The Deceased, known as The Departed in EBF4, is a non-elemental bow available for Anna in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5.

Description[]

The Departed is entirely composed of bones, possibly out of a tail or a spine. The outer edge of the bow has an array of spikes, as well as a single large spike near the bottom. The arrows are also thinner bones (possibly thigh bones) with a sharp, asymmetrical tip that acts as the arrowhead.

The Deceased is made of several bones bound together with leather strips, with the result resembling the shoulders of a human skeleton. A few loose tassels dangle off of the middle of the bow. The arrows are similar to The Departed's, but with a small leather band tied around the shaft, just below the arrowhead.

Whether as The Departed or The Deceased, this bow makes up for average-at-best offenses with excellent debilitation capabilities. Its weapon-elemental skills can inflict a status effect and a strong defensive debuff, and it usually has a bonus skill to add even more ailments. It's also consistently resistant to Doom and Instant Death, becoming fully immune at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Departed gives a mediocre boost to Attack and Magic Attack, but its real worth lies in its ability to harass foes with Doom and Magic Defence debuffs by using Anna's weapon-elemental attacks. Even if the foes aren't put on a timer, the debuff can soften them up before Natalie or Lance hits them with powerful magic attacks; this is especially effective with Arrow Rain, as it allows Anna to hit an entire wave of foes with a great chance of applying its effects.

The Departed's strengths are further improved with its ability to unleash Bones with its single-target weapon-elemental skills; while the Doom timer on this skill is a few turns longer, it can still give Anna some added insurance if the innate Doom status doesn't trigger or if the on-hit status was changed by a Flair. It also counters attacks with a Normal Attack, providing opportunities to activate its on-hit effects even on the enemies' turn.

The Departed resists Doom and Instant Death, becoming immune to both at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Normal[]

Although The Deceased has average offenses, debilitation is its true forte. It can inflict Doom and a decent Defence debuff with Anna's weapon-elemental skills, with an added chance of casting Bone Star for some Dark-elemental magic damage and a chance of inflicting Syphon. It also powers up Anna's debuffing skills (including its on-hit Defence debuff) and has a chance to summon a Zombie Hand between turns, giving her another source of Doom infliction.

The Deceased lends itself well to a debuff-based support build for Anna, with its Defence debuff supplementing the lack of Debilitate. It also has a good Doom chance; although Anna can surpass this with a full status build, the Fat Fly's late availability means that The Deceased is an effective substitute for much of the mid and late-game. Either way, Arrow Rain is a perfect means of spreading its on-hit effects to an entire wave if the Zombie Hand summon doesn't trigger, and Bad Luck support (such as from the Human Skull, the Golden Axe, or Firecrackers) can further reduce enemy life expectancy. If Doom isn't necessary, Anna can opt for a status Flair to further amplify her allies' damage (or just maintain the Defence debuff with Curse from the Crossbone Pin).

The Deceased resists Weaken, Tired, CurseBad Luck, Doom and Instant Death. It becomes immune to all of them at Level 5.

Equip Remix[]

The Alt Deceased is a balanced offensive bow with good Attack and Magic Attack and big boosts to both Accuracy and Evade. Its weapon-elemental skills inflict Bad Luck and a fairly strong Magic Defence debuff with a chance to unleash Bone Pillar (which benefits from the bow's boost to non-elemental skills), and it can counter with a Normal Attack to punish Anna's attackers with its on-hit effects.

While Bone Pillar is quite powerful and carries a decent Weaken chance, it's inconsistent enough that the Alt Deceased's other traits should be focused on when deciding how best to use it. The non-elemental boost is mostly negligible; aside from the Bone Pillar unleash, Anna's only options for non-elemental attacks are Geometry and Sawblade. The resistances are notable for protecting Anna against all of the stat-reducing ailments as well as Confuse, allowing her to maintain her offensive with minimal disruption. Being able to apply Bad Luck can be useful (especially if a reliable source of Doom is available), and the Magic Defence debuff can provide opportunities for the party to deliver some arcane pain to the afflicted foes; in both cases, Arrow Rain enables Anna to afflict a whole group of foes with one attack, and the right status-changing Flair offers the opportunity to further amplify allied damage output.

The Alt Deceased resists Weaken, Tired, CurseBad Luck, Stagger and Confuse, becoming immune to all of them at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Departed is found inside the left tomb of Graybone Cemetery, in one of the chests surrounded by spikes. Light up the torches with The Candle to lower the spikes.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Deceased is found inside a chest in Anna's House in Greenwood Village. The chest is blocked by a Copper Block, which requires a Copper Key to unlock.

Trivia[]

  • The Deceased can be considered part of a subset of bone-themed weapons in EBF5, along with the Human Skull, Kaladanda, Club of Withering and Spine Snapper. Other than their visual appearance, their common themes include being focused around debuffs, being able to inflict either Instant Death or Doom (be it directly or through bonus/auto skills), and being non-elemental (except for the Spine Snapper).
