Karate Gi and Headband

Matt and Lance wearing the Karate Gi in EBF4

The Turtle Gi, known as the Karate Gi in EBF4, is a male armor available in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5. Its hat counterpart is the Headband.

Description[]

The Karate Gi is a traditional martial artist's uniform made of white cloth. The top is held closed by a black cloth belt wrapped around the waist and tied at the back, and the cuffs of the pants are slightly ragged and worn.

The armor was renamed and heavily redesigned in EBF5; it is now a sleeveless orange gi with small, X-shaped stitches near the hem of the top and the cuffs of the pants. If worn by Matt or Lance, it comes with a long-sleeved blue undershirt and a blue cloth belt tied at the back. NoLegs wears a smaller version of the gi's top, held shut by unknown means since it lacks the belt.

In both of its appearances, the Karate/Turtle Gi boosts the wearer's HP and Evade, but its defenses are the lowest of any male armor. However, this can work in the wearer's favor, as it also gives him stat buffs when he's at a disadvantage (either by taking an especially strong blow or by being at low HP in general).

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

Among male armor, the Karate Gi has the worst Defence and Magic Defence, only tying with the Genji Armor in the latter case. However, it compensates with huge boosts to HP and Evade, only surpassed by the Knight Armor in the former and tying with the Ninja Gear in the latter. It also buffs its wearer's Evade if he takes a powerful attack; with some luck, this can let Matt or Lance survive for much longer than its lacking defenses suggest he should.

Although its defenses are slightly worse than the Ninja Gear, the Karate Gi's comparable Evade, great HP, ability to buff the former (albeit situationally), and status resistance generally make it a superior choice for an Evade-based defensive build.

The Karate Gi resists Earth, Dark, and Tired, with none becoming an immunity at Level 5.

Normal[]

The Turtle Gi has great Evade and Accuracy along with a smaller bonus to HP, but it's the only male armor in the game that has no defenses whatsoever. Fortunately, it has a very high chance of granting the Morale status to the user, which works with its stats to increase his chances of survival despite his frailty. This, in turn, is intended to enable its most powerful and unique effect: the ability to buff the wearer's Attack, Magic Attack, Defence and Magic Defence whenever they're hit. The buff becomes stronger as the wearer's HP falls; see the relevant page for the exact details.

While certainly interesting, the Turtle Gi is a rather niche armor due to its low defensive stat bonuses and lack of relevant resistances. The buffing effect only reaches its full potential at very low HP levels - even then, it caps at 80%, which is lower than what the players can reach with buffing equipment. Although it can be used in sync with the Morale application for suicide builds to waive the need to rebuff the wearer's offences, those are generally not particularly recommended.

The Turtle Gi resists Stun, Stagger, Confuse and Dispel, becoming immune to all of them at Level 5.

Equip Remix[]

The Alt Turtle Gi has mediocre defenses and the unique ability to buff the wearer's Attack, Magic Attack, Defence and Magic Defence whenever he takes damage. The buffs become stronger depending on how low the wearer's HP is, but they won't reach their full potency until he's on the brink of death; it's highly recommended to use Morale support and other means to survive such a state.

The Alt Turtle Gi can also give the wearer Enchanted status when he Defends himself, giving it a small niche for Target tanking against powerful magic attacks. In this regard, it usually outperforms the Alt Dark Gown; it has better Defence to slightly mitigate the downside of Enchanted, lacks an Evade penalty and an elemental weakness, and its inferior Magic Defence is generally irrelevant for an Enchant Tank build. Its resistances also protect the wearer from potentially dangerous status effects; on the other hand, a lack of elemental resistances can make it more vulnerable outside of its on-Defend Enchanted.

The Alt Turtle Gi gives resistance to Stun and Dispel, becoming immune to both at Level 5.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Karate Gi is obtained as a quest reward from Tang in Goldenbrick Resort. The quest can be completed the moment it is taken by walking two screens to the right, taking the Blood Orb from the pedestal and coming back, with no fights required.
