"Ah yes, the classic flying fish model.This was a very popular design back in the days of airships and steam power."
- ―Lance, Epic Battle Fantasy 5
The Steam Fish is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is usually found in the Mineshaft Maze, although a few have found their way to Redpine Town.
Appearance[]
The Steam Fish is a brass and tan robot with the general design of all Fishes; a vaguely pear-shaped body with a large mouth-like opening on one end, several thrusters on the other end, and two more engines mounted on the sides to help it achieve lift. However, the Steam Fish also has a visible propeller in its "mouth", as well as a pair of sail-like fins on its back. Its engines emit faint white rings instead of flames; based on its name, bestiary description, and Lance's comments upon first encountering them, they are powered by a steam engine of some sort.
Overview[]
The Steam Fish attacks by charging into or through players, dealing mostly physical damage that tends to be at least partially Wind-elemental. Most of its attacks are single-target, but it can hit all active party members with a dash attack similar to Swift Slash; this also has a chance to inflict Light on the party to boost the power of its subsequent Wind attacks. While not particularly strong, its above-average Evade can make it more difficult to hit with low-Accuracy skills.
Higher difficulty levels double the risk of Light from the Steam Fish's Swift Flight while enabling it to Confuse players with its Triple Loop. the infliction chance on the latter isn't the best, but some resistance to the status can help keep the party under control.
Being a Fish, the Steam Fish will make one final attack against the party when killed; its engines will break off of its body and land on a random player, exploding for decent magical Bomb damage with a good chance of Stagger. This attack can be prevented by afflicting the Steam Fish with Syphon or Stun before finishing it off.
The Steam Fish is weak to Wind, Bomb, and especially Ice; on the other hand, it resists Bio and is immune to Earth, Poison, and Virus. "More Foe Resistance" removes its Ice weakness and increases its Bio resistance to a full immunity while giving it a Holy absorption and significant resistance to Accuracy and Evade debuffs.

Battle Logic[]
The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.
- If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Flee
- If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Swift Flight;
- If Syphoned or Berserked → Ram (1/2), Triple Loop (1/2);
- Otherwise → Ram (1/4), Triple Loop (1/4), Loop (1/4), Swift Flight (1/4).
*Loop will prioritize targets that aren't resistant to Wind.
Additionally, the Steam Fish will use its Fish Missiles when it's killed (unless it's Syphoned or Stunned).
Unlike most other foes, the Steam Fish doesn't get a counter when Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled.
Summon[]
The Steam Fish can be captured and used as a summon; additionally, the Alt Soul Pistol has a good chance to summon it between turns. It uses Swift Flight to hit all foes with mild physical Wind damage and a small chance of inflicting a stack of Light.
