The Topaz Ore is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It usually appears in caves and other rocky areas.

Appearance[]

The Topaz Ore is a roughly round chunk of black stone dotted with pointed Topaz crystals. It has two oval holes for a "face" with glowing yellow eyes.

Overview[]

The Topaz Ore is a Thunder-based foe that will try to sacrifice itself at the first opportunity. When it does so, it can either cast Protect on its allies (also giving them Good Luck on harder difficulties) or blast the party with electricity, dealing modest magical Thunder damage with a tiny Stagger chance.

The Topaz Ore is generally weak enough to be killed in a hit or two, but another option is to hit it with Syphon and/or Berserk; this prevents it from self-destructing and forces it to use a weak non-elemental physical attack. The party can then disregard it or defeat it at their leisure; Syphon will also stop it from countering if "Counter-Attacking Foes" is in effect. On Hard or Epic difficulty, raising the party's Thunder resistance will also give it a chance to use Bash instead of its Electric Blast attack; it can still cast Protect, so magic attacks are advisable if the Topaz Ore can't be killed or neutralized.

The Topaz Ore is weak to Water, Wind, Bomb and especially Ice; given its low health and self-destructive nature, multi-target attacks like Machine Guns or Water Whirl are most useful. On the other hand, it absorbs Thunder, resists Bio, and is immune to Earth, Poison, and Virus. Enabling "More Foe Resistance" removes its Water, Wind, and Bomb weaknesses.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Action

  • If Syphoned or Berserked, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If Syphoned or Berserked → Bash;
  • If a randomly selected foe has at least a 15% Defence buff or no other foes are left → Electric Blast;
  • Otherwise → Electric Blast (1/2), Protect (1/2).

* On Hard/Epic, Electric Blast has up to a 80% chance to be replaced by Bash depending on player party Thunder resistance.

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 33% and not Syphoned → Electric Blast.

Summon[]

The Topaz Ore can be captured and used as a summon. It sacrifices itself to cast Protect on the party, buffing the Defence of all players (including the backup). While theoretically useful as an alternative buff if Protect is on cooldown, it is noticeably less effective than using Protect with equipment that boosts the power of buff skills.

Trivia[]

  • The Topaz Ore can be considered the physical Thunder-based counterpart of the Zircon Ore. Their bodies are covered with the spikiest crystals of any Ores, they are associated with a powerful defensive buff, and their summons cost the same amount of SP.
