The Wolf Dog is a foe in Epic Battle Fantasy 4 and 5, and a summon in the latter. It typically appears around cold areas, such as the Crystal Caverns (EBF4) and the Frozen Valley (EBF5).

Appearance[]

The Wolf Dog is a small canid with a tiny black nose, pointed ears, narrow black eyes with white pupils, and tufts of fur on the sides of its coconut-shaped head. Its body is mostly covered in fluffy fur, save for the lower half of its limbs, which appear slimmer and black in color. It's unclear if this is meant to be skin or a second, sleeker layer of fur.

In EBF4, the Wolf Dog has two large claws on each paw, and its fur is gray with black markings; two zig-zagging stripes on its back and a black tip on the end of its conically fluffy tail. In EBF5, it has three tiny claws on each paw and pale white fur with black spots on its back and hindquarters. Its tail has a small fork at the end, giving it a resemblance to a tree branch completely covered in snow.

Overview[]

Wolf Dogs are low to mid-tier foes with a combination of single-target physical attacks and the ability to buff the Attack of all enemies with their howls. Their signature attack is the Freezing Dive, which encases them in ice as they pounce on a player, dealing pure physical Ice damage with a chance to Freeze the victim. Coupled with their buffing move, they're capable of setting up stronger foes to inflict serious damage; on their own, they're not too dangerous.

Defensively speaking, Wolf Dogs are consistently weak to Bio and especially Fire, but Ice does nothing against them. They don't have a lot of HP and their base Evade is only a little higher than average, so killing them is usually a simple task.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

The Wolf Dog is a physically-offensive support foe that doesn't do much on its own, but poses significantly more threat with allies. Its basic attack is unimpressive, doing modest non-elemental damage with no additional effects, but its Freezing Dive is a little stronger and has a good chance to Freeze its victim for two turns; on higher difficulty levels, it becomes guaranteed to Freeze non-resistant players. It can also howl to buff the Attack of all foes, which is problematic if it's backing powerful physical threats like the Ice Golem or simply accompanied by other Wolf Dogs; if you're unlucky, they can buff each other in quick succession to greatly amplify their damage output (especially against Frozen players).

Although Ice resistance cripples the Wolf Dog's strongest attack, Freeze resistance should be a priority to stop it from immobilizing players and setting up damage combos with its allies. If the party is sufficiently equipped to handle Freezing Dive, Berserk can be used to lock it into that attack; otherwise, Syphon will force it to spam its basic Backflip. Either status stops it from buffing itself and its allies, which significantly limits its support potential; alternatively, it can be easily crippled with various debuffs and status effects.

The Wolf Dog is immune to Ice and resists Dark, but it's weak to Holy, Bio and especially Fire. "More Foe Resistance" makes it neutral to Fire, resistant to Wind and Water, and immune to both Wet and Freeze.

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

The Wolf Dog can buff the Attack of all foes in the current wave, but it mainly uses single-target physical attacks. Two of them are effectless and non-elemental, but its best attack deals pure Ice damage with a decent chance to Freeze the target. On higher difficulty levels, the Freeze chance is doubled, and the attack also gives the Wolf Dog a few stacks of Chill, dampening its Bio weakness while amplifying the healing it receives from Ice attacks; on the other hand, it also encourages the use of Water attacks and the application of Wet to (ironically enough) Freeze it in its tracks.

The Wolf Dog has some AI quirks to work around; it will prioritize the last player who attacked it, avoids attacking players who have been Frozen when possible, and only uses its buff if at least two of its allies (including itself) will get a decent benefit from it. Due to the change in buff/debuff mechanics, this means that multiple Wolf Dogs can't stack their Attack buffs like their EBF4 counterparts; on the other hand, it's easier for them to counteract Attack debuffs. In any case, Syphon will limit it to its basic attacks; Berserk is an alternative if the party is well-prepared for Freezing Dive spam.

The Wolf Dog absorbs Ice and resists Wind, Chill, and Freeze, but Fire and (to a lesser extent) Bio will kill it in even shorter order than other attacks. When "More Foe Resistance" is active, it loses its Fire weakness, resists Earth, and absorbs Holy.

Battle Logic[]

The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.

Epic Battle Fantasy 4[]

  • Syphoned → Backflip;
  • Berserked → Freezing Dive;
  • Otherwise → Backflip (1/3), Freezing Dive (1/3), Buff (1/3).

Epic Battle Fantasy 5[]

Action

  • If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Surrender;
  • If Syphoned → Hit (1/2), Backflip (1/2);
  • If Berserked → Freezing Dive;
  • If two randomly selected foes both have less than a 10% Attack buff → Buff (3/9), Hit (2/9), Backflip (2/9), Freezing Dive (2/9);
  • Otherwise → Hit (1/3), Backflip (1/3), Freezing Dive (1/3).

The Dog will target the last player who attacked them with their attacks. That said, if their selected target happens to be Frozen, they'll switch to a different target (unless no other targets are available).

Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)

  • 25% → Backflip.

Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Beasts, the Wolf Dog will simply Surrender on their turn.

Summon[]

In EBF5, the Wolf Dog can be captured and used as a summon. It uses a powered-up version of Freezing Dive on a single target, dealing modest physical Ice damage with a high chance to Freeze them for two turns.

Trivia[]

  • The Wolf Dog's EBF5 Bestiary/summon icon depicts it with a thick ruff of fur around its neck, seemingly formed from a repositioned sprite of its tail.
