The Zap Dog is a foe and a summon in Epic Battle Fantasy 5. It is normally found in the Iron Fortress.
Appearance[]
The Zap Dog is a small canine with noticeably spiky fur, as if it were standing on end from its residual electricity. Its face has two broad ears, small slit-like eyes, and a tiny black nose. Its head, back, and upper legs are covered in bright yellow fur, while its underbelly and lower legs are black; the fur on the latter appears to be much shorter than on the rest of its body. Its feet end in three-clawed paws, and it has a spiky black mane around its neck. It has a short tail with wildly spiked black fur, surrounded by another plume of yellow fur spikes on its hindquarters.
Overview[]
The Zap Dog is a physical attacker that supplements the basic moves of its family with Thunder-based techniques. Its strongest attack hits all players and has a small chance to Stagger that increases on Hard or Epic difficulty; however, it requires a turn to Charge that allows the party to prepare themselves or just kill the Dog before it can act. Overall, it's a relatively low-priority target that can generally be left alone while you kill the more dangerous foes it is accompanying.
Like all Dogs, the Zap Dog will target the last player who hit it, so be careful not to leave it alive if the last one to hit it is in bad shape. On the other hand, you can use this quirk to focus its attention on a tank with high bulk and/or Thunder resistance while the rest of the party heals or buffs themselves. Stat-wise, its only notable trait is a slightly higher-than-average Evade.
The Zap Dog absorbs Thunder and resists Dark, Chill while being weak to Bio and especially Holy. If "More Foe Resistance" is on, it loses its Holy weakness, absorbs Dark, and gains resistances to Earth and Wind.

Battle Logic[]
The following describes general logic of the enemy and attack patterns, with chances of each attack to be used. Conditions are listed from highest to lowest priority unless specified otherwise.
Action
- If catch score >55 and all players are Lovable → Flee;
- If Syphoned → Hit (1/2), Backflip (1/2);
- If Charged → Thunder Dash;
- If Berserked → Thunder Backflip;
- Otherwise → Hit (1/4), Backflip (1/4), Thunder Backflip (1/4), Charge (1/4).
The Dog will target the last player who attacked them with their attacks.
Counter (only if Counter-Attacking Foes is enabled)
- 25% and not Syphoned → Thunder Backflip.
Additionally, if any front line player has equipment that scares Beasts, the Zap Dog will inflict 1x Berserk on themselves at the start of their turn (this does not take up their turn).
Summon[]
The Zap Dog can be captured and used as a summon. It instantly charges up a Thunder Dash to hit all foes for physical Thunder damage and a small chance to Stagger them.

Trivia[]
- According to Matt Roszark, the name Zap Dog intentionally sounds like the Pokémon Zapdos, which has a similar appearance to this foe[1].
