The Wise Mirror is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It usually appears around Greenwood Village and the Mystic Woods.

Appearance[]

The Wise Mirror has a rectangular frame made of brown oak wood, with leaf designs on each corner; the upper corners also have a pair of off-white antlers. Until it is broken, a pair of dark brown eyes are visible in the center of its silvery glass surface.

Overview[]

Despite being made predominantly of glass, the Wise Mirror isn't above getting into the faces of its enemies. It can smack a player with its frame for non-elemental damage or summon thorns from its glass to stab them; the latter attack is partially Bio-based and has a very small chance of inflicting Stun. It also knows some Wind magic; Whirlwind hits one target and has a chance to inflict Light and a decent Magic Defence debuff, while Wind Blast hits the entire party at once. Additionally, it can break itself to bombard the party with the resulting glass shards, but this can only be used once.

On higher difficulty levels, the Wise Mirror can use Overgrowth for higher physical Bio damage and a modest chance of Poison. Additionally, the Stun chance on Thorns increases, and Wind Blast gains a small chance to inflict Tired, which is particularly dangerous if it follows up with Overgrowth.

Like the other Mirrors, this foe can "reflect" attacks; this simply means counterattacking to them, not nullifying/reducing their damage, though the counter has same elemental properties as the attack it's hit with. The counter's damage is based on how much HP the Mirror lost, multiplied by a set amount depending on the difficulty level. If dealt enough damage or provoked into using its Glass Shard Volley, a Mirror can be broken, causing it to lose its Reflection ability and most of its attacks; keep in mind that a player will suffer Bad Luck if they're the one to break it.

The Wise Mirror is one of two Mirror species (the other being the Angel Mirror) that can reflect all attacks; as such, it should be broken as soon as possible or hit with attacks that the party resists. The simplest option for the former is Berserk, which will force it to break itself as it uses Glass Shard Volley; Syphon won't stop it from reflecting attacks, but it'll still lock it into its basic Bash attack. Its Defence is a bit lower than its Magic Defence, which may dictate the type of attack used against it depending on the player's strategy and the party's condition.

The Wise Mirror is weak to Holy and especially Fire, but its only resistance is an immunity to Earth, so the party will have no shortage of options against it once they figure out how to work around its Reflection gimmick. "More Foe Resistance" makes it immune to Stun, Doom, and Instant Death, also granting it Water and Holy absorptions.

The mirror breaks when hurt for >50% HP in one hit and left with <24% HP, or by any attack that leaves it with <14% HP or kills it. This gives the attacker 2x (3x on Hard/Epic) Bad Luck (ignoring resistances, Bless, and Evade), unless broken by a weather attack or foe's own Glass Shard Volley skill.

Notes: Power is equal to % of Max HP lost by the attack modified by a multiplier based on difficulty (0.2x on Zero, 0.4x on Easy, 0.7x on Normal, 1x on Hard/Endless and 1.5x on Epic); will not trigger against attacks that heal the mirror. Element and type are the same as the attack's, with 100% element degree (even if the attack itself was only partially elemental). Will not trigger if the attack breaks the mirror. Damage is doubled if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

  • If catch score >55, all players are Lovable, and the mirror is broken → Surrender;
  • If Syphoned, catch score >55, and all players are Lovable → Nothing;
  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Wind Blast;
  • If Syphoned or Broken → Bash;
  • If Berserked → Glass Shard Volley;
  • <39% HP → Glass Shard Volley (4/8), Thorns (1/8), Bash (1/8), Wind Blast (1/8);
    • If playing on Hard/Epic → Overgrowth (1/16), Whirlwind (1/16);
    • Otherwise → Whirlwind (1/8);
  • Otherwise → Thorns (1/4), Wind Blast (1/4), Bash (1/4);
    • If playing on Hard/Epic → Overgrowth (1/8), Whirlwind (1/8);
    • Otherwise → Whirlwind (1/4).

Summon[]

The Wise Mirror can be captured and used as a summon; it can also be called between turns by the Alt Leaf Shield and the Alt Chieftain's Horns. It grants five stacks of Bless to the entire party (including allies in backup), although it's a little less efficient than the Wooden Idol summon in this regard (essentially giving one stack of Bless for every 10 SP instead of every 7 SP). Regardless, it's useful against bosses and strong enemies that use lots of status effects.
