yellow eyes with black slits for pupils. Its mouth is a large yellow beak with a dark red tip; its lower jaw has a small protrusion on the chin.

As is typical for its kind, the Sky Dragon's body is never seen; only its neck and head are visible in battle.

Overview[]

Despite Matt's less-than-impressed commentary, the Sky Dragon shouldn't be underestimated; it's every bit as powerful as the rest of the Dragons. Aside from the typical Head Bash, its physical skills hit multiple times, targeting a random player with each hit; most of them are only slightly Wind-based, but Razor Feathers has a 50% elemental degree. Its magic skills include Hurricane, Thunder Storm, and Ice Storm, which hit the entire active party and run off its good Magic Attack; they all have associated effects, but only Hurricane's Light and Magic Defence debuff are liable to take hold unless the player is completely vulnerable to Freeze or Stun. Unlike most Dragons, its "Megaflare" attack is its weakest attack, but it compensates with high Accuracy and a decent chance of Dispel. Additionally, it can roar to debuff the party's Evade while buffing the Accuracy of all foes, which combines to drastically increase their chances of scoring a hit.

On Hard or Epic difficulty, the Sky Dragon's Gale Breath has a much higher Dispel chance, and the effects of its Roar are slightly stronger (both the buff and debuff).

The Sky Dragon is intelligent enough to use whichever of its elemental spells will do the most damage to the party, but most of its offense remains Wind-based; adding some Ice and Thunder resistance will ensure they take minimal damage from any of its options. Dispel resistance should be a priority to neuter the main risk of its Gale Breath, with Light, Freeze, or Stun being a secondary priority depending on the party's elemental resistances (since it'll only use one of Hurricane, Ice Storm, or Thunder Storm based on that). Its resistances are fairly sparse, especially against status effects; Weaken, Tired, and Curse are equally effective at reducing its stats and making it more vulnerable for capturing, and the latter works with Wet and/or Stagger to set up a powerful damage combo. It can even be Stunned or Frozen, although this will require a dedicated status build and possible Firecrackers support to achieve consistently.

The Sky Dragon absorbs Wind, is immune to Earth, Doom, and Instant Death, and resists Holy; on the other hand, it's weak to Ice and especially Thunder. Also, it greatly resists Stun, Chill, Freeze, and Syphon, and slightly resists all stat debuffs besides HP.

With "More Foe Resistance" active, the Sky Dragon's debuff resistance increases slightly and it becomes strongly resistant to Weaken, Tired, Bad Luck, and Curse. Additionally, it gains a Holy absorption while becoming immune to Fire, Ice, and Water.

It should be noted that the Sky Dragon is the only foe that can drop a Mint Leaf, as well as the only non-boss foe that drops a Star Fragment. While theoretically useful for farming, the Mint Leaf cannot be stolen and has a ludicrously low drop rate, and there are more efficient foes for gold farming despite the Star Fragment's unmatched sale value. However, the Sky Dragon is one of the best foes to farm Star Fragments from; in comparison, Ultra Chibi Knight is only available as a second-wave foe or later, and neither Rafflesia nor GUOYE can have Star Fragments stolen from them.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Nothing;
  • If Berserked, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Gale Breath;
  • If Syphoned → Double Peck (1/2), Quad Peck (1/2);
  • If Berserked → Quad Peck;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable;
    • If a randomly selected player has less than a 15% Accuracy debuff and a randomly selected foe has less than a 15% Accuracy buff → Roar (5/20), Razor Feathers (6/20);
      • If all active players resist Wind → Gale Breath (3/20), Magic* (6/20);
      • Otherwise → Gale Breath (6/20), Magic* (3/20);
    • Otherwise → Razor Feathers (2/5);
      • If all active players resist Wind → Gale Breath (1/5), Magic* (2/5);
      • Otherwise → Gale Breath (2/5), Magic* (1/5);
  • Otherwise;
    • If a randomly selected player has less than a 15% Accuracy debuff and a randomly selected foe has less than a 15% Accuracy buff → Roar (5/20), Razor Feathers (3/20), Head Bash (3/20), Double Peck (3/20);
      • If all active players resist Wind → Magic* (6/20);
      • Otherwise → Gale Breath (3/20), Magic* (3/20);
    • Otherwise → Razor Feathers (1/5), Head Bash (1/5), Double Peck (1/5);
      • If all active players resist Wind → Magic* (2/5);
      • Otherwise → Gale Breath (1/5), Magic* (1/5).

* "Magic" chooses best elemental spell based on active party's elemental resistance between Hurricane, Ice Storm and Thunder Storm.

* Double Peck (except when Syphoned) becomes Quad Peck when <49% HP

Before the v2 update, when catch score >55, all players were Lovable, and Syphoned, the Sky Dragon used Gale Breath instead.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% → Head Bash.

Summon[]

The Sky Dragon can be captured and used as a summon; alternatively, it has a small chance of being summoned between turns by the Alt Dragon's Feather. It roars to debuff the Defence of all foes before using a modified version of Razor Feathers, hitting the entire wave eight times for physical Wind damage. Both parts of the summon's attack have high Accuracy.
